Basketball season officially started last week and as usual Collingwood was front and centre as the school hosted the Junior Cav Classic.  This year the tournament featured six girls' teams and eight boys' teams.  The quality of play was excellent as Walnut Grove defeated St. Pat's in a the girls' final.  In the boys' final, Carson Graham overcame a tough Kits team to take home the trophy.  The Collingwood teams had a tough start to the tournament but both won their final game.  The girls defeated Carson Graham, while the boys were victors over Shawnigan Lake School.  A big thanks to Mr. Hautz and Ms. Mulock for all their work in organizing the tournament.

Lochlan Collins will be leading the Cavs into action at 11:00am on Thursday.

The Grade 9/10 girls' basketball team opened North Shore league play in style with a convincing win over STA yesterday.  Here is Coach Mulock's game report:

The Junior Girls Cavaliers had their first league game at home last night against STA. The girls had momentum after winning their last game of the Cav Classic Tournament against Carson Graham and were looking forward to league play. The Cavs were slow to start the game, but once they got their first basket their energy picked up and they led the rest of the game. Nina Winckler and Sam Waugh had strong performances offensively for the Cavs scoring 9 points respectively and Kiana Shahbazi also had a great performance scoring 7 points. Angela Guan played well for the Cavs defensively and scored her first 3 pointer. The final score of the game was Cavs 47 - STA 23. The Cavs play again on Thursday December 5th against Argyle at Argyle.

Grade 8 Cavs Off To 2-0 Start

The Grade 8 boys' basketball team is off to a fantastic 2-0 start in North Shore league play.  Not only have the Cavs won their first two games but they have defeated two perennial basketball powers - Handsworth and STA.  Here is Coach Yoon's report:

Mr. Vidic and I are very excited to be working with this year’s Grade 8 boys basketball team. This was a strong team in Grade 7, and the boys are off to a strong start and transitioning well against high school competition.

On Monday, we had our first league game against Handsworth. The boys played a very hard game, and we were able to pull out a 59-50 victory. It was a close contest from start to finish. Mr. Vidic did a great job rotating the lineups, and the team shot very well from the free-throw line, which prevented Handsworth from generating any momentum and pulling away.

James Holm was clutch in the final minutes of the game by hitting a huge 3 pointer that gave us the lead; he followed up with another great play by converting on give and go layup from Max Fraser allowing us to close out the game. Handsworth traditionally has one of the stronger Grade 8 teams on the North Shore, and it was great to see the boys step up to the challenge. A special thanks to all the senior boys for their support towards the end of the game by cheering the Grade 8s to victory.

The team played our second league game on Wednesday, Dec 4, against STA and won convincingly 53-16. Mr. Vidic continued to sort out the offense, and we were happy to see the boys improve their team play, especially on the defensive end. Henry Li, Rio Yassin, and Alex Yu all had good games, and Joaquin Lupton played exceptionally well on both ends of the court. Max Fraser finished the game with 17 points.  The Grade 8 boys play next against Carson Graham on Monday, Dec 9.

The senior boys' basketball team defeated Archbishop MacDonald from Edmonton today in the opening game of the No Regrets tournament.  The Cavs tipped off at 11:00am, which ensured a full house as the entire Morven campus was on Flex Block which meant that all 600 students were in the gym.  It was a great atmosphere and the hometown Cavs did not disappoint as they pulled away in the second half for a 79-52 victory.

Lochlan Collins led the way with 17 points.  Will Zhang was right behind with 15 points.  Nate Holm was also a key cog in the big win as he notched an important double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds.  The Cavs now play at 7:30pm tomorrow.

14th Annual Student Choreography Show

December 11 and 12, 7:00pm - 9:00pm
Darlene S. Howard Theatre, Morven Campus

Tickets are available at the door for $10, free for Collingwood students, faculty and staff.

This show is the culmination of a major project for the senior dance classes and companies. The students study the elements of dance and explore different aspects of the choreographic process. Through improvisations, problem-solving and short movement studies, students discover their very own movement vocabulary. By nature, we are all dancers, with or without years of training. The choreographic process, whether one wishes to be a choreographer or not, is a superb model for thinking, assembling and creating. Creativity is important everywhere we go. We look forward to seeing you at the show!

Cavs Finish 2-2 At No Regrets

The senior boys' basketball team performed very well at the No Regrets tournament this weekend.  They finished 2-2 despite being very short-handed on Saturday.  The Cavs played tremendous basketball against Pitt Meadows on Friday night but eventually the Air Force pulled away in the 4th quarter.  On Saturday morning, the team rallied from a 9-point deficit in the last two minutes to defeat Killarney 76-75.  On Saturday afternoon, it was a different story as AA #3 ranked DP Todd defeated the Cavs.  Nevertheless, it was a terrific tournament for the team and Lochlan Collins was awarded a scholarship.  This was very well-deserved.

Lochlan Collins drives for 2 points against Killarney.

Mark Liu fights for space against Pitt Meadows on Friday night.

Casra Mohammedrezai fights for a rebound against Killarney.

Barry Castelli takes it hard to the hoop against Pitt Meadows.

Lochlan Collins receives his scholarship cheque on Saturday night at the closing ceremonies.

Early Endurance Test For Senior Girls' Basketball

The senior girls' basketball team has had an incredibly busy first two week's of play.  With the season barely started, the Cavs have already played seven games.  Here is Coach McLaughlin's report on her team's early season exploits:

The Senior Girls Basketball team's season started off with two big tournaments and some of the toughest North Shore competition.

The season opened with the girls competing in the Big Ticket Tournament, a tournament featuring some of the top teams from all the divisions across the province. Though the girls faced perennial AAA powerhouse, Riverside Rapids, losing in the opening round, they bounced back to play North Surrey in the second round and came away with a solid win.

In the final round of the tournament, the Cavs came up against Burnaby South, who managed to pull away from the Cavs in the final quarter. What makes this tournament so special, and something to strive to compete in, is not only the top-notch competition, but, that every team entered can nominate two senior players to vie for one of forty $1000 scholarships. Cav Captain, Dorreh Assadi, was awarded one of these scholarships.

Following the Big Ticket, the Cavs opened up league play against a very competitive and accomplished STA team. The squad was in for quite the battle, but with some team goals set, they competed fiercely against this formidable foe. Though the final score indicated a loss for the Cavs, it was a moral victory as they achieved all the goals they had set and did not give up fighting the entire game.

This past weekend saw team head across town to compete in the ISA tournament at York House. The opening round pitted the Cavs against the SMUS Blue Jags. With both teams having short benches, it was a battle of fitness and foul management. It was a tightly fought game, with the Cavs coming out ahead despite some poor shooting from the free-throw line and leaving multiple points on the rim.

Rachael played phenomenal defence against SMUS's strongest player and that certainly helped dictate the outcome of the game. Timely baskets down the stretch from Sara, Dorreh, Kiera, Tiffany, and May sealed the victory for the Cavs.

The Semi-Final matchup featured the Cavs against the hosts, York House. Unfortunately for the Cavs, the deep bench and deep shooting of York House, helped the Tigers secure the win.

The Semi-Final loss pushed the Cavs into the Bronze medal game against old rivals, Mulgrave. The Cavs took a strong lead in the first quarter, but Mulgrave battled back to keep it close going into half-time.

Entering into the third quarter, too many turnovers by the Cavs allowed the Titans to take a small lead going into the fourth. However, through the fourth, the Cavs buckled down on the D and started to convert on some beautiful passes in and around the basket.

When the final whistle blew, the Cavs  were victorious in earning the Bronze medal. Kiera, Dorreh, Rachel, and Sara were all keys to the Cavs' success at different points in the game.

The victory cannot be savoured for too long, however, because league play continues Tuesday night with another match-up against Mulgrave, who will surely be looking to avenge their loss on Saturday. The girls then head to Carson Graham on Thursday and West Van on Monday to wrap up the pre-holiday schedule.

Dorreh Assadi earned a $1000 scholarship for herself at The Big Ticket tournament.

Great Deja Vu - Cavs Defeat Titans Again

The senior girls' basketball team defeated Mulgrave in North Shore league action last night.  This was their second big win over the Titans in four days.  This definitely gives them bragging rights over their local rival.  Here is Coach McLaughlin's report:

For the second time in four days, the Sr Girls Basketball team faced off against their "down-the-highway-rivals", Mulgrave Titans. Having just faced off in the Bronze medal game of the ISA's, the two teams were well prepared for each other.

The opening frame was fraught with some frantic play, as both teams settled into the game. Mulgrave continued to work on their half-court trap, which the Cavs were moderately successful at breaking, but couldn't always complete the play, leaving a few points up on the backboard and hoop. At the end of the first quarter, it was 12-9 Mulgrave.

Second-quarter action was a bit more settled, with the Cavs starting to convert on their drives and dishes and connecting on their outside shots. Stella G contributed 6 of her 10 points in the quarter, followed by Dorreh A and Rachael C's timely threes. Heading into the half, it was 26-21 for the Cavs.

Stepping up to the challenge to protect their home court, the Cavs continued to work hard to keep the Titans out of the key and limit their second shots. May C came up big on several occasions, pulling in big boards and running the floor hard. With some great ball movement and nice take-ons, the Cavs extended their lead to 11 points, heading into the fourth up 43-32.

Down by 11, Mulgrave switched tactics to play man-to-man defence and looked to extend the pressure full court. The gamble did catch the Cavs off-guard once or twice, but it also opened up the opportunities for more fast-break layups.  Sara F attacked the hoop with ferocity, scoring 8 of her 14 points in the final frame, and Kiera M was consistently in the right place to complete the offensive attack, netting 6 of her 14 down the stretch. When the final buzzer sounded, it was 61-43 for Collingwood.

It was a great team effort overall, with every player contributing in different ways. Four players scored in double digits, multiple players had 4 or more assists, and everyone played smart defence. The Cavs will look to take this momentum into Thursday's game at Carson Graham.

Kiera McCord scored 14 points in the Cavs' big win last night.

Cross-Country Runners Record PB's At Zone Meet

Collingwood's cross-country team has competed throughout the season in a series of North Shore meets. In years past, the season would be capped off by the Howe Sound Zone Meet. However, due to BC School Sports re-alignment, the season now features the Vancouver Sea To Sky Zone Championship. Thus, the runners headed off to Jericho Park last Tuesday for this new competition. Here is the report from Coach Pool:

The Cross Country season capped off with the Regional Zones meet last Tuesday. Collingwood was well represented and our young team represented the school well. Every runner achieved a personal best and had their best overall result of the season.

Our two senior runners, Zaref Anderson and Lochlan Collins, capped off their Collingwood running careers with great results. Zaref had a personal best time for 5kms while Lochlan had the race of his life and qualified for Provincials. We're sad to see these athletes go, but congratulate them on their great season.

We are pleased with the momentum we built this year and are looking forward to continuing that next season!

Zaref Anderson competed for Collingwood in cross-country in all five years of high school.

Lochlan Collins should be in awesome shape for basketball season. In his debut year on the cross-country team, he was fast enough to qualify for the BC Championships.

Jake DeLuise looking strong in Tuesday's meet.

Grace Virani on her way to a personal best.

Alex Yu also recorded a personal best at the zone championships.

Senior Cavs Defeat Eagles

The senior girls' basketball team defeated the Carson Graham Eagles yesterday in North Shore league action.  This caps a great week for the team.  Here is Coach McLaughlin's game report:

While it was a short trip down the highway to play Thursday night's game against Carson Graham, it was a game that seemingly lasted forever. A battle pitting the very tall and strong Carson Graham Eagles against a rather reduced bench for the Senior Cavalier Girls.

The opening quarter was a defensive battle, with neither team really finding much rhythm, as the Cavs got used to the Carson hoops, they matched the Eagles' scoring and came out of the first tied 11-11. The second quarter was fairly similar, but for every fast break the Cavs got against the Carson press, the Eagles retaliated by putting the ball inside to their post players. Heading into half-time, the Cavs held a slight edge 25-23.

The third quarter was a much different story, finally getting into a groove, the Cavs started firing on all cylinders. With everyone contributing to the scoresheet, driving and finishing, and making their free throws, Collingwood extended their lead 50-37. The fourth quarter saw both teams heat up at the hoop with Carson sinking 19 points and the Cavs netting 22.

At the final horn, it was a 72-56 victory for the Cavs. Once again, it was a massive team effort with all players seeing the floor and contributing in many significant ways. Dorreh, Sara, and Rachael all found ways to get to the hoop and the line, while Kiera and Stella found success around the hoop. May and Tiffany continued their strong play off the bench, ripping down boards and always being in the right place to keep the offence going and find some solid scoring opportunities. Special mention goes out to Lucy for helping the squad out with some relief minutes, especially down the stretch.

The Cavs now face the West Vancouver Highlanders on Monday at West Van in their final game before the break.

Rachael Chete had a great game yesterday against Carson Graham.

Collingwood Wrestling Is Back And Looking Good

After a three-year hiatus, the Collingwood wrestling program is back.  A major recruiting drive has was led by Mr. Larisch and as a result over 15 Collingwood athletes have hit the mats in the past three weeks.  This past Friday, Mr. Larisch took a small group of novice wrestlers to the 'War on Floor' in Coquitlam.

Sadly, the team's most experienced wrestler, Eli Hart, was not able to participate due to injury.  However, Eli was a major contributor that day as a coach and helper.

Innocenzo De Cotiis led the way as he kept his perfect record intact with 3 straight wins.  Inno comes from a famous wrestling family and his great natural instincts were on display all day long as he posted 8-0, 10-0 and 10-0 victories on his way to the gold medal.  Clearly, Inno has huge potential in this sport.

Quinn Reynolds also had a great day as he posted a 2-2 record.  He was unlucky to draw the eventual winner in his weight-class in his first match.  He then went on to win two matches before narrowly losing in the bronze medal match.

Fredrick Li had a terrific day as well.  Fred is extremely aggressive and has loads of potential.  He just lacks a little polish.  Fred was winning all three of his matches at one point, but eventually posted a 1-2 record on the day.

Dillon McLean was Collingwood's fourth wrestler on the day.  Dillon was extremely competitive in his matches, but his inexperience made it very difficult for him.  Nevertheless, he made things tough for his opponents and will only get better with more time on the mat in practice.

Inno celebrates with his gold medal.  He now has a 9-0 record this year.

Inno and Eli looking good when they arrive for the meet at Pinetree Secondary.

On Monday, the Grade 8 boys' basketball team lost a close game to West Van in North Shore league play.  The Cavs did not need to wait long to avenge that loss as they defeated the Highlanders 49-48 today in the final of the Capilano University tournament.  This exciting win capped off a great three days of basketball as Collingwood defeated Carson Graham and Sentinel to earn their berth in the final.  Coach Vidic is undoubtedly looking forward to the three-week Christmas Break, but he will be anxious to get his talented squad back on the floor in the new year as they definitely have a championship pedigree to them.

The swim team travelled to Watermania in Richmond last week for the Vancouver Sea To Sky Zone Championships. As is all sports, our swimmers need to qualify for the BC Championships through this brand new zone due to BC School Sports re-aligning zones. In the case of swimming, this has created a much bigger 'super-zone' so the competition to qualify for provincials was fiercer than ever. Here is Coach Yoon's report:

The Collingwood Swim Team recently traveled to Richmond to take part in the annual Sea to Sky zone meet. We had several key members returning from last year's team, and it was great to have some new swimmers from the Grade 8 class representing our school in their first major high school swim meet.

Congratulations to our senior swimmer, Aidan Smith.

Aidan had several top finishes in all four of his individual events and will once again compete at the BC Championships. Aidan won a silver medal last year in the team relays, and we wish him all the best at Provincials.

Grade 8 students Harbour Dollinger and Isavella Barbosa also had strong performances. Harbour competed in six events, and Isavella qualified for Provincials with a 5th place finish in the 100-meter breaststroke. Tommy Dong and Josh Decoutea also qualified for Provincials.
