These are obviously interesting times.  Sport Writers across the world have literally nothing to write about.  Clearly, this is also true for a certain Collingwood Athletic Director who is used to bragging about the student-athletes he loves to cheer on every week.

However, we're not going to let a lack of games stop this sports blog.  We're going to continue to profile Collingwood's top student-athletes.  We're starting with Grade 12's who by all rights should be starring in Term 3 sports right now.  Please enjoy learning more about these amazing young men and women:

YEARBOOK NEEDS YOUR HELP!!  A YEARBOOK SPECIAL REQUEST:
The DEADLINE for photos/captions is MAY 1st, 2020!

Hello and well wishes to the entire Collingwood Community!  The Yearbook Team at Collingwood has been busy working with the new challenges of trying to finish this year's book given our new learning environment and the fact that we are dealing with the cancellation of many Spring academic, arts, athletic and special events that would normally be covered in the yearbook.  In light of the current and extraordinary circumstances during the Covid-19 Pandemic, the Collingwood Yearbook Team would like to highlight this unprecedented time in our school's history by including the positive experiences Collingwood students, faculty, and staff are having even during such challenging times.  We would like to involve as many members of the Collingwood School community as possible!  And so, we are inviting every student, faculty member, and staff member to please send us a PHOTO and include a short CAPTION telling us about a positive experience that they are having as a result of this new pandemic reality

Criteria:

  1. One clear photo (2MB minimum please)
  2. Include the name(s) of those in the photo. Particularly, we'd like to know the student(s)/faculty/staff that this photo is representing.
  3. short caption indicating what positive moment the photo is capturing about your new reality (ex. the fun of learning online, more time with my family, time to be outside, time to reconnect with the present moment, etc.).   Give the caption a short "Headline" if you wish, and feel free to write up to a maximum of 70 words. (Please see the example below.) Finally, a quick check for spelling/grammar would be much appreciated!

Please send your photos and captions to the following EMAIL address: angela.walsh@collingwood.org

Any questions or concerns can be forwarded to Ms. Angela Walsh, Ms. Martha Bilton, or Mr. Cory McLean

The DEADLINE for photos/captions is MAY 1st, 2020!

We thank everyone at Collingwood for considering getting involved with this fun mission and for helping us to commemorate this extraordinary time in our lives.

Example:

FAMILY FUN!!  "The thing I liked the most was every night we would do a family dog walk. Usually after 9pm which is way past my normal bedtime. My brother would ride his electric scooter (it had a light on it). We would go even it was pouring rain. We would come home after, all have hot chocolate and the older kids would stay up and watch the news."

FAVOURITE COLLINGWOOD SPORTS MOMENT(S):

Winning three provincial banners in Whistler in my Grade 9 year

The team bus trips to Provincials every season

Coach Ramsden crying when we found out we won three provincial banners in Smithers in my Grade 11 year

ATHLETES WHO HAVE INSPIRED YOU OR FAVOURITE ATHLETE:

Every ski season I am inspired by the new and veteran members of the ski team. Even though while you race, ski racing is not a team sport, watching my teammates charge in their runs always inspires me to ski the best that I can. I am incredibly grateful for the amazing athletes and teammates I have had during these past five years on the ski team.

UNIVERSITY YOU ARE GOING TO NEXT YEAR:

Dalhousie University

BILL YAO

SPORTS PLAYED AT COLLINGWOOD:

Rugby (Gr 9-12), Basketball (Gr 8-12), Swimming (Gr 8-9)

FAVOURITE COLLINGWOOD SPORTS MOMENT(S):

1. Being apart of the 2018 Senior Rugby Team. It was a tour year and I really bonded with my friends and teammates in Australia. Finishing the season undefeated and winning the provincial championship was also the perfect end. It was incredible to be apart of such a strong team as a Grade 11 and I was really happy for the Grade 12's.

2. Winning the 2020 Cavs Classic against my old school and our rival Mulgrave. We beat a 4A team to get to the finals in a seemingly impossible game. The final win just topped it off so well. We played Mulgrave at the beginning of the season and lost by a 20-point margin. It felt amazing to get the win over them this time and beat them by 20. A 40-point turn around in only 2 months' time is not easy so I'm incredibly proud of our team and proud to be a part of it.

3. Scoring a career-high against Handsworth in Grade 9. Coming from China I didn't really play any sports until Grade 8. When I came here I was extremely uncoordinated and un-athletic. I worked really hard through the summer leading up to Grade 9 to prepare for the basketball and rugby season, but I dislocated my kneecap in Term 1 which really set me back. During the Handsworth game, it felt really good to see my work pay off and be at 100% again. I scored a career-high 16 points with three 3's in a row in the 4th quarter.

ATHLETES WHO HAVE INSPIRED YOU OR FAVOURITE ATHLETE:

I don't particularly have a favorite athlete, but if I had to pick one, it'd probably be Michael Phelps. It was crazy to see him break record after record on the Olympic stage, and to come out of retirement after some rough years and still compete really shows his mental and physical strength.

Enjoy some beauty from our first ever COLLINGWOOD VIRTUAL CHOIR! This Senior Level piece performed by 65 students – what an accomplishment for the Concert Choir made up from students in Grades 8 through 12! The lyrics are even more timely considering recent news about Nova Scotia. Those people are on our minds and in our hearts.

We look forward to the end of this pandemic so keenly and will welcome a 'bonny new land'. Things will be different. Things will also feel oddly the same. We are now definitely more alone than ever right now but also more connected in a 'new world' way. What we shape and make of our 'new land' after this pandemic will change yet again in our future. As the writer says; it will just 'roll to the ocean again'.

All Too Soon

Traditional Celtic Tune
written by Stephen Hatfield

No one's in doubt that the children singing
All too soon shall be women and men
And the bonny new land
That we shaped with our hand
It'll roll to the ocean again.

No one's in doubt that the tale we're bringing
Can't turn time back to where he was then
For the old ways they change
But the new is so strange
Will it ever be simple again?

No one's in doubt that the children singing
All too soon shall be women and men
And the canny old land
That we never could command
It'll roll to the ocean again.

[song change]

Grampa was in the war, and when he came back to Nova Scotia
He had a bride in tow, who had no English but Yes and No Sir
What made her leave her home to be with someone she hardly knew?
(What would make her leave her home?)
How she must have hated to feel alone, she must have cried when the day was through
(I would hate to feel so alone)

Oh and this was a part of earth
Where you could hold onto one another
This was a line of work
A-where the whole town was like your brother

Ah but now it's getting hard to stay
(Now the children)
The children move to a bigger city
(move away)
And there is really nothing you can say
(There is really nothing)
But what a shame, and what a terribly pity
(That you can say, but)

Haven't got a notion, how to stop the motion, rolling to the ocean, that's the magic potion
(Roll on down the bay)
Haven't got a notion, how to stop the motion, rolling to the ocean, that's the magic potion
(Fundy to Biscay)

They say,
The world is getting smaller every day, oh every day
But to make it pay
Well everybody has to move away, so far away

Haven't got a notion, how to stop the motion, rolling to the ocean, that's the magic potion
(Roll on down the bay)
Haven't got a notion, how to stop the motion, rolling to the ocean, that's the magic potion
(Fundy to Biscay)

You know,
How much a Maritimer hates to go, and isn't it so,
Just how much we owe
(We know how much we owe)
To the land that watched our parents grow
(We love the land that watched our parents grow)
When life was oh, so deep and slow
And hard, but deep, and proud
Was the life we were once allowed,
We knew our soul never could be bowed,
(Never to be bowed)

Dealing with the ocean, when you're Nova Scotian, turns into a sign of family devotion
(You deal with what you know)
Dealing with the ocean, when you're Nova Scotian, turns into a sign of family devotion

Grampa was in the war, and when he came back to Nova Scotia
He had a bride in tow, who had no English but Yes and No Sir
What made her leave her home to be with someone she hardly knew?
(Don't cast me off discourteously)
How she must have hated to feel alone, she must have cried when the day was through
(For I have loved you so long)

[song change]

No one's in doubt that the children singing
All too soon shall be women and men
And the canny old land
That we never could command
It'll roll to the ocean again.

1. Winning the provincials with the team both of my seasons. It was amazing to see all of our hard work pay off. Even though I wasn't on the team for the three-peat, I loved being with the team for two championships. So proud of the team!

2. I really love watching the basketball teams play during their season. When the whole school is down there watching a final game and cheering for our players you can really feel the energy of the crowd. Watching basketball at school is always a good time.

3. In Grade 9, I went to California with the junior team to play in the Cal Cup. We didn't exactly win, but the whole experience was so much fun! I loved getting to know the team and learning to play more together.

Russell Wilson has always been someone I've looked up to. Despite being arguably one of the top 3 best Quarterbacks in the NFL, he still makes the time to go to Seattle Children's Hospital every Tuesday. The way he is able to stay so humble and grounded whilst being one of the best football players out there is something I really admire. Also, Lionel Messi does some mind-blowing things with a soccer ball. His skill and mastery of his craft is something I've never seen before.

SPORTS PLAYED AT COLLINGWOOD:

Field Hockey and Basketball (Grade 10)

FAVOURITE COLLINGWOOD SPORTS MOMENT(S):

Winning the provincials in 2018 and 2019. It was amazing to see all our hard work pay off, especially in 2018 when we beat Crofton (our rivals) 5-0 on their own turf.

Winning the ISA’s in 2018 and 2019. It was so cool how the team really came together to beat Crofton (2018) and Shawnigan (2019). Our strength came from our togetherness.

Coming second at the Bridgman Cup in 2018. Even though we didn’t come first, it was an incredible feeling to have made it to the finals where we played Handsworth.

(Editor’s Note: The Bridgman Cup brings together the best AA and AAA teams in the province. For a AA team to make the final is a huge deal!)

LOCHLAN COLLINS

SPORTS PLAYED AT COLLINGWOOD:

 Basketball, Cross-Country, Rugby (Grade 8 and 9)

FAVOURITE COLLINGWOOD SPORTS MOMENT(S):

Winning the 2020 Cav Classic against Mulgrave.  We had a serious rivalry with Mulgrave and they had beat us by 20 points in the league game.  We were only up by 5 points at half, but we ended up winning by 20 points and everyone got into the game.  It was great celebrating with my teammates.                                                                                                        (Editor’s Note – Lochlan’s had 36 points in the final and was the Tournament MVP.)

Making the BC Championships when I was in Grade 10. It was my first full year on the senior team. We had worked super hard all season and we were viewed as the underdogs going into the season. As a team we proved almost every team wrong. As a Grade 10 starter I was able to help lead the team to getting to provincials which was a huge achievement.

Senior’s Night – It was a great end to this season and super-emotional for me because the coaches have put so much into the program and I got to thank them for everything.

STEPHANIE GILLIES

SPORTS PLAYED AT COLLINGWOOD:

Field Hockey, Track and Field, Tennis

FAVOURITE COLLINGWOOD SPORTS MOMENT(S):

Winning field hockey provincials three years in a row. The best part is seeing our improvement as a team throughout the season and working so hard together to achieve what we did.

Travelling with the school to the Cal Cup field hockey tournament.

Being part of the incredible community that has been formed through the Collingwood athletics program. I have had so much fun bonding with my own teammates and coaches, supporting other Collingwood sports teams, and having others (parents, teachers and friends) come to support us at games. We are so lucky to have such a special spirit at our school, and it will always be one of my favourite things about Collingwood.

FAVOURITE COLLINGWOOD SPORTS MOMENT(S):

Winning 3 penalty shootouts during the season and then back-to-back penalty shootout wins in playoffs last year. The confidence we had as a team going into them was unlike anything I've ever seen before.

(Editor's Note - In Grade 11 and 12, Tucker never missed a penalty shot so he was crucial to all these wins.)

Coming back to win in penalties against Mulgrave this year. All our fans came to support, and we didn't let them down.

Just being able to play with some of my closest friends.

Cavs Win Silver and Bronze At ISA Championships

Collingwood hosted the ISA Grade 8 Basketball Championships this past weekend.  The event featured an 8-team girls' draw and a 10-team boys' tournament.  The boys came away with the silver medal, while the girls brought home the bronze.

The girls opened the tournament with a solid victory over a feisty Southridge team.  This set up a semi-final against a powerful SMUS squad.  The Cavs played a tremendous first half and were tied with the Blue Jags at halftime.  Unfortunately, some key missed opportunities allowed SMUS to pull ahead in the 4th quarter for the win.  Collingwood bounced back in spectacular fashion with a resounding victory over WPGA to win the bronze.

The boys' team first game was against Meadowridge.  The Cavs sped to an early lead and did not look back.  In the semi-final, Collingwood faced Southridge.  The Storm had won two out of the last three boys' championships so it seemed this might be a tough test for the Cavs.  While the game was relatively close in the first half, a 10-0 run to open the second half put the game away for Collingwood.

In the final, the Cavs faced a Saints B squad that had been bolstered by a couple of their 'A' players. The game was a true 'barnburner' as it went into double overtime.  Collingwood had the last shot and therefore a chance to win the game in both regulation and at the end of the first overtime period.  However, the shots did not fall and Saints pulled away in the second overtime for the win.
