With Passion and Purpose
Junior Cavs Win ISA Silver
The junior field hockey team travelled to Shawnigan Lake School this past weekend for the ISA Championships. The team played excellent hockey throughout the tournament and were narrowly defeated 2-1 in the final.
The Cavs opened the tournament with a 3-0 win over Brentwood College. Annabel Brenninkmeyer scored the first goal and then Kayla Yu scored two in quick succession to put the game out of reach. Kayla's first goal came off a terrific feed from Hana Horsman.
In Friday's second game, the Cavs tied the York House 'Senior B' team 0-0. This was a great result against some older players. Riley Stevenson made an 'epic' stick save to help out keeper Naeve Lustig who made several outstanding stops herself to post her second shut-out.
In the final, the Cavs faced arch-rival Crofton House. CHS scored early in the game, but the Cavs roared back to tie it up when Hana put in another great cross that Ariana Bosa tipped nicely into the net. CHS would score again to win the game, but it was an excellent performance from the young Cavs.

Cavs Rugby Remains Undefeated
It was another great week for Collingwood rugby as both the Grade 8 and Grade 9 teams posted big victories last Thursday to remain undefeated. The Grade 8's defeated Carson Graham 63-24 and the Grade 9's overcame a sluggish start to notch a 55-15 victory over Brentwood College. The Grade 9 Man Of The Match was Brek Ball who scored four tries and was absolutely brilliant in all phases of the game.

Four Cavs Attend Canada West Rugby Camp
This past weekend, Collingwood had four attendees at Rugby Canada's ID Camp for Western Canada. Presley Bosa, Sam Chalmers and Ryder Kanewske were all on the field working hard to earn a spot at the full Canada camp. Meanwhile, Collingwood coach Aaron Takel was taking a lead role running drills, evaluating players and even refereeing the trial match.
All three boys reported that it was an intense experience full of plenty of contact drills, skill sessions, game situations and finally a challenging trial match. They also all agree it was a great experience. Congratulations to Presley, Sam and Ryder for being chosen to attend the camp.

Runners Brave Rain, Mud and Cold At Zone Championships
The cross-country runners headed off to Jericho Park yesterday for the Vancouver Sea To Sky Zone Championships. Like many days this fall, it was rainy and cold. Despite the adverse conditions, the team did very well. All year long, Coaches Katie Field, Dave Pool and Duncan Fraser have been impressed by their team's great attitude. Yesterday was no exception.
Top finishes for Collingwood were Elise Miller (Grade 8) who placed 36th in Junior Girls (Grade 8-10). As well, Niko Panagiotopoulos (Grade 8) placed 69th in Junior Boys (Grade 8-10) in only his second cross-country race of the year. Both these performances were outstanding considering that Elise and Nico have two more years to compete at the junior level.

Athletes Of The Week
Playoffs have already started or are quickly approaching for all our teams. There have been many clutch performances from our athletes this past week.
Grant Anderson - Senior Soccer
Grant has been outstanding in recent games for the senior soccer team. He has been playing with grit and determination and is making all the right decisions on the field.
Allie Lawlor - Senior Volleyball
Allie is only in Grade 10 but already a key member of the senior volleyball team. She is beginning to understand how devastating she can be at the net. Her superior athleticism will definitely make her a powerful presence in the years to come.
Olivia Okano - Senior Field Hockey
Olivia is another Grade 10 athlete who is playing at the senior level and thriving under the pressure. Olivia has established herself as one of the top defenders on the team and rarely leaves the field. The Cavs' amazing team defence was key to their three-game run to the Vancouver Sea To Sky Zone Championship last week.
Isabel Burns - Grade 10 Volleyball
Isabel has been in outstanding form in recent weeks. She was terrific at the ISA Championships this past weekend and she seems to be getting better with every game. She has established herself as the 'go-to' hitter on the Grade 10 team and also has a fantastic serve.
Elise Miller - Junior Cross-Country
Elise is in Grade 8 but she has been posting terrific times in the Grade 8-10 (Junior) meets. Yesterday at the Vancouver Sea To Sky Zone Championships she finished 36th, which is an excellent finish for a Grade 8 athlete. Coaches Field, Pool and Fraser cannot wait to see her in action in the coming years.
Thea Lutz - Junior Field Hockey
Thea has been solid all season in defence and has demonstrated improvement in her ability to channel, tackle and clear the ball. She showed incredible leadership, team spirit, and dependability on the field, most recently at the ISA Championship where the girls won a silver medal. Thea's spirited pep talks have become a cherished part of every game.
Flora Huang - Grade 9 Volleyball
During the tournament this weekend, Flora stepped into a new role seamlessly and executed a tricky play despite not having had the opportunity to practice it. Throughout some really tricky games against Grade 10 teams, Flora maintained a positive attitude and encouraged her teammates.
Brek Ball - Grade 9 Rugby
Brek has been fantastic all year, but he took it to a new level last week against St. George's. Brek scored four tries in what Coach Larisch called 'one of the most devastating performances he's ever seen by a Grade 9 player'. High praise indeed for a player with a non-stop engine and terrific rugby skills.
Mitchell Stibbard - Grade 8 Rugby
Mitchell was physically unmatched in his multi-try-scoring effort to help the Grade 8 Boys' Rugby team overcome Carson Graham by a score of 63-28. Mitchell's hard running and ball-carrying evasion was one of many strong efforts that put the Collingwood team over the try line a number of times in the match.
Athletes Of The Week
All across the North Shore, Collingwood teams are playing in must-win playoff games this week. It's an exciting time for all our teams. Here's some of the athletes that shone last week.
Darcy Foote – Senior Volleyball
Darcy is quickly becoming one of the most all-around athletes on the senior volleyball team. Her aggression, both at the net and in the back court, is the key to her team's growing success in offense and defense. Darcy Darcy continues to improve each practice and game and is a leader of passion, support, and intensity amongst her teammates.
Evan Maier – Senior Soccer
Evan has been outstanding all year for the senior soccer team. He has been a real workhorse in the midfield. In last week's heartbreaking loss to Mulgrave, Evan scored the Cavs' only goal. In Coach Cantarutti's word's, "His grit and determination afforded him the opportunity to take that shot and he capitalized".
Lexy Bannister – Senior Field Hockey
Lexy stepped up in the team's time of need and took on the goalie position with passion. Every game and practice she improved and has chosen to stay in the pads for the remainder of this season and into next. Lexy really was a force during the Zone Championships and made key saves against both York House and Crofton House to help the team win the Zone Championships!
Abereena Xu – Senior Swimming
Abereena had a very successful performance at Vancouver Sea To Sky Zone Championships. She finished second the girls 100m IM and had several top 4 finishes in all her events. Abereena has qualified for 4 events for the BC Provincial Championships.
Harbour Dollinger – Senior Swimming
Harbour Dollinger has been working very hard at all the practices and helped our mixed freestyle relay team to a third-place finish at the Vancouver Sea To Sky Zone Championships. Harbour will be teaming up with Abereena again in the relays and we wish them all the best at provincials.
Hana Horsman – Junior Field Hockey
Hana was outstanding in her position of centre forward all season long. Always brimming with positive energy and enthusiasm, Hana demonstrated leadership both on and off the field. Hana played with hustle and heart all season, and particularly demonstrated grit when she fractured her wrist in a tough final draw against Sutherland.
Marley Lorence - Grade 9 Volleyball
Marley Lorence has been a key member of the Grade 9 volleyball team throughout the season. She is a great all-round athlete who will play any position she is asked to during a game. Marley's consistent serving was a crucial in keeping team moral high during the tough league game against Sentinel.
Campbell Stewart – Grade 8 Volleyball
Campbell has been an outstanding player this season. Her combined strength and height make her an imposing blocker and dynamic hitter. Campbell is committed and dedicated to the volleyball program. Her work ethic, positive attitude, and skillset has contributed to the Grade 8 team's success in league play this year.
Jake McAdam – Grade 8 Rugby
Jake's refined skill set, ability to read the play, and desire for success have been major contributing factors to the Grade 8 Rugby team's success so far this season. As a regular try scorer and point-leading team member, Jake can get it done as a ball carrier, ball distributor, and conversion kicker. His coaches look forward to seeing this on display again this week in the North Shore Playoffs.
Grade 8 Rugby Cavs In North Shore Final
The Grade 8 rugby team played Argyle in their final game of the regular season last week. Both sides agreed to play all their boys as equally as possible so that everyone could have a good run-out before the playoffs. Argyle rallied to win that game. Yesterday in the rain, the Cavs wanted to clearly send a message that they were the superior team. The result was a terrific 37-5 win.
Coaches Rickard, Takel and Alguire noticed right away yesterday that the team was fully focused and ready for the game. The Cavs were quick to take charge with Jake McAdam and Mitchell Stibbard leading the way. Valentino DeCotiis was also outstanding and contributed two tries. Sam Layden was his usual physical self and Matthew McAdam, Tyler Lang, Braedan Payne and Jonah Rickard were also all commended for their fine play by the coaching staff.
The Cavs will now face Handsworth in the North Shore Final on Thursday at 3:30 at Klahanie.
Will Chalmers in action earlier this year for the Cavs.
Tough Day 1 For Field Hockey Cavs
The senior field hockey team are the three-time defending BC AA Champions. In previous years the first day of the BC's has been a mere warm-up. However, this year's squad is unlike any other in Collingwood history. Nine players are in Grade 9 or 10, which it makes it very young and inexperienced. Although the team is incredibly talented sometimes their inexperience shows through and it did so today. The Cavs managed a solid tie against Shawnigan Lake but then lost a painful 3-2 encounter with Little Flower Academy.
Collingwood opened the day against SLS. Although the team generated many excellent opportunities off short-corners, they could not beat the SLS keeper.
Game 2 against LFA was a real barnburner. After an endless barrage of short-corners to end the first quarter, Bella Connell smashed a ball through a goalmouth scramble to give the Cavs the lead. LFA was quick to answer back to tie the game.
In the third quarter, Katie Connell sent a knuckleball towards the net off a short-corner. The LFA keeper was bamboozled by the bouncing ball and Collingwood was up 2-1. Sadly, this lead was short-lived as well.
The game appeared to be going to a shoot-out to decide pool positions when a turnover gave LFA a chance that they did not miss. It was a tough 3-2 loss, but hopefully some hard lessons were learned. The Cavs now face a must-win game tomorrow morning to earn a berth in the quarter-finals.
Bella Connell scored a great goal against LFA this afternoon.
Sutton van Dyk is one of the three Grade 9 phenoms who are already playing for the senior team.
Last-Second Try Gives Grade 9 Rugby The Perfect Season
The Grade 9 rugby team travelled to St. Michaels University School today for a game against a SMUS team bolstered by a few local club players. On the line was an undefeated season for the Cavs. The team had steamrolled the opposition through most of the season notching big wins along the way. Today's game would be much different as it turned out to be a hard-fought match in inclement weather that tested the skill of both teams.
In the first half, Collingwood dominated territory but rarely got past the SMUS 22m line. The Cavs struggled with SMUS' tough defence. While the Cavs' terrific handling skills were on display the wet weather and the Blue Jags' hard tackling made things difficult for Collingwood. Despite playing well, the team found themselves down 3-0 at half.
The second half started poorly when a pass was intercepted and SMUS went up 8-0. However, the Cavs slowly began to assert themselves. The unsung forwards continued to battle and give the backs lots of ball. Some clever tactical changes by the Collingwood coaches began to pay dividends with the backline. When Finn Murphy smashed his way across the goal-line, it was suddenly 8-5 and the comeback was on.
Multiple times the Cavs got mere metres away from scoring, but the SMUS defence held. With no time left on the clock, Collingwood managed a massive shove in the scrum and won a ball against the head. The ball was moved wide and James Tiwari sliced through the SMUS defence and reached out far enough to dot the ball on the goal-line to make it an epic 10-8 win for Collingwood.
It was an amazing way to cap off an undefeated season. Well done to all the players and coaches.
Just like he has done all season, James Tiwari used his speed and footwork to score the winning try.
Cavs Defeat Hawks At BC Championships
After a tough loss this morning against the Windsor Dukes, the senior field hockey team rebounded nicely this afternoon with a 1-0 win over the JL Crowe Hawks. The Cavs played open flowing hockey and the 1-0 scoreline really does not do the team justice as they totally dominated play throughout the game. Collingwood came close on numerous short-corners but could not score until the 4th quarter when Allie Lavis brilliantly tipped a hard Olivia Okano shot into the top corner. It was a very pretty goal. Lexy Bannister and Mo Kelly shared the shut-out. The Cavs will close out their BC Championships with one last game tomorrow morning.
Ella Thompson has played very well throughout the Collingwood's first four games at the BC Championships.
Remy Caplan is one of the Grade 11 players who will be back next year with valuable experience from the BC Championships.
Brother-Sister Duo To Represent Collingwood at BC Swim Provincials
The swim team recently competed in the Vancouver Sea To Sky Zone Championships. Here is a full report from Coach Yoon:
The Collingwood Swim Team competed out in Richmond again for the annual Vancouver Regional Zone Swim Meet. This was our second meet of the season under strict Covid safety rules. The Zone qualifier is a very competitive event, and we're proud of all our swimmers who competed hard for our school while complying with the strict safety guidelines. We have some great results to report back, and a special thanks to Mrs. Carlbeck for bringing the hot chocolate, ramen noodles, and marshmallows for the team- this made the event more memorable and fun for all!
Grade 12 senior and team captain, Josh DeCoteau, had another fantastic performance in all events. He placed second in the 50m Open Freestyle race and will again compete at provincials. The 50m Freestyle race will have all the best swimmers in the province racing. As a grade 12 senior, Josh is looking forward to the challenge, and he is in an excellent position for a top finish. It was also great to see Josh team up with his little sister Claire. The sibling duo finished second in the 200m Mixed Medley Relay with Tristan Govier and grade 8 standout Cici Sun. We're excited to see Collingwood's first-ever brother-sister duo compete at provincials as a team and go for a medal.
Grade 11 senior Tristan Govier continued to dominate at Zones and qualified for provincials in several events. Earlier in the season, Tristan set a new record at ISAs in the 100m Backstroke, and he looked even better at Zones! Tristan was the only swimmer in the Vancouver region to break 1 minute in the 100m Backstroke, and is now heading to provincials as a medal candidate.
Senior swimmers Henry Brewster, Jeremy Lu, and Harbour Dollinger also qualified for provincials. Our junior swimmers also had some fantastic finishes headlined by Abereena Xu, who qualified for four events. Chloe Yang, Saige Fiorvento, and Reine Huang are also heading to provincials. Overall the boys placed 3rd, and the girls placed 5th. It was one of the best team finishes for Collingwood at Zones. We are thrilled to have a good mix of junior and senior students for our 12 member Provincial Swim Team, and we now look forward to the BC Championships on November 19th and 20th.
Congratulations again to our 2021-2022 Collingwood Provincial Swim Team! Josh DeCoteau, Tristan Govier, Henry Brewster, Jeremy Lu, Harbour Dollinger, Keiran Benson, Claire DeCoteau, Saige Fiorvento, Reine Huang, Cici Sun, Chloe Yang, and Abereena Xu.

Four Goals By Lavis Sends Seniors Out On A High
After two quarters, the senior field hockey team was tied 0-0 with South Kamloops in their final game at the BC Championships. Some stern words from Coach Gold were heard at halftime and a completely different team emerged for the 3rd quarter. Alli Lavis quickly made it 1-0 and then added another after a nice pass from Sutton van Dyk. In the 4th quarter, Alli completed her hat-trick after a pass from Remy Caplan. Skyler Edstrand then joined in on the fun as she poked a ball past the South Kamloops goalie in a mad goalmouth scramble. Alli then scored her 4th of the game before Nadine Brenninkmeyer finished things off for the Cavs.
In the end, the 6-0 win was a great way to say goodbye to the team's four graduating players. Mo Kelly, Skyler Edstrand, Tori Punter and Sarah Murray all played their last game today for the Cavs. They will be sorely missed next year as they were all fine leaders and terrific players.

Elise Miller Has Terrific Run At BC Championships
Elise Miller was Collingwood's sole participant in the BC Cross-Country Championships yesterday at Jericho Park. Here is a report from Coach Katie Field:
Elise Miller attended her first XC Provincials this morning at Jericho. As a Grade 8 student, she was racing against Grade 8, 9 and 10 students in the Junior Girls category.
Elise was understandably nervous before the race as the sole student who qualified from Collingwood, but once the gun went off, she took off and had an amazing (and muddy) race. She ultimately placed 103 out of 240 students, and she was the 19th Grade 8 to cross the finish line. This is an amazing achievement!
Her speed (4.5min/km) was her same speed as it was at Zones the previous week, while the winner from Zones and the consistent winner from the League races was slightly slower, so she edged closer to them. Great work, Elise.

Cavs Club Cougars In Playoff Action
The senior volleyball team travelled to the Sunshine Coast this afternoon to play the Elphinstone Cougars in a sudden-death playoff match-up. The winner would move onto the North Shore AA playoffs and a chance to earn a berth in the Vancouver Sea To Sky Zone Championships. The loser would see their season come to an end. Although the Cavs would come into the game as an underdog since Elphinstone has played in the North Shore Premier League all season, it was Collingwood that came away victorious with a 3-0 sweep of the Cougars.
The Cavs picked the perfect time for their best game of the season. The team played inspired defence as players covered the floor brilliantly and hunted down ball after ball. The team's defensive play at the net was also stellar and Elphinstone's hitters were frustrated over and over again. Offensively, the Cavs' confidence grew as the match progressed and by the third set the team was hitting freely and with some serious power. Finally, the team's serving was outstanding and the Cougar's were often flummoxed by the Cavs' short serves which consistently dropped in for easy points.
The Cavs now play Seycove in a North Shore AA semi-final this Wednesday at 3:30 at Seycove.
Maddie Kottmeier was a scoring machine with her soft serve today.
Nina Kovacevic and Rachel Taylor were blocking machines today at Elphinstone.
Happy Diwali
Now celebrated across the world, Diwali ( also known as The Festival of Lights) is one of the biggest cultural events that originated from India. The word Diwali comes from the Sanskrit word "deepavali", which means "rows of lighted lamps". "Light " symbolizes the triumph of good over evil, prosperity over poverty and knowledge over ignorance. During the pandemic, it is an opportunity for those that observe Diwali to offer gratitude as this light means more now than ever before. It's a time for lighting diyas, laying out colorful rangolis, setting off fireworks, exchanging gifts of sweets and celebrating with dance, music and storytelling.
Collingwood embodies community as one of its three values, and we are incredibly fortunate to live, celebrate and honour our diverse mosaic.
Grow, Move Talk - Raising Awareness around Men's Health
International Men's Day, November 19, 2021
Celebrating positive relationships amongst the genders is an opportunity for our community to work together to destigmatize vulnerable conversations and reignite healthy relationships.
Gender is an intersection of identity that can affect health, safety, education, and relationships. November is Men's Health Month and is sponsored by the Canadian charity, the Movember Foundation. (https://ca.movember.com/)
We want all members of our community to be safe, healthy, and happy. This means speaking to all members and ensuring they have what they need to succeed. Collingwood will be commemorating Movember with an increased awareness around Men's Health, and particularly mental health and well being. While mental health issues can affect anyone, boys and men are far more likely to die by suicide than their female peers. According to Homeward Health, men account for 75% of all suicides in Canada. Many activists are working towards raising awareness about men's mental health, including the "Man Enough" Podcast. (https://manenough.com/)
Movember is a month-long event that is facilitated by student leaders and dedicated staff, including Mr Blake Mahovic and Dr Selena Rathwell, and is geared towards celebrating positive masculinities and male role models. We are encouraging students to take part in a number of ways. We are focussing on the following topics:
- Male role models
- Men's Mental Health
- Healthy Relationships Between the Genders
As always, the best way to support our community is through communication and discussion around the issues which affect us all.
If you would like to discuss this in further detail or have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact Ms Rajoo, Director of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion.
Cavs Upset STA To Earn Berth In Zone Championships
After upsetting Elphinstone on Monday, the senior volleyball team earned themselves a berth in the North Shore AA Final Four. What lay ahead was a match against Seycove, the #1 seed from the North Shore Premier Division. A win would have been monumental, a loss meant a second match on Wednesday night against #3 ranked STA.
With this tough road ahead of them, the Cavs headed for Deep Cove this afternoon for their first match against Seycove. A 21-25 loss in the first game gave the girls confidence that they could compete. In the second game, the Cavs were very much in the mix but fell 18-25. This meant a short rest before facing STA.
In the first game against STA, it appeared that maybe fatigue had set in and the fresh Fighting Saints won easily 10-25. With changes clearly necessary, Coaches Jolliffe and Harder made some key tactical adjustments to the line-up. The result was an incredible 30-28 win for the Cavs. The team saved multiple set points and then won the game on a terrific point that involved amazing team defence and two hard swings by Nina Kovacevic.
With the match now tied 1-1, Collingwood's confidence was sky-high while the STA team seemed to lose their 'mojo' completely. The result was a fantastic 15-7 win for the Cavs.
Collingwood now has qualified as the #3 seed off the North Shore for the Vancouver Sea To Sky Zone Championships. They don't have to play a wildcard game, they are right into the main draw on Tuesday at Notre Dame in Vancouver.
Nina Kovacevic hits the winning point in the second set.
The Cavs celebrate earning a berth into the Zone Championships.
