Cross-Country Runners Record PB's At Zone Meet

Collingwood's cross-country team has competed throughout the season in a series of North Shore meets. In years past, the season would be capped off by the Howe Sound Zone Meet. However, due to BC School Sports re-alignment, the season now features the Vancouver Sea To Sky Zone Championship. Thus, the runners headed off to Jericho Park last Tuesday for this new competition. Here is the report from Coach Pool:

The Cross Country season capped off with the Regional Zones meet last Tuesday. Collingwood was well represented and our young team represented the school well. Every runner achieved a personal best and had their best overall result of the season.

Our two senior runners, Zaref Anderson and Lochlan Collins, capped off their Collingwood running careers with great results. Zaref had a personal best time for 5kms while Lochlan had the race of his life and qualified for Provincials. We're sad to see these athletes go, but congratulate them on their great season.

We are pleased with the momentum we built this year and are looking forward to continuing that next season!

Zaref Anderson competed for Collingwood in cross-country in all five years of high school.

Lochlan Collins should be in awesome shape for basketball season. In his debut year on the cross-country team, he was fast enough to qualify for the BC Championships.

Jake DeLuise looking strong in Tuesday's meet.

Grace Virani on her way to a personal best.

Alex Yu also recorded a personal best at the zone championships.

Grade 8 Rugby Earns Semi-Final Berth

The Grade 8 rugby team has enjoyed as terrific season so far. They have posted a 3-1 North Shore league record to earn a home semi-final next Monday at Klahanie Park.

The Cavs have defeated Argyle 30-12, West Van 31-22 and Handsworth 33-32. Their only loss came to Carson Graham who defeated Collingwood 36-33.

Collingwood has also played St. George's and Shawnigan Lake in exhibition games as well as Crossley-Heath who were visiting from England. Although Crossley-Heath was a far more polished side than the Cavs, it was fantastic to see the Canadian boys score three second-half tries.

Cavs Lose Soccer Playoff To Windsor

The senior soccer team fought their way into the North Shore playoffs with last week's 1-0 win over second-place Bodwell. However, the Cavs could not overcome a strong Windsor Dukes team yesterday and were eliminated after their 0-3 loss.

Collingwood knew it was going to be a very tough test especially as star midfielder Harry Philpotts was ruled out of the game with a concussion. They hoped to overcome the lack of true offensive power with a great defensive effort. However, a defensive miscue allowed Windsor to take an early lead. At the 30-minute mark of the first half, the Dukes doubled their lead and things looked bleak for the Cavs.

In the second half, Collingwood pushed to get back in the game. Although they created a couple of good scoring opportunities, there was nothing to really trouble the Windsor keeper. Finally, all caution was thrown to the wind. Coach Yeates summoned Ryan Yacoub from the bench and pushed goalkeeper DJ Moretto into the midfield along with Blaise Benoit who came forward from the back four.

With this unit forcing the tempo, the Cavs created a terrific opportunity to make it 2-1, but the ball was chested off the line by the well-positioned Dukes' defender. In the end, Windsor scored with thirty seconds left to make it 3-0. It was not the finish that the Grade 12 grads had imagined but it was a hard-fought game and Coach Yeates was proud of all his players, especially the grads.

Blaise Benoit was outstanding all year in Collingwood's back-four.

Team captain Tucker Lake was a powerful force for the Cavs this year with his terrific vision and non-stop motor.

It was a tough loss but Collingwood had a great group of Grade 12 players this year. Senior Volleyball Earns Tier 1 Status At ISA's

The senior volleyball team entered the 16-team ISA Championships with the goal of making it into Tier 1 pool play for the second day of competition. The squad knew this would make Saturday at Crofton House a very tough day indeed, but they were determined to challenge themselves. In the end, the Cavs did qualify for Tier 1 play. While they finished 8th, it was a great experience for this very young team. Here is Coach Jolliffe's report:

The Senior Girls Volleyball team competed at the 2019 ISA Varsity Volleyball Championship this past weekend at Crofton House School. Collingwood faced a variety of levels of play over the weekend, testing their skills and pushing them to execute team strategies and systems in tough matches.

The girls fought hard on Friday in their first pool and clinched 2nd place, putting them in Tier 1 of the tournament and amongst a competitive grouping of teams for the second day of competition. The team was tested mentally and physically by their Tier 1 opponents and there were many highlight moments during which individual athletes and the team as a whole stepped up to the high level of competition that Tier 1 presented them with.

The team ended the weekend strongly, fighting until the last point, eager to apply what they learned to their final two weeks of practice. They are preparing to host Zones at home in mid November and to fight for a spot at provincials.

Swim Team Qualifies Four Swimmers For BC Championships

The swim team travelled to Watermania in Richmond last week for the Vancouver Sea To Sky Zone Championships. As is all sports, our swimmers need to qualify for the BC Championships through this brand new zone due to BC School Sports re-aligning zones. In the case of swimming, this has created a much bigger 'super-zone' so the competition to qualify for provincials was fiercer than ever. Here is Coach Yoon's report:

The Collingwood Swim Team recently traveled to Richmond to take part in the annual Sea to Sky zone meet. We had several key members returning from last year's team, and it was great to have some new swimmers from the Grade 8 class representing our school in their first major high school swim meet.

Congratulations to our senior swimmer, Aidan Smith.

Aidan had several top finishes in all four of his individual events and will once again compete at the BC Championships. Aidan won a silver medal last year in the team relays, and we wish him all the best at Provincials.

Grade 8 students Harbour Dollinger and Isavella Barbosa also had strong performances. Harbour competed in six events, and Isavella qualified for Provincials with a 5th place finish in the 100-meter breaststroke. Tommy Dong and Josh Decoutea also qualified for Provincials.

We are pleased to announce that we will be working with the Obakki Foundation to build a water well in South Sudan. Last year's Grads took on this project and were able to fundraise $10,000 to build a well in the village of Katrini. We are excited to continue on with this partnership.

During this school year both campuses will be working on initiatives and awareness for this cause. Treana Peake, founder of the Obakki Foundation, will be visiting both campuses and attending various school events to share with parents and students the different ways they can make a positive impact on the world.

To launch our fundraising, we invite everyone to show their support (and get a jump on holiday shopping) by purchasing from the Obakki shop. 100% of the net proceeds of sales will go towards our project.

When making a purchase in the online Obakki shop, please add
COLLINGWOOD to your last name in the order form so that proceeds are credited to our legacy account.

This year's Poinsettia and Wreath Fundraiser will also be in support of the Obakki Foundation. The order form is NOW OPEN. Deadline for ordering is November 18, 2019.

Soccer Cavs Rally For Win Over Mulgrave

When the senior soccer team fell behind 2-0 to Mulgrave this afternoon things looked bleak. However, Coach Yeates was cool and calm in his halftime talk. He made some technical adjustments and the Cavs roared back to tie the game 2-2 before winning it in penalties.

Collingwood had far more possession in the first half but it was the Titans that took advantage of their opportunities. Their first goal came on a speculative cross from the left-wing that somehow curved into the far right-hand corner. Their second goal came off a corner-kick. When the ball landed, it seemed six Collingwood defenders looked at each other but no one moved. The Mulgrave striker didn't need a second invitation and it was smashed into the back of the net for the 2-0 lead.

The Cavs came out of halftime with renewed vigour. Archie Robertshaw had been brought on at halftime by Coach Yeates. When he was put through with a nice pass, he took his chance perfectly and stroked the ball into the lower left-hand corner and it was 2-1.

Collingwood continued to put on pressure and it was not long before DJ Moretto hammered the ball past the Titans' goalie to make it 2-2. The Cavs continued to press and they were very unlucky when an absolute cannonball off the foot of Tucker Lake smashed off the crossbar and straight down into the hands of the very fortunate keeper.

Regulation time came to an end with a brave diving save by Ryan Yacoub. An obvious trip was somehow missed by the referee and it looked like Mulgrave might win it in the waning seconds, but Ryan was quick off his line and courageously smothered the ball.

Collingwood only needed four shooters in the shootout as all four were perfect and the Titans missed their first penalty and Ryan dove to save their third attempt. Tucker Lake, Blaise Benoit, Arthur Na and Sam Howard all gave the Mulgrave keeper no chance with well-placed powerful shots.

Arthur Na scored Collingwood's third penalty today and was solid throughout the game on the left flank.

David Howard was a ball of energy all game long and created a number of good opportunities for his teammates.

Cavs Off To North Shore Final

The Grade 8 rugby team defeated West Van 46-35 yesterday in a North Shore semi-final. The Cavs now advance to the North Shore Championship game this Thursday at Klahanie. As the score indicates, it was a fantastic display of offensive rugby. Collingwood's attack was multi-faceted and the team scored some glorious tries. Here is the game report from Coach Hall:

On another uncharacteristically sunny November afternoon, the Grade 8 rugby team beat West Van in the North Shore Semi-final to gain a spot in the final this Thursday vs Carson Graham. Collingwood was clicking on offence all game with some slick passing from the backs and some great work at the rucks by the forwards.

At halftime, Collingwood had scored 4 tries were up by a score of 24-14. Unfortunately, every mistake by Collingwood in the second half seemed to result in a try against and all of sudden West Van took a 35-34 lead with less than 15 minutes to play!

Luckily, Collingwood went back on offence and scored two tries in the last 10 minutes to secure a 46-35 win. The boys were ecstatic with the win and know they will have to be at their best this Thursday vs. Carson Graham.

Cavs Off To Usual 2-0 Start At BC Championships

It has been many years since the senior field hockey team has lost a game on Day 1 of the BC Championships and today was no different. The Cavs defeated the Lambrick Park Lions 3-0 this morning and then easily dispatched the Southridge Storm 7-0 this afternoon.

Collingwood was somewhat lacklustre against the Lions. Coach Gold had asked for an early goal to set the tone and instead she saw her team being beat to the ball and slow to react to rebounds or tip opportunities. Finally, with two minutes left in the half, Liz Mathisen scored from an unlikely angle and the Cavs went into halftime up 1-0.

Collingwood started the second half with greater focus and at the seven-minute mark, Jamie Borthwick bounced a shot past the Lion's keeper. Jacqueline Webb put the game out of reach with a goal off a goalmouth scramble.

Maisie Hastings led the way against Southridge as she scored a hat-trick. Seli Edstrand, McKinley Kennedy, Maddie Augustus and Jamie each added a goal.

Liz Mathisen scored the Cavs' first goal at the BC Championships.

Maisie Hastings scored two first-half goals against Southridge and then completed the hat-trick three minutes into the second half.

Jacqueline Webb made sure there was no hope of a Lambrick Park comeback with the crucial third goal in this morning's game.

A-Maising Day For Field Hockey Cavs

Maisie Hastings scored her second hat-trick of the BC Field Hockey AA Championships this morning against the JL Crowe Hawks and then followed this up with another hat-trick this afternoon against GW Graham. Maisie's nine goals in four games has helped propel the Cavs into the semi-finals tomorrow. Collingwood will face York House at 11:00am.

The Cavs could not have got off to a better start in the morning game against the Crowe-Hawks as Kaiden Stanley scored a beautiful reverse-sweep goal less than one minute into the game. Jamie Borthwick then scored at the eight-minute mark on a tip off a Bronwyn Bird shot. Maisie then blasted a ball past the Hawks' keeper to make it 3-0. When Olivia Huebner knocked in a rebound, the Cavs were up 4-0 just before halftime.

The Hawks scored early in the second half to make it 4-1 but Collingwood roared back immediately when Maisie scored her second goal on a pass from Kaiden. Maisie then completed her second hat-trick of the BC Championships when she converted a nice pass from Maddie Augustus. Maddie then tipped in a shot to make it 7-1. Jamie scored the last two goals of the game to notch her own hat-trick. Her second goal came off a nice pass from Jacqueline Webb.

In the afternoon tilt against GW Graham, Maisie scored two goals in the first five minutes. The second was particularly nice as she batted an errant ball out of mid-air and then blasted it in. Bronwyn then scored off a short-corner to make it 3-0. Jamie made it 4-0 and then Maddie tipped in a shot for a 5-0 lead at half. Maisie's ninth goal of the tournament came early in the second half as she tucked it in shortside against the Grizzlies' keeper. The Grizzlies would score mid-way through the second half but Collingwood cruised to a 5-1 win.

Maisie Hastings has three hat-tricks in four games.

McKinley Kennedy has been rock-solid for the Cavs all year long as their middle-defender.

Lyla Mollard has been a great addition to this year's team.

Sophie Kennedy is another new addition to the squad and has played terrific hockey all year long too.

Gabbi Villamil is another of Collingwood's outstanding defenders.

The Grade 8 rugby team avenged their league loss to Carson Graham by defeating the Eagles 31-14 in the North Shore Final today. It was a fantastic display of rugby by the Cavs, especially in the second half when they pulled away from Carson to establish a 24-7 lead, which basically assured the win. Cavs Win Third Straight BC Field Hockey Title

The senior field hockey team defeated Shawnigan Lake School (SLS) 2-0 yesterday to win their third straight BC AA Field Hockey Championship. The last time any school completed a three-peat was way back in 97-99, when Collingwood was also the dominant school in AA field hockey.

The two semi-final matches were probably the matches of the day as opposed to the final. The Cavs narrowly defeated York House 2-1 and it took every ounce of energy to do so. Kaiden Stanley opened the scoring for Collingwood on a terrific sweep. When Bronwyn Bird scored on an outstanding individual effort right before halftime, it seemed the Cavs were on their way to a solid victory over the plucky Yorkies.

However, York House were far from done and when they scored seven minutes into the second half and it was game on. There were a few interesting referee interpretations along the way but the Cavs kept their composure and despite some scary moments, they hung on for victory.

Meanwhile, SLS was involved in their own barnburner. Down 1-0 with two minutes to go, they tied the game against Little Flower Academy and then advanced to the final by winning the shootout.

Perhaps, this emotional win took a lot out of the Stags as the final turned out to be rather anticlimactic after the tense semi-finals. Collingwood was dominant throughout the game. The Cavs took a 1-0 lead 14-minutes in when McKinley Kennedy swept a rebound into the net. The goal came off a short-corner. Kaiden's hard shot was stopped, but Bronwyn pushed the ball back towards the net and McKinley was there to knock it in.

The Cavs went into halftime up 1-0 and looked firmly in control. Nine minutes into the second- half, McKinley struck again as she deflected another short-corner shot from Bronwyn into the net. It was a terrific touch.

SLS was never able to amount a sustained attack and in the end, it was a very convincing victory for the Cavs.

A huge congratulations to the team and coaches Ashleigh Gold, Catherine Underwood and Sara Bruner. The Collingwood coaching staff is truly the best in the province. And another big thank you to Athletic Therapist Gavin Leung who has worked long hours to keep the team healthy and on the field.

Cavs Host Volleyball Zone Championships

The senior volleyball team finished their season on Wednesday at the AA Vancouver Sea To Sky Zone Championships.  Collingwood was the site of Pool A play on the first day of this competition.  York House, Elphinstone and St. Pat's joined the Cavs in Pool A.  It was an exciting day of volleyball, which was thoroughly entertaining for all who dropped into the gym to watch. Although the Cavs did not win a match, they played extremely well, especially in their first match against Elphinstone.  With a number of key players returning next year, this sort of competition is exactly what Coach Jolliffe wanted to help his team get ready for next season.

Justine Brongers goes high for a spike in the Elphinstone game.

Hana Salehi looks to set Dahlia Marsden-Wong up for a spike.

Sophia Garofalo gets low to pass a ball to her teammates.

The team showed enormous enthusiasm throughout the tournament despite some very tough games.

The Cavs celebrate a point.

Coaches Brad Jolliffe and Grant Harder did an amazing job with the senior team this year.

Tommy Brings Home BC Bronze

The senior swim team travelled to Watermania in Richmond for the BC Championships this past Friday and Saturday.  The story of the weekend was Tommy Dong who brought home a bronze medal.  Here is Coach Yoon's report:

The 2019 swim season came to an end this past weekend with 4 Collingwood students competing at the BC championships in Richmond.

Despite having fewer swimmers qualifying for provincials compared to previous years, the team still managed to put together some strong finishes, especially from our senior students.

Aidan Smith did very well in the preliminaries and qualified for the medal rounds in 3 events.  Aidan's best finish came in the very competitive 100-meter freestyle race where he came in 5th place. Aidan has been a competitive swimmer for many years. He trains rigorously with his club team, but has represented the Collingwood Swim Team on many occasions and helped the school win a silver medal last year in the 200-meter Medley relay event. Aidan will be graduating this year; we wish him all the best next year and also thank him for being an excellent representative for Collingwood.

Grade 11 student Tommy Dong also made it to the finals for 2 events. Tommy had the fastest time in the preliminary round in the 100-meter breaststroke and was able to capture the bronze medal in the finals. In the finals, Tommy was in first place heading into the last stretch, but the last 25 meters was very competitive as every swimmer was sprinting to the end. Tommy will definitely be back next year and will once again be a strong candidate to medal. With Tommy capturing the bronze medal, the Collingwood Swim Team has won a medal at the provincials the last 3 years.

Isavella Barbosa also qualified for provincials in the 100-meter breaststroke. Qualifying for provincials as a grade 8 student is very impressive as Isavella was competing against older students in Grade 11 and 12. Isavella has had a great start to her high school swimming career, and we look forward to seeing her again for many years to come.

Mrs. Carlbeck and I would like to thank all our swimmers this past year for their hard work and a special thank you to Avery Kirstiuk for coaching the team.

Cavs Win Bronze At Bridgeman Cup

The senior field hockey is enjoying a rare day of rest on Thanksgiving Monday after another terrific performance at the Bridgman Cup. The Bridgman Cup brings together the finest AA and AAA teams from across the province. The three-day tournament is definitely a chance to see exactly how you stack up against the other great teams in BC.

In Collingwood's case, it is clear that the Cavs are once again one of the elite teams in the province. The Cavs finished in third-place, with their only loss coming to Handsworth in the semi-final.

Last year, Collingwood lost to Handsworth in the final. Although the team finished one spot lower this year, Coach Ashleigh Gold felt that the team's performance was even stronger than last year. This year's team was fighting injury issues but despite that they came together for five impressive wins.

The Cavs were quick out of the gate on Friday morning when they defeated STA 8-0. This was to be the only easy game of the tournament for Collingwood. On Friday afternoon, the team pushed their record to 2-0 with a hard-fought 1-0 win over West Van.

On Saturday morning, the Cavs sealed top spot in their pool with a 3-0 win over Kelowna Secondary. This set up an afternoon clash with arch-rival Crofton House. The Cavs dominated the game, but only came away with a 2-1 win. This put them into the semi-finals against Handsworth.

Unlike the previous game against Handsworth when the Royals ran rampant all over the Cavs, this time Collingwood was ready for the challenge. The team had three glorious scoring opportunities but they hit the post, missed a sure-fire tip-in chance and then had another sure goal knocked away by a Royals' defender. In the end, Collingwood fell 1-0.

The third-place game saw Collingwood defeat South Delta Secondary for the bronze. Coaches Gold, Underwood and Bruner were thrilled with the team's performance. The Cavs will now look to repeat as ISA Champions when they travel to Crofton House this weekend.
