We are happy to announce that the Alpine Team WON the Combined Girls and Boys Ski Banner this year!

Jamie Border – got the bronze medal in the Terrain GS. She was impressively tenacious and broke the Border curse of coming 4th!

Olivier Bruson – places 10th in the snowboard Terrain GS (a personal best!)

Team

Girls Skiing placed second behind a VERY competitive Invermere team who was stacked with 4 of the top ski racers this province has seen in a while.

Alpine Team Qualifies All Four Teams For BC Championships

The Alpine team was in action on Thursday at the North Shore Championships at Whistler.  There were some very tough conditions but the Alpine Cavs rose to the occasion and all four teams qualified for the BC Championships.  This is a tremendous accomplishment.  Here is Coach Ramsden's report:

Collingwood athletes competed with heart and determination during the North Shore Championships this week. The team of 51 athletes competed in either the Novice and Experienced division, competing against all other schools on the North Shore.

Novice

Many middle school athletes competed in the Novice division gaining important experience both mentally and tactically. For the second year in a row, Madeleine Kottmeier took the top spot competing against girls in Grade 8 - 12. Collingwood also had two more top 10 finishes with Lilly Lutz placing 6th and Rachel Radosevic placing 7th.

On the men's side, Oliver Bosa had the top Collingwood result placing 9th. Collingwood had a string of finishes from 18th - 26th including Zach Bosa, Aidan Mavai, Kevin Yamada, and Durban Ball.

Experienced

Most senior athletes competed in the experienced division with a couple middle school students rounding out the team. Athletes conquered difficult course conditions with snow falling hard all day long and fog rolling in and out, impacting their visibility. Also, the recent frozen rainfall layer created difficult ruts that claimed many.

Both of Collingwood's snowboard teams put together solid runs that earned them second place in the team division. Isla Cormack just missed the podium with a 4th place finish and Devina Briggs Hammoud was close behind in 6th. Remy Li, in her first year with the team, put together two impressive runs that earned her 7th with Carolyn Yu placing 10th. Olivier Bruson claimed the bronze medal on the boys side with Jason Yu placing 10th, James Lusting 12th and Kevin Meng 19th.

The girls ski team saw some tough competition this year with a very close margin of 2 points separating the top three teams. Collingwood earned third in the team division with Jamie Border leading the charge with a 5th place finish after some excitement with catching up to the athlete in front of her and forcing her to do a re-run. Saylor Sprenger placed 8th, Olivia Tiller and Liz Mathisen placed 12th and 13th separated by only 3 tenths of a second. Ruby Mantel, Cassidy Foley and Simone Dhingra tackled the experienced course for the first time placing 23rd, 24th and 25th.

Sam Fuller continued his dominance on the North Shore with yet another win by over three seconds! Stuart Cooper also had to do a re-run and in his first year of racing in the experienced division, placed an impressive 4th place. Nicholas Dahl continued his consistent skiing with a 7th place finish while Matthew Bugeja and Kevin Huang had fast first runs but some issues with their second runs. Matthew Bugeja skied a third of the course on one ski while Kevin Huang double ejected on the infamous 4th red gate that took many casualties. Archie Robertshaw and Aidan Guo put in respectable finishes in their first year with the team.

With these impressive results, all four Collingwood teams have qualified for provincials and the team looks forward to representing their school in Panorama in March.

Congratulations on a great season!

Sam Fuller won the gold medal with a three-second win over his closest competitor.

Olivier Bruson finished 3rd in the senior snowboard competition.

Jamie Border was so quick on one run, she caught up to the previous skier.  Jamie finished 5th in senior girls competition.

Alpine Team Wins BC Combined Skiing Championship

The alpine team's proud tradition of returning with BC Championship banners continued last week when the boys' and girls' ski squads teamed up to win the Combined Banner.  Here is the full report from Coach Ramsden:

The Alpine team sent all 4 teams to the Provincials this year for the first time in school history. The teams traveled all the way to the BC - Alberta Border to compete against the best in the Province at Panorama Mountain Resort. The competition started with a bang when Sam Fuller won the first run by 3.5 seconds! He continued his dominance to add another second to his lead in second run. His expertise was very valuable as he shared course reports and tips with fellow athletes. Stuart Cooper, Kevin Huang and Nicholas Daal put down some solid, confident runs to keep the Boys team in the mix after the first day of racing.

The girls had some stiff competition from the Invermere home team as well as our rivals York House. Jamie Border cracked the top 5 after two fast runs while Saylor Sprenger, Liz Mathisen and Olivia Tiller continued to close the gap on the York House and Invermere teams in their second runs.

The next day it was our snowboarders turn to take to the slopes and they delivered some personal best results. Isla Cormack led the team with the best girls result in 30th. Carolyn Yu, Remy Li and Devina Briggs Hammoud gained valuable experience competing in Provincials for the first time. With such a young team we know that our girls' snowboard team has a bright future.

Our boys had experience from competing last year and were keen to best their results from last year. Veteran, Olivier Bruson placed 23rd with James Lustig close behind in 31st and Jason Yu in 35th.

The final day of competition had ski and snowboard athletes compete in a one run Terrain GS. After strong results from all participating teams last year, all of the athletes were looking forward to the competition. Once again, Sam Fuller placed first with Jamie Border earning a podium spot on the girls side with a third place. Saylor Sprenger placed 6th, Olivia Tiller 12th and Liz Mathisen came 18th. Cassidy Foley and Ruby Mantel skied strong and confident runs in their first time competing in the Terrain GS. To place 4 girls in the top was very impressive and earned the Girls second place in the Team Division.

The boys also stepped up to the challenge of the Terrain GS and put forth some lightning quick runs. Stuart Cooper placed 15th followed closely behind by Nicholas Daal in 23rd, Kevin Huang in 25th and Archie Robertshaw in 31st. Toby Li battled difficult course conditions to move up through the field to 66th. With these results, the boys earned third place in the Boys team division. Since our girls and boys ski teams were so strong, their combined total points catapulted them to the top of the combined standings and earned them the Boys and Girls Skiing Provincial Banner!

Boys Snowboarding saw Olivier Bruson crack the top 10, with a 10th place finish, which has been a goal of his for the past few seasons. Kevin Meng and James Lustig put together clean runs which was an impressive feat after over 200 racers had gone down the course. On the girls side, Isla, Devina, Carolyn and Remy raced with passion and grit to place within the top 40.

Congratulations to all of the athletes for their strong performances! The coaching staff couldn’t be prouder!

The entire alpine team together at the BC Championships.

Grade 8 Cavs Off To North Shore Final

The Grade 8 girls' basketball team rallied from a 7-point deficit with under two minutes to play to win a thrilling 39-37 semi-final game over Argyle yesterday.  The victory puts the Cavs into the North Shore Final where they will face Mulgrave.  This game is on Tuesday at 3:45 at Mulgrave.

In yesterday's game, the Cavs built a 9-point halftime lead but scored only 3 points in the entire third quarter.  With momentum on the Pipers side, it appeared that it was going to be Argyle's day as they started to pull away in the fourth quarter.  However, the Cavs rallied and tied the game with just over 35 seconds remaining.

This set off a crazy sequence of events that can only be characterized as classic Grade 8 basketball.  Argyle crossed half with a chance to win the game, but turned it over.  Rather than holding the ball for the last shot, the Cavs threw an ill-advised full-court pass that the Pipers knocked out of bounds.

The Cavs now had 21 seconds on the clock and the ball under the Argyle basket.  However, when Argyle intercepted the inbounds pass, they raced up the court with their second chance to win the game.  This all became undone when Reese Tam picked off a pass and stormed back down the court.  Reese's lay-up with 2.5 seconds left gave the Cavs the victory.

It was an incredible finish to a terrific game.

Reese Tam's breakaway lay-up against Carson on Tuesday was nice, but it pales in significance to her heroics yesterday in the North Shore semi-final.

Boys' Basketball Celebrates Senior's Night With Big Win

The senior boys' basketball team said goodbye to seven grads last night and they sent them out with an outstanding 72-53 win over Windsor.  The Cavs finished league play with a 6-1 record.  This means that Collingwood will host Elphinstone on Tuesday at 5:30 in their North Shore quarter-final game.

After the game, Coach Wong made fantastic speeches about all his graduating players.  Each player was given a beautiful action photo of themselves that Coach Ross had put into frames.  This was a very fitting tribute to a group of boys that have given an enormous amount to Collingwood basketball over the years.

Grade 8 Cavs Win Playoff Opener

The Grade 8 girls' basketball team has had a very successful season so far.  They won the Archbishop Carney tournament in mid-January, finished 2nd in the Cap University tournament in December and posted an impressive 5-1 record in North Shore league play.  Yesterday afternoon, they romped through their North Shore quarterfinal with an easy 57-18 win over Carson Graham.

The Cavs will now face a tough Argyle team in their North Shore semi-final tomorrow.  The Pipers beat Collingwood in the Cap U tournament but the Cavs returned the favour in league play.  Thus, it promises to be a terrific battle.

This year's team has tremendous depth, which has allowed Coach Lee to use multiple line-ups that have all been highly effective.  This should be an enormous help in the upcoming games where bench strength can be so important.

Reese Tam drives on a breakaway lay-up in yesterday's win over Carson.

Ally Lawlor has been a force underneath the basket for Coach Lee.

Lucy Xu has the size to be a dominant post player but is so skillful that she has also played point guard at times for the Cavs this year.

Allison Hargreaves drives for a basket in Collingwood's 57-18 win.

Sophie Bell takes it to the hoop in the first half yesterday.

Severin Jackson shoots in the win over the Eagles in the North Shore quarterfinal.

A Seniors' Night For The Ages

Across North America, high schools are in the midst of celebrating their graduating basketball players with Seniors' Nights.  Although these nights are always special, they are a little more special if the home team sends its seniors off with a win.

For most of last night, it appeared that this would not be the case for Collingwood's senior girls.  The Cavs were facing a tough Notre Dame team that entered the 4th quarter with a 47-31 lead.  However, in true storybook fashion, the Cavs roared back and won the game on a last-second lay-up by Sara Fraser.  This meant that Dorreh Assadi, Keira McCord and Ivy Zhu won the final home game of their high school careers.

All three seniors played a key role in the big win.  Although Dorreh and Keira got themselves into foul trouble which limited their first-half minutes, they both contributed to the 4th quarter comeback with 6 and 4 points respectively in the final stanza.  Due to the foul trouble that multiple Collingwood players found themselves in, Ivy was brought off the bench and contributed massively through terrific help defence all game long.

However, the comeback was truly fashioned by amazing team defence and Rachael Chete's incredible hot hand in the 4th quarter.  On three successive trips down the floor, Rachael hit two 3-pointers and then a difficult 2-pointer with a Notre Dame player right in her face.  Meanwhile at the defensive end, Sara, Stella Guernsey and May Chen were gobbling up defensive rebounds.

In the end, the big win game down to a defensive breakdown by Notre Dame and Sara's great speed.  The Jugglers scored to the tie the game with five seconds remaining.  Perhaps sensing that a time-out was coming, they relaxed while Collingwood quickly inbounded.  A quick outlet pass sprang Sara on a breakaway with just over three seconds on the clock.  She raced down the court and put the ball in the basket with .3 seconds remaining for an epic Seniors' Night victory.

As usual, after the game the returning players made fantastic speeches about their departing teammates and each senior received an action photo of themselves from Coach McLaughlin.  Special thanks must go to the amazing Coach M who makes these nights so incredible for her players every year.

Collingwood's three seniors with their grad photos - L to R - Ivy, Dorreh, Keira.

Rachael scored 12 points in the 4th quarter to spark an incredible comeback.  She finished with a game-high 22 points.

Sara's breakaway lay-up with mere seconds on the clock gave the Cavs a two-point victory to remember.

Cavs Finish 2nd At St. John's Tournament

The Grade 8 boys' basketball team powered their way through their first three games of the St. John's tournament before running into an excellent Lord Byng squad in the final.  The Cavs had a 10-point lead partway through the third quarter, but they lacked 'the killer instinct' and allowed Byng back into the game before succumbing to the Grey Ghosts 55-45.  Here is Coach Yoon's report:

The Grade 8 boys' basketball team recently traveled to St. John's School to take part in their bantam boys' tournament. Our team was able to pull out three convincing victories before facing Lord Byng in the finals. Despite losing 55-45, it was a very competitive and close contest right down to the final minutes.

Joaquin Lupton was named Game MVP, and congratulations to Alex Yu for being named Tournament MVP. Overall, Mr. Vidic and I are happy with how the boys competed. It was a great learning experience for the boys, and tough games like this will help us get ready for our main goal, which is to win the North Shore playoffs.

Before the St. John's tournament, the team finished league play with a 7-1 record and secured first place for the North Shore playoffs. It's an exciting time for the Grade 8 team. An automatic berth to provincials is on the line, and Collingwood will now host the key playoff games. The team will have two more practices before the playoffs officially start later this week. We look forward to playing our best basketball of the season, and we encourage all students to come out and support the team.

Cavs Wrestle At Western Canadians

Since the Christmas Break ended, the wrestling team has had an action-packed return to competition.  This past Friday, Coaches Larisch and De Cotiis took four wrestlers to Western Canadian meet in Abbotsford.

Inno De Cotiis led the way with the silver medal in the 52kg category.  The most impressive part of this silver medal is that Inno normally wrestles in the 48kg category, which means he was wrestling opponents often ten pounds heavier than himself.

Eli Hart had a very good Friday as he won two out of three of his matches.  Unfortunately, an administrative error led to him being eliminated from Saturday action.

Quinn Reynolds had a strong meet as he finished 2-2, while Dillon McLean scored two victories and one loss on Friday but was unavailable on Saturday.

Prior to the Western Canadians, the team competed in the North Shore Championships.  This was a very successful day as both Dillon and Inno were crowned North Shore champs in their respective weight-classes.

SPORTS PLAYED AT COLLINGWOOD:

Field Hockey, Soccer

FAVOURITE COLLINGWOOD SPORTS MOMENT(S):

Winning field hockey provincials both this year and last. Although last year was my rookie season and my first year at the school, this year was extra special since I developed an even stronger bond with the coaches as one of the captains of the team, and it was my last time playing with these girls.

The last game of the soccer season last year. Although we lost in provincials, I had been joking with Mr. Yeates that the game I finally did a move would be the highlight of my career. I did probably the easiest move in the last game and heard my teammates and coaches yelling at me, so I also screamed on the field in the middle of the game.

Watching the senior boys basketball team at 'Whiteout'. The whole school got so into the game! I have always wanted to go to a school with lots of school spirit so I was beyond happy.

ATHLETES WHO HAVE INSPIRED YOU OR FAVOURITE ATHLETE:

Ella Masar (Ex-US national team soccer player). At one of the toughest points in my athletic career she coached me and I got to know her and her story very well. She still inspires me with how much she had to overcome to achieve her dream, even though I am now pursuing a different sport.
