With the pandemic situation preventing us from meeting in person, the Senior Athletic Banquet will be a virtual event this year.  While this is a big change from the usual fun night at Hollyburn, our coaches and athletes are still coming together to celebrate their team and worthy award winners.  And best of all, there's still a banquet.  All our senior athletes will be picking up a terrific take-home meal from Earls tomorrow and then enjoying it at home while seeing their teammates on screen.

Collingwood held its annual Athletic Banquet last night.  Despite being an online event, it was a terrific celebration of Term 1 and 2 sports.  The athletes were treated to an outstanding dinner from Earls and then they came together with their coaches to reminisce about their season and recognize award winners.  There were many laughs throughout the night and coaches and players really appreciated the chance to be together again, albeit online.

Two major athletic awards were handed out yesterday - The Jim Burnett Award and The Sekhon Scholar-Athlete Award.

The Jim Burnett Award is awarded to a multi-sport athlete, who is an unsung hero, hard working and team focused.  This year's award winner was Thomas Foote.

The Sekhon Scholar-Athlete Award is for the Senior School student-athlete who best demonstrates character, teamwork, commitment, and intensity in athletic performance while maintaining the highest of academic standards.  This year's award winner was Lochlan Collins.

Four Cavs Make Rugby's Fab 50

$

Collingwood went into this year's rugby season with a real opportunity to earn a BC AA three-peat.  The team had fifteen returning Grade 12 players who were hungry to earn the Cavs' tenth provincial title.  One of the reasons that the team had a legitimate shot at this was its enormous strength down the middle at hooker, #8, flyhalf and fullback.  Successful rugby teams are often built around these key positions.

Of course, the season did not happen.  However, the BC Secondary Schools Rugby Union and Howard Tsumura have published a list of the top Grade 12 high school rugby players in the province this year, which they call the Fab 50.  Collingwood placed four players in this incredibly talented group.  Joey Ficocelli (Hooker/Flanker), Thomas Foote (#8/Flanker), Nate Holm (Flyhalf/Centre) and Blaise Benoit (Fullback/Flyhalf) all were selected.

This is a great honour for these four young men.  They are all fantastic rugby players but more importantly they have been great leaders while at the school.  Congratulations to Joey, Thomas, Nate and Blaise.

Here is the link to Howard Tsumura's fantastic blog Varsity Letters, which covers High School and University sports.

Also, a big thank you to Adam Roberts who spearheaded this initiative.  Adam is the longtime Earl Marriott coach and is always looking for great ways to celebrate the young men playing high school rugby in this province.

These are obviously interesting times.  Sport Writers across the world have literally nothing to write about.  Clearly, this is also true for a certain Collingwood Athletic Director who is used to bragging about the student-athletes he loves to cheer on every week.

JAMIE BORTHWICK

SPORTS PLAYED AT COLLINGWOOD:

Field Hockey, Soccer

FAVOURITE COLLINGWOOD SPORTS MOMENT(S):

Winning field hockey provincials both this year and last. Although last year was my rookie season and my first year at the school, this year was extra special since I developed an even stronger bond with the coaches as one of the captains of the team, and it was my last time playing with these girls.

The last game of the soccer season last year. Although we lost in provincials, I had been joking with Mr. Yeates that the game I finally did a move would be the highlight of my career. I did probably the easiest move in the last game and heard my teammates and coaches yelling at me, so I also screamed on the field in the middle of the game.

Watching the senior boys basketball team at 'Whiteout'. The whole school got so into the game! I have always wanted to go to a school with lots of school spirit so I was beyond happy.

ATHLETES WHO HAVE INSPIRED YOU OR FAVOURITE ATHLETE:

Ella Masar (Ex-US national team soccer player). At one of the toughest points in my athletic career she coached me and I got to know her and her story very well. She still inspires me with how much she had to overcome to achieve her dream, even though I am now pursuing a different sport.

UNIVERSITY YOU ARE GOING TO NEXT YEAR:

University of Vermont (Where Jamie will be paying Varsity Field Hockey)

FAVOURITE SPORTS TEAM:

The Vancouver Canucks or the Men's National Field Hockey Team.

BLAISE BENOIT

SPORTS PLAYED AT COLLINGWOOD

Soccer, Rugby

FAVOURITE COLLINGWOOD SPORTS MOMENT(S):

1. Going undefeated in the 2018/19 rugby season

2. Beating Windsor in penalties in the 2018/19 senior soccer season

3. Playing Barker College on the 2018/19 Australia rugby tour

 ATHLETES WHO HAVE INSPIRED YOU OR FAVOURITE ATHLETE:

Laurent Duvernay-Tardif (a very inspirational athlete)

UNIVERSITY YOU ARE GOING TO NEXT YEAR:

As of right now, I'll be heading to either the University of Toronto or McGill University.

FAVOURITE SPORTS TEAM:

I cannot say I passionately support a particular sports team, however whenever I watch France play rugby I'm rooting for them.
