Connell And The Cavs Tame Cougars and Huskies On Day 1 Of BC Championships

Maddie Connell scored 7 goals as the senior field hockey team romped to two easy victories on Day 1 of the BC Championships. The Cavs opened with an eight-goal outburst against the Enver Creek Cougars. They then decided that "Eight Was Not Enough" and defeated the OKM Huskies 9-0.

It only took 90 seconds for the Cavs to take the lead in the morning game against Enver Creek. Maddie smashed a ball past the Cougar's keeper off a short corner. Two minutes later, Holly Robertshaw scored off a deft deflection. Sofia Ludwig then blasted a ball into the back of the net and the rout was on. Liz McMullin and Tiana Wong added goals before halftime.

In the second half, Maddie, Holly and Tiana all scored their second goal of the game.

In the second game against OKM, it was a case of Maddie being simply too dominant for the Huskies to handle. She scored at the 4, 6, 20 and 25 minute mark to give the Cavs a 4-0 lead. Rachel Graham joined the fun just before halftime to give Collingwood a 5-0 lead.

In the second half, Tiana scored a great goal off a set-play that saw Maddie feed Jaimie Chrystal who then slid it over to Tiana for an easy tap-in. Tiana popped another goal in two minutes later. Jaimie added a goal of her own before Maddie scored her 7th of the day.

Maddie Connell was a goal-scoring machine on Day 1 of the BC Championships.

Enduro riders cap season in first
Whistlerites thrilled to take national championships

by Dan Falloon

Source: Pique News Magazine

Evan Mant's first year as an enduro rider, by all metrics, went better than he could have expected.

When you're a national champion, that's what happens.

The North Vancouver product, who has lived and worked in Whistler the past two summers, claimed the under-21 title in the first-ever Canadian National Enduro Championships series. The series was made up of races in Rossland, Mont-Ste. Anne, Revelstoke and Sun Peaks, often doubling with B.C. Enduro Series competition.

"It means a lot. I came into the season hoping I might end up top-three in B.C. and taking the overall for the Canadian series was pretty crazy. It was my first season racing and it was totally unreal," he said.

Mant started the B.C. Enduro season strong with a win on familiar terrain in North Vancouver, but was truly challenged as the season went on when he was forced to tackle some new ground. After being forced to learn how best to ride, he finished the season strong with wins at the final two races to cement the title.

"I had a lot of confidence going into the next few races. I didn't do quite as well as that in the middle of the season," he said. "I was learning how to pre-ride stages, a bunch of the aspects of racing you've got to learn and then I put it all together for the last couple."

Mant has a cross-country background, and though he certainly enjoys it, was glad he made the decision to try out enduro this year and enjoy a little more success than he had previously.

"It's not like I've been really competitive in XC and I've never raced downhill, so it was just kind of natural. I just wanted to try it out, see how I did," Mant said. "I'll definitely race enduro next year and I'll again probably focus on it, but I'll do some more XC races, probably.

"I like XC. It's more intense than enduro. Enduro is pretty relaxed."

The senior field hockey team is off to the BC AA semi-finals. The Cavs defeated the the J L Crowe Hawks 7-0 and the South Okanagan Hornets 6-0 to advance to the medal round. Collingwood will now play at 10:15am tomorrow for a shot at defending their provincial title.

In this morning's game, the Cavs opened the scoring in spectacular fashion. A driving run by Maddie Connell set up a Rachel Graham sweep that was deflected mid-air by Sofia Ludwig. This will definitely go down as one of the prettiest goals of the whole tournament.

A minute later Holly Robertshaw doubled the lead and the Cavs were off to the races. Bronwyn Bird knocked in a rebound after a short corner to make it 3-0. Chloe Szybunka scored in exactly the same fashion to make it 4-0 at halftime.

Holly scored her second goal of the game a minute into the second half after a determined run by Maddie set her up. Megan 'Dabber' Mauro then scored off a short corner on a terrific shot. Kaya Brossard set up the final goal of the game with a great run. Bronwyn was the recipient of the pass and poked home her second of the day.

In the SOSS game, Maddie opened the scoring with a real blast off a short corner. Rachel Graham then scored after Lauren Alderson had dug the ball out after a save by the SOSS keeper on a short corner. Nisha Mainra scored a beauty when she knocked in a mid-air pass from Meg Mauro. Maddie scored the 4th goal of the half on a piece of stick-handling genius that left the SOSS goalie sprawled in disbelief on the ground.

Maddie and Sofia scored in the second half to give the Cavs the 6-0 victory. Coaches Gold, Underwood and Bruner are incredibly pleased with the play of their team. After a long scoring drought throughout the latter part of the season, the team has now regained their confidence after the first two days of the BC Championships. Tomorrow's games will be difficult, but the team is playing great and will be confident as they go looking for a second successive gold medal.

Nisha Mainra scored a terrific goal on a deflection that displayed her fantastic eye-hand coordination.

Bruins Bounced - Cavs Win Volleyball Final

The senior girls volleyball team defeated the Bodwell Bruins yesterday to win the Division 1 title. This is a great accomplishment for the team who swept the Bruins - 25-9, 25-13, 25-21. The coaches were thrilled with the team's performance last night. As Coach Morris stated, "The final point was just amazing. Kate passing to Maddie who put it up perfectly for Hazel who hit it so hard there's a dent in the new gym floor". The coaches would also like to thank all the fans who came out, especially the Cavalier – Parinaz Mahmoudi. Here is Coach Lee's report:

The Senior Girls Volleyball team capped off their North Shore season by winning the championship. With a large crowd of supporters on hand, the girls beat Bodwell 3-0 in the final game of the season. The Cavs were the dominant team early on and imposed their strong offensive attack on their opponents.

The Bruins had no answer for the Cavs. The team never looked to be in trouble throughout the game. Hazel once again showed that she is one of the strongest hitters on the North Shore. Kate controlled the game with her passing and hitting. Maddie spread around the play and was able to find her sets found the other team mates with amazing accuracy. Julia and Ann kept the opponents baffled with their quick hits and blocks. Daisy was a defensive dynamo making great passes as well.

This game was the culmination of a great season for the volleyball team. They ended the season undefeated, they placed 3rd in the ISA tournament and winning the Div.1 championship. The team now waits to see if they get a berth into the Lower Mainland tournament.

Kate Phillips goes high to win the Cavs a point.

Barbara Delgado makes a pass to Kate.

Dalton Brilliant But Cavs Have To Settle For Silver

Yesterday at the BC Field Hockey Championships, Natalie Dalton proved once again why she's considered one of the best young goalkeepers in Canada. Nat was absolutely outstanding as she led the Cavs into the final and then kept them in it with a series of amazing saves. However, not even Nat can save everything and Crofton took advantage of a defensive breakdown to score late in the game to defeat Collingwood 1-0.

In the morning semi-final, Collingwood defeated SMUS in a thrilling game that went to penalty shots. The Cavs were the better team for most of the game but had to come from behind twice in order to force shots.

Collingwood took a 1-0 lead seven minutes into the game. Rachel Graham pounced on a rebound from a Jaimie Chrystal shot. However a minute later, the game was tied 1-1 as SMUS superstar and full national team member, Anna Mollenhauer, blasted a short corner shot past Nat. This was to become a bad deja vu for the Cavs as all three SMUS goals would come off short corners.

With the Blue Jags leading 2-1, the Cavs mounted a ferocious attack late in the first half. After forcing five short corners in a row, Holly Robertshaw scored to tie the game with no time left on the clock.

You would have thought that Collingwood would have all the momentum going into the second half, but it was SMUS who scored first. Once again the Cavs were chasing the game, but at the 16-minute mark, Tiana Wong pounced on a rebound off a short corner and tied the game once again.

When the game went into penalties, it was clear that it was advantage Collingwood. Nat is so agile and aggressive that opposition shooters can rarely beat her. And that is exactly what happened. Maddie Connell, Holly and Jaimie all scored while the first two SMUS players did not. With the game on the line, not even Anna Mollenhauer could beat Nat and the Cavs were off to the final.

The final was an exciting affair, but Crofton was the better team for most of the game. Collingwood had two great opportunities early in the first half, but rarely penetrated the D and could not force any short corner opportunities. 13 minutes into the game, the Cavs were in full defensive scramble when a penalty stroke was awarded to CHS. The shooter picked the left corner but Nat made a brilliant diving save to keep the game tied.

In the second half, the Cavs pushed hard. Maddie attacked relentlessly but the CHS double teams were even too much for her. The long-ball attack almost paid dividends a couple of times but in the end, the Cavs did not force one short corner in the second half.

With two minutes left in the game, Collingwood gave too much room to a CHS striker. Before they could shut her down, she took the D and hammered a shot by Nat. Nat had no chance on this shot and although she was inconsolable after the game, she will hopefully remember that if not for a series of acrobatic saves earlier in the half, the game would have been two or three goals in Crofton's favour.

Collingwood now says goodbye to a terrific group of Grade 12 athletes. Many of them are leaving with 3 provincial medals in their pockets, which is quite a statement. Congratulations to all of them - Lauren Alderson, Thea Bosa, Charlotte Campbell, Maddie Connell, Nat Dalton, Meg Garland, Sophia Ludwig, Nisha Mainra, Holly Robertshaw and Tiana Wong.

Just prior to the final, Coach Gold tries to relax the team with a story about her 'poor singing voice'.

Holly Robertshaw on the attack in the final. Holly has been a goal-scoring machine in her two years at Collingwood.

The future arrived in a big way yesterday. Rachel Graham and Jaimie Chrystal were both brilliant in the mid-field for the Cavs. In the two most important games of the year, both players were terrific.

The agony of defeat. Sophia Ludwig consoles Nat Dalton, while Coach Bruner hugs Tiana Wong. All three players were outstanding in their final games for Collingwood and should be immensely proud of their play yesterday.

Tall Ships Expedition

The Tall Ships students, along with Andrew Field and Jen Hobson, returned from an epic experience aboard the SV Maple Leaf (Oct 20-24). To say this was a trip of a lifetime is definitely a true statement. Yes, they not only saw but had close encounters with stellar sea lions and even numerous humpback whales! They learned about leadership, tying many knots, raising the sails, gasketing the sails and sailing terminology all in the Southern Gulf Islands.

Here are some top highlights from the expedition:

Activities:

  • Going to shore on different islands, eating fresh apples shaken from an apple tree, hiking to a lookout, playing camouflage, investigating abandoned farms, riding in Zodiaks
  • Titanic theme night, completed with characters and historic boarding passes! Hilarious jokes and impromptu dance parties!
  • Eating amazing food prepared by Chef Tom, doing dishes on the deck
  • Carrying out sailing tasks in two watch groups under the friendly supervision of Captain Greg and 1st mate Lindsay.
  • Viewing an amazing starry night sky
  • Learning how to prepare and present amazing meals from the Chef, Tom.

Wildlife:

  • Viewing sea lion rookeries, learning about intertidal life
  • Finding wild sheep on the hillside
  • Seeing harbour porpoises
  • Watching otters play in the water
  • Seeing a huge mother humpback whale and her calf
  • Seeing 10 whales in total so close you could see the tail flukes and hear them surfacing

Sailing:

  • Learning how to raise and douse sails everyday
  • Learning how to 'sweat and tail' the halyards on the main sail, foresail, and staysail
  • Getting to learn to raise and lower the jib sail on the bowsprit
  • Getting to run the ship ourselves and everyone getting a turn at the helm
  • Awesome instruction from Captain Greg and first mate Lindsay

This is an amazing trip where students really get to learn and practice leadership, bond with each other, all while being introduced to our amazing "backyard".

Fearless Foursome Tackles Tough Track At BC Championships

$

Collingwood's top four cross-country runners travelled to Kelowna this past weekend to compete in the BC Championships. It was a tough course with muddy trails and multiple elevation changes. However, it was a beautiful fall day and all our runners had great runs in the Okanagan sun.

In senior boys, Austin Sutherland finished 15th. This is a terrific result for Austin. Casey Lake finished 47th. Considering that there were 222 runners in the field, both boys should be very proud of their accomplishments. Casey will be back next year to lead the boys' team. Coach Ayotte will also be keen to get both Austin and Casey into their spikes for track and field this spring.

In senior girls action, Charlotte Campbell proved once again what a super-woman she is here at Collingwood. On Friday afternoon, Charlotte was playing brilliant defence for our BC silver-medal winning field hockey team. On Saturday, she was running in her fifth straight BC Cross-Country Championship. Charlotte finished 72nd in a field of 223.

Gabrielle Bourgault-Kennaley was our fourth runner. Gabby ran in the junior girls category and finished 95th out of 197. This was an impressive finish for her. Even more impressive is that Gabby has found the time to combine cross-country with her passion for public speaking. A mere two weeks ago, she was representing the school at the World Public Speaking Championships hosted by Collingwood. Proof-positive that you can do it all here at Collingwood.

Casey Lake and Austin Sutherland at the BC's.

Charlotte will compete in three BC Championships this term - Cross-Country, Field Hockey and Swimming

Coach Ayotte is already predicting a very bright future in cross-country and track for Gabby.

The grade 7A volleyball team had an inspiring season. This inspiration came in the form of skill development, team play and communication on the court. The wins were few, but the team spirit was high. The ISEA tournament last week was an excellent experience for the players. Even though we lost both games, we managed to take a set off of Mulgrave which was exciting. They were a pleasure to coach and we hope they continue playing volleyball in the future. Well done, players

Congratulations to 2016 Collingwood Grad, Rachel Spouge, who was named CIS Field Hockey Rookie Of The Year last week. Rachel was the co-captain of Collingwood's senior team for two years and her amazing mid-field play was one of the major reasons that the Cavs won the 2015 BC AA Championship. Rachel has gone on to play at the University of Toronto, one of the top field hockey schools in Canada. Here is the press release from U of T on Rachel's award:

Rachel Spouge, a first-year midfielder from West Vancouver, B.C., won the Joyce Slipp award as the rookie of the year, while Alison Lee and Emma Wingrave were named all-Canadians at the 2016 field hockey all-Canadian awards brunch on Wednesday morning at the Toronto Marriott Bloor Yorkville Hotel.

Spouge became the first Varsity Blue to earn U Sports rookie of the year honours since Amanda Woodcroft in 2011. She has been a focal point of the Blues attack and scored her first career goal in Toronto's 4-3 loss to Guelph on Sept. 24. Defensively, she helped lead Toronto to an OUA-low eight goals against this season.

"Rachel is becoming one of the premier midfielders in OUA," said Varsity Blues head coach John DeSouza. "Her vision, stick skills and work ethic make her an asset on both defence and offence."

Maegan Beres Signs With Boston College

Maegan Beres has had a very exciting fall. Maegan has just returned from the National Women's Hockey U-18 Championships where she helped lead BC to a bronze medal. This was a historic event for the BC team as this was the first time the squad has ever won a medal. Maegan was one of the team captains and played a huge part in the team's success. Maybe even more exciting is that Maegan has also just signed her National Letter of Intent and will attend Boston College next year.

"Maegan has attended Collingwood since Kindergarten and is currently a full time Grade 12 student enrolled at Collingwood School and will graduate from Collingwood upon successful completion of all her subjects and exams this June 2017. In order to further her women's ice hockey goals and aspirations Maegan has attended The North American Hockey Academy (NAHA) based in Stowe Vermont USA for the past 3 winter seasons. NAHA has an elite and proven female hockey program, which combined with a condensed 5 months ice hockey season (October 1 through early March) allows Maegan to play elite hockey for a small portion of the year and return back home to British Columbia to continue and complete each of her Grade 10, 11 and 12 years with Collingwood. Maegan accesses her Collingwood curriculum online, via the Collingwood web portal and correspondence in the case of tests and exams, which are sent by the Collingwood teachers, to and delivered by, the tutors at NAHA. Maegan's academic program is overseen by Collingwood School and her course credits granted by the school in conjunction with the BC Ministry of Education.

The North American Hockey Academy was founded in 1999, is a full boarding hockey & education facility and follows a creative training philosophy that fosters a framework that is both challenging and rewarding, that promotes the growth of each player individually and the team collectively and allows each player the best opportunity to reach her personal goals and excel in the sport they love. The goal is to develop players that are creative, problem-solvers and good decision makers. With on ice practices every day and fitness sessions 5 times / week the training environment improves the skill level while promoting hockey-sense, integrating physical, mental and tactical training for each individual while continuing to develop and expand a strong skill base for each player. The team travels to play in elite tournaments across the US and Canada every weekend averaging 85 games in a condensed season. The program affords the opportunity for girls to compete against the best national and international competition, assisting them to prepare for collegiate competition and potential national team selection. At these highest profile tournaments the NAHA players have the luxury of competing frequently in front of University coaches throughout the season.

Earlier this year Maegan also received an invite to Team Canada's development camp and has been identified as 'one-to-watch' by Hockey Canada ( https://www.hockeycanada.ca/en-ca/news/2016-nwu18c-ones-to-watch )."

Maegan signs her NLI for Boston College. Maegan will be playing Division 1 hockey next year in one of the true hotbeds of American hockey.
