These are obviously interesting times.  Sport Writers across the world have literally nothing to write about.  Clearly, this is also true for a certain Collingwood Athletic Director who is used to bragging about the student-athletes he loves to cheer on every week.

However, we're not going to let a lack of games stop this sports blog.  We're going to continue to profile Collingwood's top student-athletes.  We're starting with Grade 12's who by all rights should be starring in Term 3 sports right now.  Please enjoy learning more about these amazing young men and women:

FAVOURITE COLLINGWOOD SPORTS MOMENT(S):

Coach Ramsden crying when we found out we won three provincial banners in Smithers in my Grade 11 year

ATHLETES WHO HAVE INSPIRED YOU OR FAVOURITE ATHLETE:

Every ski season I am inspired by the new and veteran members of the ski team. Even though while you race, ski racing is not a team sport, watching my teammates charge in their runs always inspires me to ski the best that I can. I am incredibly grateful for the amazing athletes and teammates I have had during these past five years on the ski team.

UNIVERSITY YOU ARE GOING TO NEXT YEAR:

Dalhousie University

BILL YAO

SPORTS PLAYED AT COLLINGWOOD:

Rugby (Gr 9-12), Basketball (Gr 8-12), Swimming (Gr 8-9)

FAVOURITE COLLINGWOOD SPORTS MOMENT(S):

1. Being apart of the 2018 Senior Rugby Team. It was a tour year and I really bonded with my friends and teammates in Australia. Finishing the season undefeated and winning the provincial championship was also the perfect end. It was incredible to be apart of such a strong team as a Grade 11 and I was really happy for the Grade 12's.

2. Winning the 2020 Cavs Classic against my old school and our rival Mulgrave. We beat a 4A team to get to the finals in a seemingly impossible game. The final win just topped it off so well. We played Mulgrave at the beginning of the season and lost by a 20-point margin. It felt amazing to get the win over them this time and beat them by 20. A 40-point turn around in only 2 months' time is not easy so I'm incredibly proud of our team and proud to be a part of it.

3. Scoring a career-high against Handsworth in Grade 9. Coming from China I didn't really play any sports until Grade 8. When I came here I was extremely uncoordinated and un-athletic. I worked really hard through the summer leading up to Grade 9 to prepare for the basketball and rugby season, but I dislocated my kneecap in Term 1 which really set me back. During the Handsworth game, it felt really good to see my work pay off and be at 100% again. I scored a career-high 16 points with three 3's in a row in the 4th quarter.

ATHLETES WHO HAVE INSPIRED YOU OR FAVOURITE ATHLETE:

I don't particularly have a favorite athlete, but if I had to pick one, it'd probably be Michael Phelps. It was crazy to see him break record after record on the Olympic stage, and to come out of retirement after some rough years and still compete really shows his mental and physical strength.

Mountain Bikers Conclude Successful Season

$

Although the pandemic has made it difficult to run an athletics program this year, there are certain sports that are easier to run than others in this difficult time.  Mountain biking is definitely one of those sports as it is outside and the athletes are naturally distanced due to the activity.  With this in mind, the mountain bike coaches were keen to get their riders on the trails and there was a record number of riders who were ready to go.  Here is a report from Coach Ramsden:

The mountain bike team lucked out this year with sunny practices for all but one session! The team grew exponentially this year from the usual 12 person team to over 30 athletes! As bike sales in the local area would also indicate, people are excited to get out biking! This season included practices that focused on: technical climbing, fitness and familiarizing ourselves with one of the race courses for next season. Although we were unable to race this season, all athletes are hopeful for competitions next year. This year saw a large Grade 8 contingent with 16 athletes participating in our practices. We also saw the number of girls increase to 10 riders which is very exciting! All athletes saw great improvement in both their fitness and their technical riding skills. All of this points to a bright future for the Collingwood Mountain Bike Team!

The Grade 8 boys teach saw a big increase in numbers this season! This bodes well for the team in the future!

Rugby Program Day A Huge Success

$

0

While the athletics program has thrived this year at Collingwood despite the pandemic, it is clear that our athletes truly miss the thrill and excitement of all-out competition.  With this in mind, Coach Tom Larisch had a brainwave.  He proposed organizing a 'rugby program day' where each grade's players were divided into two even teams and then they would combine with the other grades and play in a match where the cumulative score decided the winner.  Thus, the Grade 8's would be just as important as the Grade 12's in securing your team the victory.

Under normal circumstances, the senior rugby squad would have travelled to Australia on their bi-annual tour.  Obviously, this did not happen due to the pandemic.  However, an Australian theme was decided on and the two squads were given the names of the two most famous Aussie rugby teams – New South Wales Waratahs and the Queensland Reds.  To ensure that the players would compete hard, the winners were to receive Magnum ice cream bars, which are a player favourite when the team is 'Down Under'.

Coach Larisch decided to name this event the Speirs Challenge Cup in honour of longtime rugby coach and school Athletic Director Dave Speirs.  With the Cup and the Magnum bars on the line, the players took the field with the Collingwood Drum Line drumming them on.  This added tremendously to the fun atmosphere.  Thanks to Mr. Smith for bringing his musicians out.

It turned out that the players were ready to compete and the action was fast and furious.  The skill level at all grades was tremendous.  In the end, a last-minute try propelled the Reds to a 19-18 victory.  It was a great day for everyone.  Thanks to Mr. Hall, Mr. Murray, Mr. Takel, Mr. Rickard and of course, Mr. Larisch for his great idea.

This year's rugby grads pose with their coaches. L to R - Aly Mandami, Daniel Beaupre, Arthur Na, Sasha Haddad, Simon Burns.

Rugby Alumni - Joel Abdel-Barr, Lucas Beaupre, Nate Holm, Sebastian Hutton and Lucas Okano dropped by to watch the game and then play some touch rugby themselves.  All five of these young men have two BC AA rugby gold medals at home.

Madison Mailey Off To The Olympics

Collingwood 2014 alum Madison Mailey is off to the Olympics in Japan.  Madison will be rowing in the Women's Eight.  Madison qualified last year as well but went through the heartbreak all our Olympians felt when the 2020 Tokyo games were cancelled due to Covid-19.  However, Madison kept up her training and now will become the third Collingwood Olympian.  Janet McLachlan represented Canada in the Wheelchair Basketball at the 2008 and 2012 Olympics.  Emily Overholt was on Canada's swim team at the 2016 Olympics.

Madison was a star rower at Collingwood and then continued to excel at Northeastern University in Boston.  She rowed for the Huskies for four years while making her way up the Canadian ranks through their age-group programs.  She is now an established member of the national team.  After waiting an extra year to see her Olympic dream come true, Madison will be on the water on July 25 when the Women's Eight heats start.  Good luck to Madison and all the members of Canada's rowing program.

Drew Mozell Off To World Cup Mountain Bike Event

Drew Mozell is currently in Saalfelden Leogang, Austria where he is preparing to compete in the Mercedes-Benz UCI MTB World Cup event there.  Drew will be representing Canada in the Junior (U-19) category and will race in the downhill.  It sounds like it will be quite the ride for Drew as the event website makes it very clear that the course will be challenging for even the best riders.

"The World Champs track "Speedster", which the downhill elite has to conquer this weekend, is not for the faint of heart! The best reach speeds of up to 65 km / h on the rough terrain. It combines steep passages with demanding root carpets, stone fields, hairpin bends and huge jumps. New since the 2020 World Championship is the passage "Vali's Hell", which provides new excitement to the already familiar track with the Gap Jump!"

We wish Drew the best in this amazing event.  He has worked incredibly hard in the weightroom and on local courses to earn this trip to Austria.

Collingwood 2014 grad Madison Mailey won an Olympic gold medal today as part of Canada's eight rowing crew.  Canada's team led from start to finish and held off the current world champions from New Zealand to win the gold.  It was a tremendous performance.  Canada has not won the women's eight since 1992 in Barcelona.

Madison is the first graduate of Collingwood to win an Olympic gold medal.

Bronwyn Bird led Collingwood to three straight provincial gold medals in field hockey.  She is now about to step onto a bigger stage as a member of the Canadian National Junior Team at the Pan American Junior Championships.  Bronwyn and her teammates will be travelling to Santiago, Chile for the tournament that takes place August 21-28.

Bronwyn is a 2020 grad and is currently in second year at Dartmouth.  We wish her and the team the best of luck in this tough tournament.  A top-three finish will earn the team a spot in the upcoming Junior World Cup.
