Grade 8 Cavs Make History

The North Shore is such a hotbed of high school basketball that it always difficult for small schools like Collingwood to compete at the Grade 8-10 level when competition is not tiered.  The North Shore premier leagues are loaded with AAA and AAAA schools that have far larger student populations from which to draw their athletes.  Thus, when Collingwood teams advance to a North Shore Final, it is a really big deal.  This week, Collingwood had both their Grade 8 Boys' and Girls' teams in the North Shore Championship game.  This is the first time in school history both teams have reached the championship game in the same year.

The girls' team took to the court on Tuesday to play arch-rival Mulgrave in their final.  For two 'smallish' schools to be in the final is a real testament to the coaching the girls have received at both schools.  In the Cavs' case, this great coaching started at our Wentworth campus.  Grade 8 coaches Diana Lee and Heather Dow inherited a skilled and motivated group of young women and have continued to build their skills.  The result has been obvious to all who have watched the Cavs this year.  They are a terrific team.

Sadly, Mulgrave were just a little bit better on Tuesday.  The Cavs staged a late game comeback but fell narrowly to the Titans 35-31.  It was a fantastic game and Coach Lee was very proud of her squad.

The boys' team has also had a great year.  It is probably the deepest Grade 8 team in Collingwood history.  This enormous depth has been crucial to the team's success.  It is also why Coaches Vidic and Yoon were optimistic that when the team took the court yesterday that they could win Collingwood's second Grade 8 North Shore basketball title ever.  The first was won a mere 19 years ago.

In the Cavs' way stood AAAA West Van.  The two teams had split the season series with both games coming down to the last seconds of play.  As is often the case in championship tilts, the game came down to defence.  Collingwood was unable to stop the Highlanders at crucial moments.  Every time the Cavs built up some momentum through their excellent outside shooting, they were let down by defensive miscues.  As a result, West Van thwarted Collingwood's championship hopes just like they did the last time the Cavs made the final.

Although neither team ended up with a North Shore Championship to their name, it has been an amazing season for both teams.  The good news is that the ISA Championships are next weekend so both teams are still playing and will be looking to medal next Saturday afternoon on our home court.

Athens Finishes 4th At BC Championships

When Athens Wu showed up to her first high school wrestling practice this year, Coach Larisch knew he a rare talent on his hands.  It was immediately apparent that she was tough, athletic and had a personality well-suited to the hard work and sweat that goes into wrestling.  As the year progressed, it became clear that Athens was a natural.  Thus, it is no surprise that in her first ever BC Championships that she reached the semi-finals.

Although Athens was to lose her semi-final and bronze medal matches, there is no doubt that this has been an amazing year for her.  The bronze medal match was incredibly tough and she was unlucky not to win it.  With two more years of wrestling ahead of her, Athens has a chance to definitely climb to the top of the podium before she leaves Collingwood.

Inno DeCotiis also had an incredible year.  For a Grade 8 student to dominate local competition is a testament to his ability.  The BC Championships were always going to be a tough assignment as Inno had to wrestle older and stronger athletes throughout the meet.  To finish is the top 8 at the BC's is an incredible feat.

Collingwood's third wrestler at the BC Championships was Eli Hart.  Eli is only in Grade 10 and had the misfortune of being in one of the most competitive weight-classes in the tournament.  The Grade 11 and 12 boys in Eli's weight-class are 'hard as rock' and incredibly strong.  Eli wrestled well and now that he has seen the competition he knows what to expect next year.

It was a terrific year for the Collingwood wrestling program.  Coaches Larisch and DeCotiis look forward to growing the program even more next year.  Special thanks to both coaches for all their hard work.

Athens on the podium with an outstanding 4th place finish.

For those who have never been to a big wrestling meet, it is a truly unique experience.  The Langley Event Centre had six mats going at once at the BC Championships so the action was non-stop.

BC Berth On The Line This Week For Senior Basketball

Last week turned out to be a disappointing experience for the senior boys' basketball team.  The Cavs dropped two out of three games at the Howe Sound Championships.  Thankfully, all of this will be forgotten with a strong showing at this week's Vancouver Sea To Sky Championships.  This new championship will decide what three schools from Collingwood's zone earn a berth in the BC Championships.  Here is Coach Wong's breakdown of last week and the path ahead for the Cavs:

A hungry and focused Cavs team took time out of Family Day to practice yesterday. The practice included bringing in sharp-shooting Collingwood Provincial Champion, Ben Basran, to give an inspirational talk about playoff runs.

The Senior Boys (17-10, #9 AA) embark on uncharted territory as they compete in the newly created Vancouver Sea to Sky Zones this week. The top three teams from the zone qualify for the AA Provincials at the Langley Events Centre, March 4th-7th.

This past week, the Cavs beat Elphinstone 92-57 before losing a heartbreaker to STA 71-66, followed by a loss to Whistler 77-69. Nic Wrixon continues to be a star for the Cavs. On Wednesday, he scored 16 in a row for the team against STA, finishing with a game high 32 points. The Cavs fought back from an 11 point 4th quarter deficit and carried a lead with a minute to go.

Coach Wong has been pleased with the efforts of posts Nate Holm and Barry Castelli in the absence of North Shore All-Star William Zhang. Kourosh Shahbazi has stepped up lately as well, being a lockdown post defender. Earlier in the week, 4th year senior Lochlan Collins was rewarded for his strong play, and was named the North Shore AA Player of the Year.

The Cavs journey starts this week on Wednesday when they take on Whistler in a do-or-die rematch. Tip-off is set for 6pm at King George School. The winner advances to the double knockout round, where 3 of the 4 teams will compete to qualify for provincials. Here is the full schedule for the week ahead:

Senior Girls Fall Short In Provincials Bid

The senior girls' basketball team played three tough games in three days last week in a quest to earn a berth to the BC Championships.  It was always going to be a difficult task to win one of the five berths since the depth of the new Vancouver Sea To Sky zone in AA basketball is truly remarkable.  This task became all but impossible when two of the starting five were unable to make Friday's game.  Despite this setback, the Cavs played inspired basketball and battled to the bitter end.  Here is Coach McLaughlin's tournament report:

Last week the senior girls' basketball team finished off their season with the inaugural Vancouver-Sea-to-Sky Provincial Qualifying Tournament. With 5 potential berths to the Provincial Tournament, the Cavs had a really great shot at earning one of the spots.

Opening the tournament against the #3 ranked York House was a tough game for the Cavs. Having faced them earlier in the year at the ISA tournament, Collingwood knew that they were in for a battle. The opening frame saw York House take advantage of their size as their post players dominated the scoring, Collingwood saw good offence from Dorreh's drives and Stella's ability to get to the free-throw line.

Having established a 23-11 lead, York House needed to be shut down, and with some defensive adjustments, Collingwood managed to slow the Tigers' scoring pace and managed to win the second quarter to head into the halftime only down 9.

Unfortunately, the depth of York House's bench and their length at all positions came into full effect in the second half as they pressed the Cavs and managed to take a significant lead into the final frame. Despite valiant efforts, the Cavs lost the matchup, which put them into a do-or-die situation the following game.

Rachael Chete lead the Cavs scoring with 13 and Sara Fraser followed closely behind with 12. Cudos is given to Rio D for stepping into a difficult defensive role, playing against York House's very talented point guard.

The second game saw the Cavs matching up against Mulgrave for the 5th time this season. Going into this game with a series record of 4-0, the Cavs knew that the Titans would be out for revenge. Though Collingwood managed to find the hoop early and often on drives, Mulgrave once again showed resilience and shooting prowess knocking down four 3-pointers to keep them in the game.

Going into the second quarter, the game continued to be a battle as Collingwood struggled to connect on outside shots and not converting their free throw opportunities, Mulgrave pulled ahead to take a 32-31 lead into half-time.

Coming out of the half-time talk, the Cavs exploded to take an 18 to 6 run through the 3rd quarter lead by Stella G connecting for 8 points. Heading into the fourth, up 49-40, the Cavs continued to score points in the paint, while Mulgrave kept themselves in the game with three different players contributing timely 3's. Despite their great outside shooting, Collingwood managed to extend the lead to 13 points, winning the game 66-53. Rachael C lead all players with 19 points, followed by Stella G contributing 17 and Sara F with 14.

The final game of the tournament for the Cavs was another 'survive and advance' game, with the winner heading to provincials. The matchup pitted Collingwood against a familiar opponent, Seycove. The Cavs knew they'd be in tough having lost twice already to the Seyhawks, and this time they were missing two key players.

However, Nina W and Kiana S, both in Grade 9, stepped up to the challenge and helped the Cavs out in the game. The Cavs did their best to keep things close in the first half, getting to the hoop on drives and hitting some clutch outside shots, however the size of Seycove's post players was too much for the much-undersized Cavaliers. Stella, Ivy, May, and Nina all worked very hard to contain the inside game of Seycove's bigs, but they found themselves in foul trouble and the Seyhawks were able to have their way inside and on the glass.

Despite this, Collingwood found themselves only down by 9 at the half. Unfortunately, some untimely turnovers and the foul trouble caught up with Collingwood as Seycove exploded for a 22 point quarter. Heading into the fourth, down by 20, the Cavs rallied to win the fourth led by the sharpshooting of Sara F and Dorreh A, but unfortunately, it wasn't enough to capture the win, and with that, the Cavs' season was over.  Dorreh lead the Cavs in scoring with 15 and Sara followed closely behind with 13 (nailing three 3's in the process). Nina and Kiana were significant contributors, Kiana hitting a timely 3 and playing tenacious d against the Seycove guards, and Nina contributing 5 points and pulling in some important rebounds.

At the end of the tournament, Dorreh A was honoured as a first-team tournament all-star for her outstanding leadership and consistent contributions.

While the Cavs will lose three seniors, the future continues to look bright with the return of the Grade 11's and several members of the Junior team joining the Senior squad next year.

Dorreh will always be remembered for her powerful drives to the basket.  She was never scared of contact or the opposition.  This attitude led to her selection as a Vancouver Sea To Sky Zone All-Star.

Senior Boys Fall In Zone Playoffs

$

It was always going to be difficult to earn one of the three Vancouver Sea To Sky berths into the Senior Boys' Basketball AA BC Championships.  The 8-team zone championship included four very good Howe Sound teams and King George Secondary who as the #2 team in the province were clearly a step above all others.  When Collingwood fell decisively to King George on Thursday evening, it meant that the Cavs were in a 'do or die' game against Mulgrave on Saturday afternoon.  Unfortunately, it was Mulgrave that brought their 'A Game' while the Collingwood had shooting issues all game long and unexpectedly big problems in the defensive end as well.  As a result, the Cavs' season ended in disappointment on Saturday.

Right from the outset of the game, it seemed Mulgrave was the sharper team.  While the Cavs were getting great looks constantly, they could not make their shots.  In contrast, Mulgrave was knocking down NBA-style three-pointers and more importantly finding great success down low against the Collingwood zone.  In the Cav Classic final in January, the Cavs' defence shut down the Titans' potent offence.  On Saturday, this was not the case.

In the third quarter, the Cavs fell behind by 15 points at one stage.  To their credit, they battled hard and fought their way back into the game many times.  However, whenever momentum seemed to be on their side, the Titans would knock down another three-pointer or find a hole in the Cavs' defence.

The 'never say die' attitude that Lochlan Collins and Nate Holm truly epitomize continued to push the Cavs forward, but the closest Collingwood got was a 6-point deficit and they could never get it any lower.  In the end, Mulgrave were worthy winners.  It was a tough way for all our Grade 12's to finish out their careers, but on the day the Titans were just that little bit better.

Lochlan Collins has been the starting point guard for three years.  As a player, he has been a true coaches' dream as his skills are only surpassed by his heart and dedication.

Nate Holm lays in another basket.  Nate saved his best basketball for his last game as he dominated the boards at both ends of the court.  His uncanny knack for offensive rebounds created multiple second chances for the Cavs.

Will Zhang drives for a basket.  Will had a great season.  He will be counted on for even more next year.

Barry Castelli fights for a rebound.  Barry established himself as a starter partway through the season and was a key member of the team throughout the playoffs.

Cavs Win Silver and Bronze At ISA Championships

Collingwood hosted the ISA Grade 8 Basketball Championships this past weekend.  The event featured an 8-team girls' draw and a 10-team boys' tournament.  The boys came away with the silver medal, while the girls brought home the bronze.

The girls opened the tournament with a solid victory over a feisty Southridge team.  This set up a semi-final against a powerful SMUS squad.  The Cavs played a tremendous first half and were tied with the Blue Jags at halftime.  Unfortunately, some key missed opportunities allowed SMUS to pull ahead in the 4th quarter for the win.  Collingwood bounced back in spectacular fashion with a resounding victory over WPGA to win the bronze.

The boys' team first game was against Meadowridge.  The Cavs sped to an early lead and did not look back.  In the semi-final, Collingwood faced Southridge.  The Storm had won two out of the last three boys' championships so it seemed this might be a tough test for the Cavs.  While the game was relatively close in the first half, a 10-0 run to open the second half put the game away for Collingwood.

In the final, the Cavs faced a Saints B squad that had been bolstered by a couple of their 'A' players. The game was a true 'barnburner' as it went into double overtime.  Collingwood had the last shot and therefore a chance to win the game in both regulation and at the end of the first overtime period.  However, the shots did not fall and Saints pulled away in the second overtime for the win.
