Toothless Sabrecats No Match For Soccer Cavs

After garnering only three of a possible six points in their first two league games, the senior soccer team knew they needed to take the full three points from the Sutherland Sabres yesterday afternoon. The team responded with its best performance of the year with a convincing 5-0 win.

Right from the start the team played some beautiful one-touch soccer that moved the ball quickly past the Sabre defenders. Dj Moretto, Tucker Lake, Blaise Benoit and Harry Philpotts were central to this attack and Sam Howard found himself being fed constant balls down the left flank. Sam in turn put a series of terrific crosses into the 18-yard box.

However, the Cavs did not break through until the 26-minute mark. David Howard started things off by gathering the ball just inside Cavs' half. After a powerful run where he left numerous defenders in his wake, he released Archie Robertshaw into space. Archie's initial shot was saved but he stroked the rebound into the net for a 1-0 lead.

Two minutes later, Sutherland were penalized for a handball within the box. Tucker calmly put it home and the Cavs were up 2-0.

The Cavs had a perfect start to the second half when Blaise put through a fabulous ball for Casra Mohammedrezai to run onto. Casra turned on the afterburners to catch up to the ball and then slid past the sprawling keeper.

Collingwood took a 4-0 lead when some pressure by Massimo Beltramo forced the Sabre player into an errant kick. The ball deflected back to David's feet and seconds later it was in the back of the net after one of David's trademark blasts.

The final goal came when Kourosh Shahbazi put Sam into space with a lovely weighted pass. Sam made no mistake and it was a 5-0 final for the Cavs. Ryan Yacoub posted his first shut-out in senior soccer, which is a terrific accomplishment for a Grade 10 player.

Harry Philpotts continues to be one of Collingwood's most influential players with his control of the midfield each game.

Casra's goal at the 4-minute mark of the second half put the game out of reach as Collingwood breezed to a 5-0 win.

Junior Field Hockey Cavs Tie Handsworth

The junior field hockey played a terrific game yesterday and tied the Handsworth Blue team 1-1. Here is the game report from Coach Mulock.

The Jr Girls Field Hockey team faced Handsworth Blue in their second game of the season. The Cavs had a slow start to the game and got a wake up call from the Handsworth blue team when they scored early in the first half.

After the goal the Cavs got hungry and pressured the Handsworth defensive line keeping it in their end and forcing turnovers. Paige Brossard had a great shot on net for the Cavs and closed the gap and made it a tied game, 1-1 in the first half.

Despite coming out with lots of energy the second half and coming close to scoring a few times, the Cavs ended the game with a final score of 1-1. Emily Abdel-Barr and Paige Brossard had great performances for the team and worked well with one another moving the play from side to side. Lexi Bannister also had a stellar performance in the net, making many great saves for the Cavs.

The Jr Girls play Argyle next week on Tuesday October 15th.

Emily Abdel-Barr had a strong game for the Cavs yesterday.

Field Hockey Cavs 3-1 In Premier League Play

The senior field hockey defeated the Argyle Pipers 5-0 to complete their North Shore league play for the season. The Cavs were the only AA team in the North Shore Premier league and they showed their class by posting a 3-1 record. Collingwood also defeated West Van 4-1 and Carson Graham 7-0. Their only loss came to AAA powerhouse Handsworth.

In the West Van game, there were four different scorers as Kaiden Stanley, Lilah Sawers, Maisie Hastings and Bronwyn Bird all knocked in one goal.

In the Carson game, Jamie Borthwick led the way with a hat-trick. Lilah added two goals, while Bronwyn and Maddy Augustus kicked in one each.

The Handsworth game was a disappointment as the Cavs had all the early pressure but could not get that all important first goal. The Royals took a 1-0 lead into halftime, but quickly increased this to 4-0 before Maisie scored to make it 4-1. The final was 5-1 and the Cavs learned a valuable lesson that day about playing as a team not individuals.

In the Argyle game, Liz Mathisen got into the action with two goals. Bronwyn and Maddy both added another to their yearly total and Olivia Huebner scored as well.

Collingwood is now off to the Bridgman Cup, which is the most prestigious tournament in BC as it combines the best AA and AAA teams in the province. Last year, the Cavs made it all the way to final. This is a three-day tournament and games begin on Friday morning.

Cavs Win Bronze At Bridgeman Cup

The senior field hockey is enjoying a rare day of rest on Thanksgiving Monday after another terrific performance at the Bridgman Cup. The Bridgman Cup brings together the finest AA and AAA teams from across the province. The three-day tournament is definitely a chance to see exactly how you stack up against the other great teams in BC.

In Collingwood's case, it is clear that the Cavs are once again one of the elite teams in the province. The Cavs finished in third-place, with their only loss coming to Handsworth in the semi-final.

Last year, Collingwood lost to Handsworth in the final. Although the team finished one spot lower this year, Coach Ashleigh Gold felt that the team's performance was even stronger than last year. This year's team was fighting injury issues but despite that they came together for five impressive wins.

The Cavs were quick out of the gate on Friday morning when they defeated STA 8-0. This was to be the only easy game of the tournament for Collingwood. On Friday afternoon, the team pushed their record to 2-0 with a hard-fought 1-0 win over West Van.

On Saturday morning, the Cavs sealed top spot in their pool with a 3-0 win over Kelowna Secondary. This set up an afternoon clash with arch-rival Crofton House. The Cavs dominated the game, but only came away with a 2-1 win. This put them into the semi-finals against Handsworth.

Unlike the previous game against Handsworth when the Royals ran rampant all over the Cavs, this time Collingwood was ready for the challenge. The team had three glorious scoring opportunities but they hit the post, missed a sure-fire tip-in chance and then had another sure goal knocked away by a Royals' defender. In the end, Collingwood fell 1-0.

The third-place game saw Collingwood defeat South Delta Secondary for the bronze. Coaches Gold, Underwood and Bruner were thrilled with the team's performance. The Cavs will now look to repeat as ISA Champions when they travel to Crofton House this weekend.

Cavs Beat Seyhawks In Soccer Action

The senior soccer team defeated Seycove 4-2 yesterday to push their league record to 2-1-1. The Cavs now have two outright wins, one shootout win and one shootout loss. They are currently tied with Windsor for third-place with nine points. With this in mind, tomorrow's game against Windsor has massive playoff implications.

Collingwood got off to a great start against Seycove when a slick passing movement between DJ Moretto and Arthur Na sprung Casra Mohammedrezai free in the 18-yard box. Casra's low blast beat the keeper and the Cavs were up 1-0 only four minutes into the game. Six minutes later, Owen Huston headed a ball down off a cross and then had so much time that he volleyed into the net.

The early 2-0 lead and Seycove's lacklustre performance combined to give the Cavs' an unhealthy sense of self-worth and play became very ragged as a result. Collingwood had three or four great opportunities to put themselves three or four up, but these chances were squandered. A Seyhawks' counter-attack resulted in some open space and a shot deflected off a Collingwood defender and into the net and suddenly it was 2-1.

This re-focused the team and when David Howard was pulled down by the keeper, he cooly slotted home the penalty kick to restore a two-goal lead. Although the team was up 3-1 at half, Coach Yeates was far from satisfied.

The game was truly put out of reach early in the second half when Archie Robertshaw took advantage of some shoddy Seycove defence and calmly slid the ball past the keeper. It was a well-taken opportunity by Archie.

The Cavs now know that their playoff lives may come down to tomorrow's game. A much better effort is expected as Coach Yeates stressed the need for better teamwork and intensity with so much riding on this game.

Massimo Beltramo (R) has been a mainstay of the back four this year.

Soccer Cavs Finish 4th At BC's

The senior girls' soccer team finished 4th at the BC Championships after losing the bronze medal game this morning to Archbishop Carney 2-0. This was the second tough loss in less than 24 hours for the Cavs as they had lost a 3-2 heartbreaker in the semi-final. However, Coach Yeates was very clear that he could not be prouder of his team as they battled all tournament-long and played some superb soccer along the way.

The Cavs opened pool play with a 1-1 tie with Holy Cross. They then beat Frances Kelsey 3-0. This set-up a crucial Friday morning match against South Kamloops. South Kam only needed a tie to advance out of the pool, while Collingwood needed the win. With the pressure on, the Cavs won 2-0 and advanced the semi-finals to play Carihi Secondary.

Carihi were the host team so they had plenty of support on the sidelines as their fans were out in full force. At halftime, it was 0-0. Unfortunately, Carihi blew the game open with three quick goals. This is when Collingwood showed their true colours as they fought their way back into the game with two goals of their own. Sadly, no extra time was played and the comeback fell just short.

In this morning's game, Collingwood played their hearts out, but Carney got the bounces and the Cavs finished just out of the medals. Nevertheless, it was a fantastic season for a terrific group of athletes. Coaches Yeates, Mulock and Gold are already looking forward to next season.

These girls should be proud. They are only the second team in Collingwood history to make the BC Championships.

The team was led by an amazing group of Grade 12's. L to R - Tannis McKay, Hailey Gayda, Rachel Graham, Kayleigh Garland, Izzy Fry and Bella Parker.

Cricketers Win Lower Mainland Championship

The cricket team capped off a successful season by winning the Lower Mainland Championship in very convincing fashion. Here is Coach Diaz's report:

The Collingwood cricket team became the 2019 Lower Mainland Cricket Champions when they defeated Moscrop Secondary in the Finals yesterday. This is only the third time in Collingwood Cricket history that the Cavaliers take the top spot.

It was a hard fought final game against a very capable Moscrop team who managed to wicket our top three batters early in the game. Despite this, the rest of the Cavaliers' squad managed to produce enough runs to outscore Moscrop 93 to 92 in only 12 of the allowed 16 innings.

It was a convincing victory and an emotional win for our players, their families, and their happy coaches. Every athlete played an important role in the win and we wish to acknowledge some outstanding performances.

Benjamin Wrixon scored 19 runs, Brent Anderson scored 12 runs and Tariq Alibhai contributed 15 runs including a 6 point hit over the boundary which was the biggest hit of the match. There were also extraordinary performances in fielding and bowling by Kris Suri, Michael Kennedy, Brent Anderson and Ben Wrixon who collectively took a number of wickets and managed to minimize the amount of runs scored by Moscrop.

Bravo Collingwood!

Junior Cavs Win ISA Field Hockey Bronze

The junior field hockey team travelled to Shawnigan Lake this weekend for the ISA Championships. The Cavs returned home with a 3-1 record and the bronze medal. Collingwood's only loss came in the semi-final to Crofton House in a shoot-out. However, the team re-grouped and finished the day with a 5-3 win over York House to finish third.

The Cavs opened the tournament Friday morning with a decisive 7-0 win over Shawnigan B. The Stags B squad was no match for Collingwood as they stormed out to an early lead and then began to work on moving the ball into space in the second half. Coco Mantel led the way with two goals. Also scoring were Olivia Okano, Bella Connell, Emily Abdel-Barr, Serena Zhu and Paige Venier. Kelly Layden recorded the shut-out.

In the afternoon, the Cavs defeated York House 3-0. All three goals came in the first half off short-corners. First, Emily set up Serena and then Serena scored again off a pass from Katie Connell. The third goal came off a scramble after the initial shot and Bella popped it into the net. Ally Lawlor recorded the shut-out in this game.

On Saturday morning, the Cavs faced Crofton in very rainy conditions. It was an excellent game with Collingwood controlling slightly more of the action. The Cavs had a number of good chances off their short-corners but could not finish them. Ally was once again in net and she made a number of good saves to keep the score 0-0.

After regulation time was up, the teams were put immediately into a penalty shoot-out. For most of the girls, this was their first time in such a situation. Sadly, it was Crofton who moved onto the final.

In the bronze medal game, the Cavs once again played York House. Collingwood quickly built a 3-0 lead with goals from Katie, Serena and Sam Waugh. York House rallied though and scored off a stroke-penalty to make it 3-1. Paige's second goal of the tournament increased the lead to three again. Josie Webb then got in on the action to make it 5-1. There was no quit in the Yorkies as they scored two late goals but it was not enough and the Cavs happily accepted their bronze medals.

Cavs Win ISA Gold

The senior field hockey defeated Shawnigan Lake School 2-1 to repeat as ISA Champions. After easily winning their first three games of the tournament, the Cavs faced their first taste of adversity when they fell behind 0-1 to the Stags. However, the team rallied and played some terrific hockey to bring back the historical Wiggins Cup to Collingwood for the second straight year.

Collingwood opened the tournament with a 8-0 win over Brentwood. Maddy Augustus and Seli Edstrand each scored a hat-trick. Lilah Sawers and Maisie Hastings scored a goal each.

In the second game of the tournament, the Cavs faced York House. Although Collingwood won 5-1, the Yorkies were tougher than the score indicates. Goalie Mo Kelly had to make a couple of top-notch saves while the game was still close. Seli continued her hot-streak as she added her fourth and fifth goals of the day. Maisie added her second of the day and Jamie Borthwick and Kaiden Stanley notched a goal each.

The Cavs finished pool play with a comfortable 5-0 win over Glenlyon-Norfolk. Kaiden led the way with two goals. Seli added another to her total while Liz Mathisen and Bronwyn Bird scored their first goals of the tournament.

The final against Shawnigan was a great reminder that there are good teams waiting to pounce on the two-time BC AA Champion Cavs if they do not play at their best. Although Collingwood took control of the game after falling behind 0-1, they still needed a sprawling goal-line clearance from Gabi Villamil to preserve their narrow 2-1 win. Kaiden scored a goal in each half to provide scoring power to bring home the trophy.

Collingwood now plays in the North Shore AA Final on Monday before moving onto the brand new Vancouver Sea-To-Sky zone championships which take place for the first time ever this Thursday and Friday.

The senior girls' field hockey dynasty just keeps rolling along. The Cavs defeated Windsor 5-0 to win their 12th straight North Shore title. The Cavs have won 11 AA Championships and 1 AAA Championship in the past 12 years.

Although the squad was a tired group after winning the ISA Championships over the weekend, the team still came out hard and quickly established their dominance. Jamie Borthwick and Bronwyn Bird both scored off short-corners and then Jamie set up Jacqui Webb for a terrific tip-in.

In the second half, Lilah Sawers scored and then Jamie added her second of the game. The Cavs will now play in the Vancouver Sea-To-Sky semi-final on Thursday.

Grade 10 Volleyball Cavs Pushing For A Playoff Spot

The Grade 10 volleyball team has two key games this week that will decide whether they make it into the North Shore Playoffs or not. They play Chatelech and West Van in two must-win games. Here is Coach Lee's report on a fine performance at the ISA Championships last weekend:

The Grade 10 Cavs volleyball team had a successful weekend in Victoria at SMUS, placing sixth out of sixteen teams in the ISA's. The girls fought hard to take second in their pool, beating Shawnigan Lake School and Fraser Academy. Closing out Friday night, the girls lost a close one to Southpointe that went to 3 sets.

On Saturday morning, the girls lost a tough game to a strong serving West Point Grey Academy team, but through determination, bounced back to win handily against Brentwood College. This led to the fifth and sixth place game, which had the girls up against a skilled and athletic Southridge squad. The girls never gave up, giving the Storm all they could handle. The game was close, but ended in two straight sets with the girls earning a well-deserved sixth place finish before racing to make the 7pm ferry.

The Cavs will finish off their regular season schedule this week, with a game on Tuesday vs Chatelech and on Thursday vs West Van Secondary. Go Cavs!

Senior Volleyball Ready To Go For ISA's and Zone Playoffs

The senior volleyball team has a couple of big weeks ahead of them. This weekend, they will be playing in the 16-team ISA Championships. The calibre of play at this tournament is excellent so it will be a good test for the squad.

It will also get them ready for the AA Vancouver Sea-To-Sky Zone Championships that they are helping to host in November. St. Thomas Aquinas will be hosting both days but Collingwood has been tapped to help out on Day 1 of this tournament. This means the Cavs will get to play at home, which will be great for the team as they will undoubtedly get lots of fans out.

Here is a report from Coach Jolliffe:

The Senior girls volleyball team has had an eventful season to date. The team has faced adversity with some tough competition in their league games, losing some close matches and fighting hard against their opponents. The team recently defeated Seycove at home with a convincing straight set win.

The team has shown their dedication to improving their skills by attending multiple tournaments including the Douglas College Invitational in which they placed 5th in Tier 2, gaining invaluable experience against some impressive teams.

The girls attended the North Shore Invitational at Handsworth and had some peak performances, testing their growing skills from practice against some high level teams. The highlight of this tournament was defeating the Kodiaks after a challenging evening battling against Tier 1 teams.

With one more league game the team is preparing for the ISEA's tournament at Crofton and is also excited to prepare to host AA Zones in November as a final test of their work and improvement for the 2019-2020 season.

Soccer Cavs Beat Bodwell To Earn Playoff Berth

The senior soccer team went into today's game against the Bodwell Bruins knowing they needed an outright win and a little help from Seycove if they wanted to secure the final position for the North Shore playoffs. The Cavs did their part with a terrific 1-0 win over Bodwell. And Seycove did their part with a 4-2 upset victory over Rockridge. As a result, the Cavs' season is still alive and they will play on Tuesday.

Collingwood got off to a perfect start when Harry Philpotts placed a free kick from 20 metres out perfectly in the left-hand corner of the net. The Bruins' keeper had no chance and barely moved as the ball went by him.

The Cavs' confidence soared with this early goal and the team played an outstanding first half. All the Grade 12's knew it could be their last game and they were men-possessed as they fought to be first to every ball. Collingwood controlled most of the play in the first half but could not get that much needed second goal.

In the second half, the Bruins began to press and their were some tense moments as they fought their way back into the game. With less than ten minutes to go, a defensive breakdown left a Bodwell striker all alone in front of the net. He hammered the ball but DJ Moretto made a brilliant reflex save and the ball was scrambled away by Collingwood defenders. It was an incredible stop and it saved the Cavs' season.

After that, Collingwood settled back down and carried the play for the final five minutes. It was an outstanding display by the entire team but particularly the Grade 12's. DJ, Harry, Sam Howard, Casra Mohammedrezai, Tucker Lake, Blaise Benoit, Massimo Beltramo, Jackson Jessel, Owen Huston, Joey Ficocelli and Archie Robertshaw all played a huge part in the win. And Coach Yeates made sure he got Kourosh Shahbazi and Jasiu Karcz into the game in the final minutes.

The Cavs now await to see if they will play Windsor or Bodwell on Tuesday afternoon at 3:00 at Fen Burdett.

Grade 9 Volleyball Peaking At The Right Time

The Grade 9 volleyball team plays STA in North Shore playoff action next Monday. Based on yesterday's thrilling 5-set loss to Handsworth, the team seems to be peaking at just the right time. Handsworth had not lost more than one set all year in league action, but the Cavs stormed back from a two-set deficit to force a fifth set before finally succumbing to the mighty Royals.

In the first set, Collingwood played tentatively and had issues with Handsworth's strong serving. In the second set, the Cavs began to win some hard-played rallies and their confidence began to grow. In third and fourth sets, everything began to come together. The team covered the court brilliantly, they served well and they were not afraid to go after points aggressively through their hitting. It was a terrific performance.

In the fifth set, Collingwood got out to an early 5-2 lead, but Handsworth turned it up a notch and their excellent play combined with a touch of bad luck for the Cavs was enough to give the Royals the victory. Nevertheless, it was a fantastic match and if this group continues to grow as players, then the future of Collingwood volleyball is very bright.

Three Banners In Seven Days For Field Hockey Cavs

It has been quite the week for the senior field hockey team. Last Saturday, they won the ISA Championships. Then on Monday, they won the North Shore AA Championship. Finally today, they won the inaugural Vancouver Sea To Sky AA Zone Championship with a 5-0 win over Little Flower Academy.

After a somewhat lacklustre semi-final performance against Crofton House yesterday, the Cavs were much sharper today. They opened scoring eight minutes in when Olivia Huebner put a beautiful pass through to Seli Edstrand who deflected it nicely into the net. Bronwyn Bird followed this up six minutes later when she used a 'spin-a-rama' move to create space for herself before she thumped into the goal. Right before halftime, Maddy Augustus got in on the action when she showed deft stick skills herself in scoring a terrific goal.

In the second half, Kaiden Stanley added two goals on fine individual efforts. Mo Kelly recorded yet another shut-out.

The very tired Cavs now have a well-deserved break from games as they prepare for the BC Championships that are being held in Victoria on November 6-8.
