High School Sports Are Back

While many students across Canada last year had no high school sports at all, Collingwood students were able to participate in a robust Athletics program.  Our coaches worked hard to maximize fun since there were no games.  However, we all know that athletes want to compete and happily this year our teams will once again be taking the field against the best teams from the North Shore and across the province.

At this moment, BC School Sports has put no restrictions on games or travel so North Shore league play will start as early as September 20th in some sports.  The Independent Schools Association (ISA) is also planning to run its full slate of fall tournaments.  This is great news for all our student-athletes.

Parents need to be aware that there may be restrictions when it comes to spectators.  At the current moment, it is up to the individual school to decide whether or not they will welcome fans onto their campus.  Thus, while most outdoor fall sports will have fans, there may be limits at some volleyball games.  If this is the case, our volleyball coaches will be sure to let parents know well in advance.

All sports schedules are now up on the Collingwood website.  Please check there for practice times

National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

In 2015, The Truth and Reconciliation Commission presented their final report. This report included 94 Calls to Action to further reconciliation between Canadians and Indigenous peoples. Call 80 of this report states:

We call upon the federal government, in collaboration with Aboriginal peoples, to establish, as a statutory holiday, a National Day for Truth and Reconciliation to honour Survivors, their families, and communities, and ensure that public commemoration of the history and legacy of residential schools remains a vital component of the reconciliation process.

In response to this, September 30, 2021 will be the first official National Day for Truth and Reconciliation in Canada. This day gives the public a chance to recognize and commemorate the intergenerational harm that residential schools have caused to Indigenous families and communities, and to honour those who have been affected by this injustice.

A reminder that while a specific day has been set aside to focus on Truth and Reconciliation, truth and reconciliation is an ongoing shift in focus and mindset. We are all on a growth journey that will last a lifetime.

Next week students will be taking part in activities throughout the week that allows them to reflect, learn and be part of the change in developing respectful and meaningful relationships with our Indigenous community.

We encourage you to be part of the change as well.

Fast, Furious, Fantastic - The Cavs Are Back

School sports are back and Collingwood's teams were quick to take to the field/court last week.  It is impossible to adequately describe the joy felt by athletes, coaches and fans as the Cavs played games across the North Shore and in Victoria during the past seven days.  It's simply fantastic for our teams and athletes to be back in action.

Mo Kelly is the only returning starter from the senior field hockey 2019-20 BC AA Championship squad.  The field hockey team has already played three top-class AAA teams in North Shore league action.  No wins so far, but these tough games are perfect to get them ready for the BC AA Championships in November.

The senior soccer team played in the ISA Championships last weekend at SMUS in Victoria.  The team lost two games in penalty shoot-outs and unfortunately lost their first league game yesterday also in a shoot-out.  Penalty shot practice is going to be be front and centre this afternoon at training.

The Grade 9 rugby team is off to an amazing start to their season.  They won an exhibition game against St. George's in a resounding fashion and then won the ISA Grade 9 7's tournament yesterday.  This is a powerhouse squad that has it all.  Their speed, toughness, skill and rugby smarts will make them hard to beat this year.

And speaking of Cavs being back, Madison Mailey dropped by the school last Friday with her Olympic Gold Medal! Madison graduated in 2014 and was part of Canada's epic win in Tokyo by the Women's Eight in rowing.  Here is Madison with one of her old Collingwood rowing coaches, Chris Jacoby.

Junior Field Hockey Cavs Looking Good

The junior field hockey team is comprised solely of Grade 8 and 9 students this year.  This makes it tough when they play bigger schools who not only have more students to choose from but also have Grade 10's on their teams.  Although wins may be hard to come by early in the season, the junior coaches feel the future is very bright for this talented group of young players.  Here is a report from Coach Allan:

“The junior girls field hockey team played their second regular season game against Handsworth Secondary on Wednesday. Although the team conceded 5 goals to the older and physically dominating Handsworth team, the Cavs were overjoyed to secure their first goal of the season. After a joint effort from the entire forward line and a short battle in front of the net, Kayla Yu sent the ball across the line.

Goaltender Naeve Lustig stopped 13 shots and played an excellent game, aided by solid play from a backfield anchored by Gigi Dorey and Zara Pejman. This second game was a huge shift from the first as the juniors were able to settle into their roles and positions.

All in all it was an excellent second game and coaches Allan, Kovesi, Pezim, and Power know that this team has huge potential and can’t wait for our next game!”

The Grade 9 volleyball team is off to a perfect start as they have yet to lose a game in their two 3-0 victories this year.  The Cavs started the season with a victory over Mulgrave.  They then followed this up with a road trip to the Sunshine Coast where they defeated Chatelech.  The team is playing terrific volleyball and is incredibly deep.  Coaches Pagtakhan, Haston and Dowling can turn to any number of winning combinations with their talented squad.  Next up for the Cavs is a local derby-doubleheader as they play West Van and Rockridge next Wednesday at home at 4:00 and 5:30.

Camille Berg serves another ace against Chatelech.

Our Collingwood teams are back playing games and every week there are amazing performances by our athletes.  These performances are being recognized by their coaches who are nominating their players for Athlete Of The Week honours.

Mo Kelly - Senior Field Hockey

Mo is the only remaining starter from the 2019 BC Championship team.  As one of co-captains of this year's team, she has taken charge of leading the very young squad and was playing brilliantly before being injured.

Simone Dhingra - Senior Volleyball

Simone is a Grade 12 leader and was amazing in the team's first league game.  She followed this up with even better performances at the Douglas College tournament last weekend.

Sam Ruby - Senior Soccer

Sam has been simply outstanding.  He brilliantly controls play with his superior passing skills and great soccer instincts.  He also scored a key goal against Bodwell in the Cavs 2-0 win.

David Howard - Senior Soccer

David has been leading by example on the pitch.  He has been controlling the middle of the field for the Cavs and has been almost unstoppable when he sets off on one of his runs with the ball.

Gigi Dorey - Junior Field Hockey

Gigi is a real team leader with a terrific attitude.  She held strong in centre of the Cavs defence when they faced a very tough Handsworth squad last week.

Allison Hargreaves - Junior Volleyball

Allison's setting/passing has been superb so far this year.  Her rocket-like serve is almost impossible for the opposition to handle and she's a great floor general.

Artemis Psarianos - Grade 9 Volleyball

Artemis is a positive and encouraging force for her teammates. She set well despite receiving some rough passes, and helped guide her teammates through rotations mid-game in the victory over Mulgrave.

Senior Field Hockey Rocks The Ravens

The senior field hockey team kicked off their season with three straight games against tough AAA teams.  On this past Monday, the Cavs finally faced a AA opponent.  The Rockridge Ravens are also in the North Shore Premier league, but will be attempting to qualify for the AA BC Championships just like Collingwood.  This meant it was a very important game for the Cavs.

Collingwood was first to strike when Sierra Edstrand smashed one in.  Sutton van Dyk then scored on a nice pass from Nadine Brenninkmeyer.  Nadine and Sutton combined again in the second half as Sutton tipped in Nadine's shot off a short-corner.  Katie Connell wrapped things up after scoring off a goalmouth scramble.  Sarah Murray played well in goal and the Cavs posted a solid 4-2 victory.

Collingwood followed this up with their second league outing against Handsworth.  Despite losing 4-1, the coaches were very happy with the team's play.  Allie Lavis scored against the Royals and Lexy Bannister was outstanding in net for the Cavs.

Yacoub Leads Cavs To Victory

Collingwood wins over St. Thomas Aquinas (STA) in senior boys' soccer are about as rare as unicorn sightings on the North Shore.  STA has long been a thorn in the side of the Cavs and many terrific Collingwood teams have fallen to them over the years. On Tuesday afternoon, it appeared that STA was once again on their way to victory as they quickly scored to make it 1-0. However, a fantastic second-half performance by the Cavs forced a penalty shoot-out that Collingwood won 4-3.  Here is a report from Coach Huis in't Veld:

The Collingwood senior boys' soccer team pulled off an impressive win against a talented STA team on Tuesday. The boys went down 1-0 early and STA dominated possession for much of the first half.

Collingwood played an excellent defensive half and were aided by several stellar saves from their man of the match Ryan Yacoub. Collingwood's two centre backs, Presley Bosa and Matthew Hargreaves were rock solid and managed to limit the number of high-quality chances that STA was able to produce.

The second half was a different story as Collingwood came flying out of the gate. Isaac Puar scored on a fantastic through ball by David Howard to level the game and the Cavs managed to find another gear from there, pressing STA back on to their heals for much of the second half.

Ryan Yacoub made an incredible save with time ticking down to get the game to penalties where Isaac Puar, Grant Anderson, Brendan Barone and David Howard all calmly stepped up and deposited the ball into the back of the net. A final PK save by Ryan secured the win for the Cavs.

The senior boys will look to keep the momentum going in their game on Thursday against Windsor.

Cavs Defeat Ravens Again

The senior field hockey team defeated Rockridge yesterday 4-3 in the rain and the cold.  It was a miserable day but the two teams put on a spirited performance with plenty of excitement for all the fans standing bravely under umbrellas.

Rockridge roared to an early lead, but Allie Lavis scored to tie it up.  Siera Edstrand scored to give Collingwood a 2-1 lead, but a defensive breakdown allowed a Rockridge breakaway and the score was quickly 2-2.  Allie was then taken down by the Rockridge keeper on a breakaway and a penalty stroke was awarded.  Nadine Brenninkmeyer cleverly picked the left-hand corner and the Cavs were up 3-2.  Siera scored her second goal of the game to make it 4-2.  The Ravens made it interesting when they scored off a goalmouth scramble with two minutes to go, but Collingwood hung on for the win.

The Cavs will now await the winner of the Rockridge-Windsor game to see who they play in the North Shore AA Championship game on Monday.

This week's Athletes Of The Week feature athletes from cross-country, field hockey, rugby and soccer.

Adam Greyell - Junior Cross-Country

Adam is a dedicated athlete who has been working very hard during the cross-country practice runs.  Although only in Grade 8, he finished 25th in the first race of the season.  This is a great result considering the race featured 66 runners in Grades 8-10.

Luke Cipolla - Grade 9 Rugby

Luke had an outstanding game last week against Shawnigan Lake School.  He was a one-man 'Wrecking-Machine' as he tackled and rucked relentlessly throughout the game.

Skyler Edstrand - Senior Field Hockey

Skyler is a co-captain of the senior field hockey team and has been instrumental in the team's success this year.  She has been outstanding in her sweeper role and is a great role model for the team's many younger players.

Matthew Hargreaves - Senior Soccer

Matt has been described by his coaches as a 'defensive stalwart and an indispensable member' of the team's back four.  He plays hard every game but exhibits nothing but humility.  He also was the first grad to cross the line in this year's Terry Fox Run.

Tavia Short - Junior Field Hockey

Tavia is a fast and feisty midfielder who has been truly impressive in her first few field hockey games this season. She consistently demonstrates hustle and persistence both in games and practices, and is an encouraging force on the field.

Swimmers Face Cold New Reality At ISA Meet

High school sports may be back, but there are still some big differences when it comes to competition during a pandemic.  Our swimmers got a good taste of this on Wednesday when they travelled to Richmond for the ISA Championships.  While the races provided the same excellent level of competition, the athletes faced a cold new reality as no one was allowed on the pool deck until right before their race.   Thus, instead of cheering on their teammates in the warmth of humid pool air, all swimmers were quickly ushered outside.  Not an ideal situation, but the Cavs persevered and posted some great results. A big thank you to Coaches Ashley Carlbeck and Yuri Yoon who organized tents, jackets and a heater for our athletes. Here is a report from Coach Yoon.

The Collingwood Swim Team recently traveled to Richmond and participated in the ISA swim meet. Unfortunately, the season was canceled last year due to the pandemic, so it was great to see our swimmers back in the pool and jump-start a brand new season with one of our best results ever at the ISAs.

Grade 12 senior Josh DeCoteau had several first-place finishes in his individual events and also helped the Medley relay team to a second-place finish. Josh had a solid performance at the ISAs, but the event was highlighted by two record-breaking performances from both Tristian Goveri and CiCi Sun.

Tristian Goveri broke the ISA boys record in the 50m backstroke by 3 seconds with a time of 27.35s, while grade 8 standout CiCi Sun had 3 first-place finishes, including a new record in the Girls 50m backstroke with a time of 32.89s. Congratulations to our record-breakers!

Overall, it was a fantastic day at the pool as Collingwood finished third overall out of ten schools. We are thrilled to have a good mix of grade 8, junior and senior students representing the Collingwood Swim Team, and we now look forward to the Zone Qualifier on October 28.

Great Day For Collingwood Rugby

The Grade 9 rugby team travelled across the bridge to the pristine fields of St. George's yesterday.  Awaiting the Cavs was a Saints team hoping for revenge after Collingwood defeated them in an early season scrimmage and in the ISA 7's tournament.  However, it was Collingwood that once again emerged triumphant with an emphatic 30-0 win.  Meanwhile at Klahanie Park, the Grade 8 team was defeating Handsworth 46-19.

The Grade 9 team kept their perfect record alive with the big win, but the coaches were even more excited by the fashion in which the boys secured the victory.  Despite very wet conditions, the Cavs played fantastic open rugby which highlighted their skill level.  Coaches Larisch, Hall and Murray were thrilled with how the team played 15-man rugby with the ball flowing from sideline to sideline.  Tries were scored by Nico Bosa (3), Brek Ball, Finn Murphy and James Tiwari.

The Grade 8 team also played some fantastic rugby and once again it was the Cavs' skill level that set them apart from a solid but inexperienced Handsworth side.  Coach Rickard was particularly happy that the forwards hard work gave the talented Collingwood backline plenty of ball to work with throughout the game.  The result was numerous spectacular tries.

Cavs Shine With Fans Back In The Stands

This was a momentous week as it was the first time that fans were allowed back inside Collingwood to watch volleyball in almost two years.  With the 2020 season wiped out by the pandemic, the last time fans watched our Cavs play at home was November 2019.  Needless to say, the players were thrilled to have their parents, grandparents and siblings there to cheer them on.

On Wednesday, the Grade 9 team played a doubleheader against West Van and Rockridge.  The Cavs quickly disposed of both their West Van rivals.  On Thursday, the Grade 10 team played Sentinel and defeated the Spartans 3-1.  The senior Cavs then took to the court and lost a heart-breaking five-set match to Windsor.

Senior coach Brad Jolliffe had surgery earlier this week.  However, he was at yesterday's game in a wheelchair.  That's commitment!

Cavs Win Another Shoot-Out

$

You have to give it to our senior soccer team.  They love to give their fans full entertainment value.  For the fifth time this year, the Cavs went to a penalty shoot-out to decide a game.  After a thrilling win over STA on Tuesday in a shoot-out, Collingwood defeated Windsor yesterday in a similar fashion.  Here is Coach Cantarutti's report:

The Cavaliers have done it again, winning away from home against a talented Windsor squad.  After a nail-biting victory early in the week against STA, the senior boys soccer team took to the field in cold and wet conditions once again to play in a hard-fought battle against the Dukes.

Despite inclement weather, both sides shot out of the gates, seizing on opportunities left, right, and centre.  The Cavaliers had several chances early on, but Windsor struck first, leaving our boys in a familiar position following their match against STA; they had to play from behind.  Undeterred, Collingwood pressed on with creative play through the centre of the pitch thanks to midfielders Sam Ruby, Chris Parker, and David Howard.  The Cavaliers stretched Windsor’s defence as the Nic Wrixon and Rowan Short bounded up and down the sidelines with lighting quick speed.

Following an inventive turn of play, Collingwood won a free kick just outside of the 18-yard box.  David Howard stepped up, striking the ball with vigour; it sliced through the air and deflected off of a Windsor player and into the back of the net.  Shortly afterward, the halftime whistle was blown, and the game was tied 1-1.

With wind beneath their sails and a new tactical formation that afforded more offensive pressure, the Cavaliers returned to pitch with confidence in the second half.  Again, both teams, evenly matched, traded command of the ball and the turn of play.  As in the first half, Windsor struck once more, and again, Collingwood had to play from behind:  2-1.  With resilience, the Cavaliers continued to apply pressure, forcing errors, and creating opportunities.

Our man of the match, David Howard, won another free kick from 25 yards out in the middle of the pitch.  He placed the ball, stepped back, took a deep breath, and struck it with force.  The ball flew over Windsor’s wall and dipped down into the path of the Dukes’ goalkeeper.  David hit the ball with such force that it slipped past the goalkeeper’s hands and into the net.  The Cavs headed to a penalty shootout for the second time this week.

Ryan Yacoub, our stalwart goalkeeper, saved Windsor’s fourth and sixth shots, giving us an opportunity to win the match.  The next shooter, Chris Parker, calmly walked up to the penalty spot, ignoring heckles from the crowd that formed on the sideline.  He stepped back, waited for the referee’s whistle, and slotted the ball into the right-hand side of the net, winning us the match.

With momentum on their side, the senior boys will look to continue their streak next Thursday against Rockridge.  Go Cavs!

David Howard scored two goals in regulation and one in the penalty shoot-out to lead the Cavs to victory yesterday.

Sam Ruby had another strong game yesterday in the win over Windsor.

Ryan Yacoub was once again a star as he saved two penalties yesterday in the shoot-out.

It's always tough to be a shooter when penalties are at the sudden-death stage.  Chris Parker stepped to the fore yesterday and scored the winner for Collingwood.

Junior Cavs Tie Argyle In Field Hockey Action

The junior field hockey team continues to mature and despite their youth are playing fantastic hockey against some very tough North Shore teams.  Here is a report from Coach Kovesi on yesterday's game:

The junior girls field hockey team played an excellent game against Argyle on Monday. The girls dominated the game, maintaining possession of the ball and demonstrating great maturity and technique in their ability to move the ball down the field and put pressure on the opposing net. The girls achieved their first shutout, with goaltender Riley Stevenson blocking all shots on net, and the game ended with a score of 0-0. This tie was definitely a game to be proud of – the girls showed a great deal of skill and teamwork, and played their best game yet!

We have another fantastic crew of athletes this week including two record-setting swimmers.

Rachel Taylor - Senior Volleyball

The senior volleyball team is playing great and Rachel has been a huge part of this.  Her coaches say, "Rachel has shown a consistent willingness to take feedback and attempts to implement it into our practices and games. She shows up with a positive attitude - ready to work and encourage her teammates".

Ryan Yacoub - Senior Soccer

Ryan Yacoub had a fantastic week. Collingwood won both its games in a shootout and Ryan has made a name for himself for his ability to make big saves at the most important moments. Ryan played a remarkable game against STA to keep his team in the fight and ultimately led them to a huge victory against their arch rivals.

Nadine Brenninkmeyer - Senior Field Hockey

Nadine has been playing terrific hockey this year.  She is often the key player in offensive forays as she takes the ball in the mid-field and attacks before releasing the ball to open teammates.  Nadine always brings energy and passion to every game and is a fantastic teammate.

Cici Sun - Senior Swim Team

Cici had an amazing ISA swim meet.  She set a new ISA record in the 50m Backstroke and also won the 50m Butterfly and the 100m IM.

Tristan Govier - Senior Swim Team

Tristan also had a fantastic ISA meet.  He smashed the old ISA record in the 50m Backstroke and won the 50m Butterfly.  Tristan then helped our relay teams to a 2nd and 5th place finish.

Emma Wang - Grade 10 Volleyball

Emma is a dedicated player and has been at every single practice this season. She is a co-captain of the team. Although Emma is a setter, she is also one of the top hitters and servers. Emma has enabled the team to win many games through her excellent leadership, strong skills, and hard work on the court.

Zara Pejman - Junior Field Hockey

Zara Pejman has been the anchor of the junior field hockey team impressing everyone with her composure and consistency. A top notch defender, she has honed her skills in the role of sweeper, and was particularly effective in Monday’s draw against Argyle.

Nico Bosa - Grade 9 Rugby

Nico scored three tries last week against St. George's.  Nico's terrific play is one of the reasons that the Grade 9 team is undefeated this year.  He is hard-working, dedicated and relentless, which makes him a perfect teammate.

Saoirse Lawlor - Grade 9 Volleyball

Saoirse has demonstrated a willingness to try all positions and shown big improvements in skill and awareness on the court. Her serve is a powerful weapon for the Grade 9 team and she also proving to be deadly when she is in the frontcourt.

Sam Layden - Grade 8 Rugby

Sam has played a pivotal role in the Grade 8 Rugby Boys’ success so far this season. His natural skill set and physical presence has paired well with his keenness and athleticism. Sam unselfishly helped secure a recent 31-7 win over Sutherland School and equally great in victories over Handsworth and Shawnigan Lake School.

Zoe Couture - Grade 8 Volleyball

Zoe continues to impress on court with her skillful setting and tenacity.   She is wholeheartedly committed to her team and is an inspirational leader on and off court.

After a tough shoot-out loss in the North Shore AA Final on Tuesday, the senior field hockey team bounced back today with a 2-0 win over Little Flower Academy.  The Cavs now move onto the Vancouver Sea To Sky Zone semi-finals tomorrow.

Collingwood quickly demonstrated that they meant business today as they scored at the 1:38 mark.  Olivia Okano scored off a short-corner to give the Cavs the early lead they wanted.  The game then settled into a tough battle as LFA pushed to get the equalizer.  However, Lexy Bannister made two fantastic saves to keep the Cavs in front. A late goal by Katie Connell sealed the deal.

The senior field hockey team defeated York House 1-0 yesterday to move onto the Vancouver Sea To Sky Zone Final today at Rutledge Field.  York House came into the playoffs as the #1 ranked team from the Vancouver Independent league so the Cavs were a slight underdog going into the game.

Allie Lavis scored the game's only goal on a fabulous tip-in off a short-corner.  Lexy Bannister notched her second shut-out in two days.  The Cavs now face arch-rival Crofton House in today's final at 3:00Pm.

Cavs Win Vancouver Sea To Sky Zone Championship

What a difference five days can make.  On Monday, the senior field hockey team lost in heartbreaking fashion to Windsor in the North Shore Championships.  This meant no first-round bye in the Vancouver Sea To Sky Zone Championships.  It also meant that it was a much harder schedule.  However, the young Cavs proved that they can be a provincial championship contender again as they reeled off three straight victories to win the Zone Championship on Friday afternoon.

Like most Collingwood versus Crofton House games, this one was a tight battle between two well-coached teams.  Both teams had good scoring chances, but the only goal of the game came off a penalty stroke.  Siera Edstrand was taken out by the CHS keeper and the umpires awarded the stroke.  Nadine Brenninkmeyer stepped up and cooly deposited the ball into the back of the net.

Collingwood defended very well in the second half and held the potent Falcons' offence at bay and hung on for a 1-0 win.  The Cavs have now earned one of the top seeds for the upcoming provincial championships in Victoria.

The victorious Cavs celebrate with the Vancouver Sea To Sky banner.

The team celebrates with Collingwood's Head of School Ms. Evans.
