The senior girls' soccer team starts the long run to the BC Championships today. The Cavs finished the regular season tied with STA and Sutherland with identical 5-1 records. However, due to the tie-breaking formula, it was Collingwood that was placed in 3rd place. As a result, the Cavs must win four straight games to earn a berth in the provincial championships. Last year, Collingwood lost the BC AA gold medal match in penalties so they have high hopes to return and win gold this year. Today's game is at 3:00pm at Ambleside Park.

Cavs Win Hatch Shield

Collingwood defeated Rockridge 50-21 today in the 17th annual Hatch Shield match. It was an emphatic victory for the Cavs who took a 7-0 lead less than a minute into the game and never looked back as they raced to a 38-0 halftime lead. Collingwood has now won the last three Hatch Shield games.

Collingwood's early lead came off a Nate Holm intercept. This was quickly followed up by a well-worked try that saw Joey Ficocelli break clean through the Rockridge defence. Nate then scored his second try of the game to make it 21-0 less than ten minutes into the game.

Lucas Okano then made a huge run and just as he was tackled, he off-loaded the ball to Linus Hartner who had worked very hard to support Lucas. Joel Abdel-Barr and Sherven Etemadahari added a try each before halftime. Graeme Neill kicked four conversions in the first half to add eight points to the Collingwood total.

In the second half, the Cavs scored almost right away to make it 45-0 when Lucas Beaupre very smartly dove over a ruck to score. Lucas followed this up with another try to close out the scoring for Collingwood.

Field Hockey Cavs Looking Strong Again

The senior field hockey team took to the field for the first time this year this past weekend at the Polar Bear Tournament. The Cavs were back on the Crofton House pitch where they were crowned BC AA Champions last November. Judging from the results this weekend, the Cavs will be very hard to beat again this year.

Collingwood defeated Kelowna 6-0, Little Flower Academy 4-0, Crofton House 1-0 and York House 5-0. Their only loss would come to defending provincial AAA champion Handsworth.

The coaches would like to give a "huge shout-out to Mo Kelly who was phenomenal in net and stepped up huge during the shootouts and to our four new field players who have definitely enriched our squad".

Collingwood's first league game is this Wednesday against West Van.

The 2019-20 Cavs are looking like one of the best teams at any level in BC field hockey this year.

Dukes Done - Cavs Now Meet Sutherland

It's one down and three to go for the senior girls' soccer team. The Cavs defeated the Windsor Dukes 2-1 today and now move onto play Sutherland on Friday. The winner of that game will play the Burnaby-New Westminster #2 team on Monday. Here is Coach Mulock's report on the exciting win today:

The Cavaliers were excited for their first playoff game of the season and were hungry to get another win over Windsor. The Cavs brought great energy in the first half winning all of the 50/50 balls and playing to feet and keeping possession. Twelve minutes in, McKinley Kennedy gained possession at the half and played a through ball to Tannis McKay up front. Tannis took a touch and shot the ball. The Windsor keeper deflected the ball in the six yard box and Tannis followed the play and capitalized on the second opportunity putting the Cavs up 1-0.

The Cavs continued to work together as team. In the final minutes of the half, McKinley Kennedy won the ball in the centre of the field and played a through ball to Sophia Garofalo. Sophia played a touch forward to Tannis McKay, who with a quick move around the keeper scored her second goal of the game.

Unfortunately, Windsor was able to take advantage on a corner kick to bring the final score to 2-1 for the Cavs. Rachel Grahame and Riley Kennedy played strong defensively, which kept Windsor's attack at bay. Kayleigh Garland and Mo Kelly also played well in net for the Cavs.

Coaches are proud of the team and the effort they showed today and look forward to the next game against Sutherland on Friday, May 10th at 3:00pm.

Tannis McKay scored both goals for the Cavs today.

Bella Parker has been a force for the Cavs this season.

Soccer Cavs Ready For League Opener On Thursday

The senior boys' soccer team kicks off North Shore league play this Thursday against Rockridge. Coach Yeates' veteran squad has prepared for this with four tough exhibition games.

The Cavs travelled last weekend to the island for matches against St. Michaels University School (SMUS) and Brentwood College. Although the Cavs lost both games, the two-day trip was a big success as Coach Yeates gave everyone a chance to 'strut their stuff'. Even more importantly, it was a great bonding experience for all the players.

This past week, Collingwood faced Sentinel and Windsor in North Shore exhibition games. The Cavs defeated the Spartans 2-1 on Tuesday. David Howard opened the scoring with a blast from just inside the 18-yard box. It was a very well-taken goal after Casra Mohammedrezai fed David a short pass.

A defensive miscue allowed Sentinel to tie the game up literally a minute later, but Collingwood stormed right back. Older brother Sam Howard got into the action with a stunning blast that ricocheted off the cross-bar and into the net. It was a brilliant strike.

On Thursday, the Cavs defeated Windsor 2-0. The game was tied 0-0 at half. Collingwood opened the scoring early in the second half when Sam put a beautiful cross into the box that Thomas Foote hammered into the net with his head. David followed this up with another terrific goal as he picked the corner giving the Dukes' goalie no chance.

The team is looking forward to their opening game against Rockridge. The Ravens have some outstanding players so it should be an exciting match.

In a brilliant tactical manoeuvre, Coach Yeates has moved Blaise Benoit from the midfield into the back four. The back four is now more solid than ever as Blaise's game sense and speed have been on constant display.

Killer B's Win UBC Bronze

Collingwood sometimes has so many good field hockey players the decision is made to field a second senior team. Historically, this team is known as the "Killer B's". This year's version of the Killer B's was entered in the UBC Tier 2 tournament this past Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Here is Coach Allan's report on a team with absolutely no quit in them:

The Senior Blue Field Hockey Team won Bronze in the Tier 2 division of the UBC tournament this weekend. This was an outstanding accomplishment for several reasons.

Thursday and Friday the team had a full roster, but struggled through pool games, suffering some discouraging losses and ending up playing in the Bronze match on Saturday morning. Due to injuries, illness, and other reasons, the team was severely reduced in number.

Nine girls, two short of a full team, took the pitch on Saturday morning, against a Crofton team with a full bench. Playing without a goalie, and a bit unsure, but largely positive, the girls finished the first half tied at 0-0. That sparked hope and the team played a strong second half, helped by a few lucky bounces and good positioning. The final whistle blew with the game still tied at zero.

Having no goalie, Skyler Edstrand, fearless and rock-solid, stepped in to defend during shootouts. With goals scored by Lola Bosa, Saylor Sprenger, and the aforementioned Skyler, the first round of shootouts finished tied 3-3. Sudden death shootouts followed. Lola scored again as the first shooter, Crofton answered, and neither of the second shooters scored. Saylor scored next and Skyler successfully defended the third Crofton shooter, ending the game with an astounding 5-4 Collingwood victory.

Even more important than the win, was the lesson. As Coach French put so eloquently, it was about coming out, playing with heart, and having a positive attitude. And of course, keep it classy.

Coaches French, Allan, and Davis want to thank the girls for their amazing effort, and the entire team for their efforts during the tournament and the season so far.

Soccer Cavs Rally For Win Over Mulgrave

$

When the senior soccer team fell behind 2-0 to Mulgrave this afternoon things looked bleak. However, Coach Yeates was cool and calm in his halftime talk. He made some technical adjustments and the Cavs roared back to tie the game 2-2 before winning it in penalties.

Collingwood had far more possession in the first half but it was the Titans that took advantage of their opportunities. Their first goal came on a speculative cross from the left-wing that somehow curved into the far right-hand corner. Their second goal came off a corner-kick. When the ball landed, it seemed six Collingwood defenders looked at each other but no one moved. The Mulgrave striker didn't need a second invitation and it was smashed into the back of the net for the 2-0 lead.

The Cavs came out of halftime with renewed vigour. Archie Robertshaw had been brought on at halftime by Coach Yeates. When he was put through with a nice pass, he took his chance perfectly and stroked the ball into the lower left-hand corner and it was 2-1.

Collingwood continued to put on pressure and it was not long before DJ Moretto hammered the ball past the Titans' goalie to make it 2-2. The Cavs continued to press and they were very unlucky when an absolute cannonball off the foot of Tucker Lake smashed off the crossbar and straight down into the hands of the very fortunate keeper.

Regulation time came to an end with a brave diving save by Ryan Yacoub. An obvious trip was somehow missed by the referee and it looked like Mulgrave might win it in the waning seconds, but Ryan was quick off his line and courageously smothered the ball.

Collingwood only needed four shooters in the shootout as all four were perfect and the Titans missed their first penalty and Ryan dove to save their third attempt. Tucker Lake, Blaise Benoit, Arthur Na and Sam Howard all gave the Mulgrave keeper no chance with well-placed powerful shots.

Arthur Na scored Collingwood's third penalty today and was solid throughout the game on the left flank.

David Howard was a ball of energy all game long and created a number of good opportunities for his teammates.

Parent Conference 2019

October 30, 2019 9:00am
Darlene S Howard Theatre, Morven Campus

Join Marg Thorsborne, a world leader in Restorative Practises to learn about the most effective ways to develop our young people into thoughtful, caring, empathic, and kind kids who have a strong sense of self worth and integrity. How can we build into the way we raise them, the skills to manage the difficult moments in their own lives?

This workshop is designed to help parents understand what contributes to the relational climate at home, and the influence we can have, as adults, on the emotional "temperature". There will be plenty of moments when things go wrong (as they do all families) and that climate becomes too hot or too cold, and sometimes the fallout can become unbearable.

There are limited spaces for both events. To avoid disappointment, please be sure to register early.
Registration opens here on Thursday, October 3rd, at 9:00am.

Evening Session- October 30, 2019. 7:00-8:30pm

Lecture Theatre, Morven Campus

For those of you who are unable to join us for Parent Conference, Marg Thorsborne will be hosting an evening session geared towards parenting teens. Being a conflict-competent adult is going to be a useful skill-set to have in these circumstances, but these skills do not necessarily come naturally or easily to us, depending on our own upbringing. Our children will always make mistakes and make poor decisions, so how do we use these opportunities to build responsibility for what's occurred and how can we hold them accountable for these mistakes in these instances? How does the loss of trust get repaired?

These questions and others will be covered in the following topics:

1. What makes a solid, healthy relationship with our children work?

2. What do young people say that they need from the adults in their lives?

3. What are more effective ways of understanding and responding to behaviours that are problematic?

4. What can we do that relies less on punishment and rewards, and uses more effective approaches in holding each other accountable?

Junior Field Hockey Soars Over Seycove

The junior field hockey team defeated the Seycove Seahawks 3-1 on Monday. The squad had played five tough games at the UBC Tournament last week so they well prepared for anything the Deep Cove squad could throw at them. Here is Coach Mulock's game report:

The Junior Girls Field hockey team played their first regular season game Monday afternoon against Seycove Secondary School. The team was excited for their first league game of the season and were fresh off a successful weekend at UBC for their annual tournament.

Katie Connell, Paige Brossard and Samantha Waugh scored for the Cavs and Nina Winckler and Olivia Okano held the Seycove squad to one goal. The team was proud with their first win of the season and are looking forward to their next game against Handsworth on Oct 7th at 3:30pm at William Griffin.

Kelly Layden has played well for both the Senior Killer B's and the junior squad so far this year.

Paige Brossard scored for the Cavs in their win over Seycove.

Coach Mulock moved Serena Zhu from the back three up to the forward line for the Seycove game and Serena responded with some fantastic offensive runs.
