Volleyball Cavs Move Into The Elite Eight

The best volleyball teams in Richmond proved to be no match for the senior volleyball team as they won two out of three matches to march on to Day 2 of the Lower Mainland AA Zone Championships. The Cavs defeated RC Palmer and McNeill to earn a trip to Notre Dame tomorrow morning.

Collingwood opened the tournament with a 2-0 win over RC Palmer. Palmer had one big hitter and scrambled well defensively but the Cavs won the first game 25-19 and the second game 25-15 and notched their first victory without any real problems.

Collingwood's second match was a different matter. The Cavs faced the traditional AA power St. Pat's and the Celtics quickly demonstrated why they were ranked #1 in the pool. Although the Celtics were not a big team, they were skilled and lightning quick around the net. Collingwood had one decent run midway through the first game, but fell 15-25 and 13-25.

This set up a must-win game against McNeill. Collingwood was simply the better team by far in this match. The Cavs posted 25-12 and 25-14 wins.

As usual, it was a team effort for Collingwood. Hazel Atkins delivered some earth-shattering spikes. Kate Phillips was fantastic defensively and her cross-court hitting was outstanding. Julia Petterson contributed some huge blocks at the net at crucial times and was hitting the ball hard. Orchestrating the whole offence was Maddie Filewych, who mixed the attack up beautifully. Finally, Daisy Wang was a real talisman when she served. Literally, every time Daisy served, the Cavs went on a roll.

The team now faces a tough opponent tomorrow at 11:00am as they are playing the #1 team out of the A pool.

Collingwood won two of their three matches tonight to advance in the Zone Championships.

Kate Phillips rises high to win a point for Collingwood against McNeill.

Julia Petterson wins a key point on a block against RC Palmer.

Volleyball Cavs Go Down Swinging

The senior volleyball team played some of its best volleyball of the season but they fell short in their bid to advance to the BC Championships after two straight losses yesterday at the Zone Championships. Entering the day, the Cavs knew that they would have to be at their best and Coach Morris was thrilled that the team did rise to the occasion and play some tremendous volleyball.

Collingwood opened the day with a thrilling 26-24 win over West Point Grey. However, the Wolves regained their composure and came back to win the second and third games to take the match.

This meant that the Cavs needed to defeat Elphinstone to move onto the consolation final to contest the final spot for a backdoor entry into the BC's. Elphinstone had played in the North Shore Premier league all season and has a rich history of success in volleyball. In the end, the Cavs battled incredibly hard and barely lost the first game 25-23. In the second game, they fell 25-18.

Although the team did not advance, Coach Morris was very upbeat: The girls had a great season and every single one of them put in a brilliant effort and should be congratulated on their season. In our team meeting after the game one of the girls said "this was more than just a volleyball team to me, it was a fun, family!"

After yesterday's ISEA Championships, we are all done for the season! We had classic cross country conditions and our athletes did their best to navigate their way through the wet and muddy conditions at Jericho Beach Park. Overall, we were extremely successful in placing in the top half of each race! The highlights were Grade 3 boys, Grade 5 boys and Grade 7 girls placing 5th out of 13 teams. Individually, Katie Lustig (Grade 6) had a fire in her belly to get 3rd place (and Ewan Robertson ran his heart out to get 8th place (out of 113 boys). Congratulations to all of our athletes who competed both at the ISEA's and throughout the season. It has been very exciting to see how much all of our athletes have improved and we really look forward to having them come out in Term 3 for the Track and Field season. Keep up the running everyone!

Swim Team Sends 21 Athletes To BC Championships

The swim team competed last weekend at the BC Championships in Kamloops. Coach Carlbeck has sent in this report on the squad's success this year.

The swim team hit the water for three major meets this year. The first of these was in early October, at the Independent School Meet held at Watermania in Richmond. Collingwood swimmers performed very well and bringing home 5 gold, 5 silver and 4 bronze medals. Overall results saw the team finish 4th overall.

The second major event of the season was in late October, and saw the team competing at the North Shore, New Westminster & Burnaby Zone Championships. Held at UBC, this meet is the qualifier for the Provincial Championships in mid-November. Our goal for this meet was to qualify as many swimmers as possible for Provincials. We achieved that objective with Collingwood swimmers picking up 3 gold, 3 silver and 6 bronze medals. Overall, our swimmers qualified for Provincials in 27 different individual events and 8 relays. Congratulations to the entire team for their contributions to our overall performance which saw us finish in 4th overall.

The season concluded with the BC High School Provincial Championships held at the Canada Games Pool in Kamloops. Preliminary racing on Friday saw solid swimming by the entire team most students exceeding their times from the Zones Championships and 20 out of 21 students making it into at least one of the final events. Our most successful team finish was the ladies 200 free medley where Bonnie Wang, Nicole Basran, Julia Wood and Avery Kirstriuk finished 5th. The teams combined efforts resulted in Collingwood finishing 31st out of 93 teams.

The team enjoys a stop in BC's winter wonderland on their way to the provincial championships in Kamloops.

Cavs Send Colts Back To the Corral

The senior girls' basketball team was so keen to have a game on the opening night of basketball season that they were willing to travel all the way to Richmond to get an exhibition game. Here is the game report from Coach McLaughlin:

The senior girls headed out to Richmond to play the Colts in their season open. Richmond was excited to host us and had the gym fully decorated to support the home team. But the spotlight, announcers, and 20 cheerleaders did not intimidate the Cavs.

The Cavs were able to push the ball and get open shots, but the bouncy rims limited the scores, and after Richmond hit a couple lucky threes, the score was tied going into the second. In the second all players saw lots of court time as several of the players were in foul trouble. The lowlight of the second was the fire alarm that put the game on pause for a while.

However, it also allowed the Cavs time to regroup and come out strong, pulling away by more and more each quarter until the game was sealed and the Cavs left the court victorious 61-48. All players played with confidence and took their shots, the ball was moved well and many players surprised themselves with some impressive moves!! The senior girls open their season at home vs mission secondary at 7pm on Wednesday.

Nikki Sutton-MacGregor (12) and Tiana Wong (13) both started last year in Grade 11. Coach McLaughlin is expecting big things from them this year.

    Wong's Wisdom Whacks Windsor

After winning the BC AA Championships last year, Coach Andy Wong finds himself with a young and inexperienced team to start this season. However, Coach Wong is renowned for his calm demeanour and ability to get the most out of players. Yesterday in the home opener, Coach Wong proved once again that his coaching wizardry will go a long way in taking the Cavs to another successful season. Here is his game report:

The Cavaliers (1-0) held off a feisty Windsor Dukes team to win their home opener 76-74. Both teams were plagued by fouls and turnovers in the first half. The Cavs had an abysmal 20 turnovers in the first half alone.

After a scrappy first quarter, the Cavs trailed 19-18. Brodie Jacobs scored 7 of his game high 24 points to take a 43-39 lead into the half. The Cavs built an 11 point lead in the third quarter, but were unable to hold off Windsor's aggressive guards.

Samir Damji had a key steal at the end of the fourth quarter, one of his seven steals on the night. He was quickly fouled, and scored both free throws to extend the lead 76-71. Windsor came back to hit a 25 foot three pointer at the buzzer to the crowd's chagrin.

Alec Coleman was tenacious in his senior debut, scoring 10 points, including shooting 7/8 for the free throw line, and adding 7 rebounds. Max McKee finished with 11 points, and Kane Vidalin had 9. The Cavs are playing back to back home games to kick off the season, and host a very competitive AAAA Sentinel team at 7:30pm (Nov 29).

Jake Smith and Max McKee were role players last year. This season Coach Wong is counting on them to step up and play big minutes.

    Grade 10 Girls Defeat Chatelech

The Grade 10 girls' basketball team got their season off to a solid start win a one-sided victory over Chatelech. Sadly, the Eagles were not nearly as good as they usually are and the Cavs ran away with the game and were not really challenged at all. Here is Coach Button's report:

The junior girls' basketball team kicked off their season with a win against Chatelech on their home court. The girls shook off the nerves in the first quarter and played well as a team. The girls are excited for the Cav Classic coming up this weekend and playing against some much tougher opposition.

Rachel Graham ripped it up on the field hockey pitch for the senior girls' team. Now Coach Button is ready for her to do the same thing on the court.

Roadrunners No Match For Wily CAV-otes

The senior girls' basketball team has stormed to a 2-0 record this season. On Wednesday night, the Cavs defeated the Mission Roadrunners. Here is Coach McLaughlin's report:

It is not too often the Collingwood gets to face competition from the Valley until well into playoff season, however, Wednesday night Collingwood played host to the Mission Secondary Roadrunners. Mission Secondary has a strong history of producing talented basketball players, having many of them heading to play university basketball. So, when the Roadrunners came to the Cavs home court, Coach McLaughlin wasn't sure what to expect.

The first quarter started a bit slow, with the teams feeling each other out, trading baskets: the Cavs were getting good looks, but hitting everything but the bottom the net - the quarter ended with the Cavs narrowly ahead 14-9.

The second quarter, the Cavs found their rhythm with their defense creating turnovers, and the Cavs being able to convert in the open court. The ball movement improved, allowing the Cavs to get the ball inside both with drives and passes and they were able to push the score to enter half time 31-14. The second half saw the Cavs continuing to hold their momentum, allowing all the Cavs to see court time, as Coach McLaughlin tried different defenses and player combinations. At the final buzzer, the Cavs were victorious 51-30.

All the players filled their roles and many stepped up showing their abilities. Alexa Bossley was stellar on defense, stealing the ball on multiple occasions. Tiana Wong, Isabelle Gaglardi-Kreider, and Amanda Finnie were all strong distributing the ball. Jacqui Kelly surprised the crowd, coach and even herself with some amazing drives to the basket. Savin Narwal was excellent under the basket, and Bridget Campbell and Suha Cho found their "baller-ness". Nikki Sutton-Macgregor and Kayleigh Garland were once again warriors inside grabbing rebounds and finishing at the hoop.

This weekend the Senior Lady Cavs head into the ISA championships hosted by Crofton House.

Cavs on Their Way To Championship Games In The Classic

Both the Grade 10 Boys and Girls' teams have fought their way into the Championship Game in the Cav Classic. This is the first time that Collingwood has hosted a co-ed tournament at the Grade 10 level. So far the tournament has been a huge success and has attracted quality teams from the North Shore, Lower Mainland, Fraser Valley and the Okanagan.

The girls' team earned their berth in the final with an easy victory over Burnaby Mountain and a hard-earned win over Hugh Boyd from Richmond. The Cavs will now play at 12:00 tomorrow.

The boys' team scored early and often against West Point Grey Academy as the Cavs raced to a huge first-half lead. This allowed Coach Ditson to make full use of his bench.

Collingwood faced Okanagan-Mission School from Kelowna in the semi-final. As Grade 9's, the team had played OKM in the BC Championships and had come away with a 4-point victory. Nine months later, the two teams were once again equally matched and traded the lead back and forth numerous times. In the end, the Cavs were triumphant by 4 points again. The boys will now play at 1:30 tomorrow.

TimberWolves Prove Too Much For The Cavs

The Grade 10 girls' basketball team battled hard but fell to the Robert Bateman Timberwolves in the Grade 10 Girls Cav Classic Final on Saturday. Collingwood faced a formidable opponent in Bateman as the Timberwolves won the Grade 9 BC Championship last year. In the same event, the Cavs finished 10th. Thus, it seemed like Collingwood was in for a very tough afternoon, especially since star forward Kayleigh Garland was away on senior team duty.

However, despite the apparent mis-match on paper, the Cavs quickly proved that they would not be intimidated. With Muneet Gill running the offence brilliantly from point guard, Collingwood got great looks throughout the first half. Rachel Na, Sarah Gerber, Rachel Graham and Brooke Lucke all took advantage of terrific cuts to the basket to get easy buckets. The Cavs only had seven players dressed for the game so super-subs Izzy Fry and Cindy Lu were constantly pressed into action and both performed tremendously well.

At halftime, the Cavs were down by 10 points, but could have easily been tied if they had made only a fraction more of their lay-up attempts. Coach Button would have been pleased with the effort but would have also been ruing what could have been.

In the second half, the Cavs pushed the Timberwolves hard. Sara drove hard to the basket for a couple of highlight reel hoops and the team's tenacious defence started to shut down Bateman. On two occasions, Collingwood cut the lead to 6 points. In the end, the Timberwolves strong inside game proved to be too much for the Cavs. Nevertheless, Coach Button came away with the strong belief that this team has the strength to once again push everyone in the North Shore league.

Muneet Gill was outstanding throughout the Cav Classic. Her terrific play on Saturday kept the Cavs in the game against a powerful Robert Bateman squad.

Grade 10 Cavs All Class In Home Tournament Win

The Grade 10 boys defeated New West in the final of the Cav Classic on Saturday afternoon. This was a tremendous victory for the team. Coach Ditson was justifiably elated after the game. His young team has suffered through some early season injury troubles, but instead of feeling sorry for themselves, they have battled on and seen multiple players step up to help secure wins. Here is Coach Yoon's game report:

It was championship Saturday as the Junior Boys' basketball team defeated New Westminster 50-43 to claim first place in the Cav Classic tournament.

After an exciting victory on Friday against Okanagan-Mission, the Junior Cavs carried a lot of momentum into the championship game. The team came out very aggressively to start the contest by pressing early and playing solid team defense. Tariq Alibhai was tremendous on the defensive end by getting into the passing lanes while Tommy LeBlanc grabbed key rebounds to help keep the lead for the Cavs. The Cavs also got strong play from both Imraan and Aleem Karmali. The twins continued to hit key 3 pointers to help the Cavs build a 33-19 halftime lead.

Imraan Karmali finished the game with a team-high 23 points and was key during the late stages of the game with New Westminster pushing for a comeback. New Westminster was able to close the gap by 6 points, but it wasn't enough as the Cavs held on for the win. The coaches would like to congratulate Tariq, Aleem, and Imraan for winning the "Player of the Game" awards throughout the tournament.

Coach Ditson, Coach Payne, and Coach Yoon would also like to thank all the parents and student volunteers for their help in organizing this year's Cavs Classic. The Junior Boys play next in the Carney Classic tournament from Dec 9-10.

Brentwood Beatdown Still A Positive Experience For Cavs

    $

The senior boys' basketball team travelled to Brentwood College on the weekend for the ISA Championships. Due to a number of factors the tournament ended up being a four-team affair that included:

Collingwood - 2016 BC AA Champions

SMUS - 2016 BC AA Finalists

Southridge - 2016 BC AAA Champions

Brentwood - 2016 BC Junior Champions

Thus, it was an incredibly tough tournament for the Cavs, especially as they have no returning starters from last year's powerhouse squad. Despite three straight losses, Coach Wong came away with a very optimistic view of the weekend as his team gained a great deal of valuable experience playing some of the best teams in the province. Here is his report:

The Cavaliers (1-4) played in arguably the most competitive field in ISA Senior Boys Basketball history this past weekend. Only four teams competed, all of whom had won a provincial championship in the past two years. In a rematch of last year's AA Provincial Final, the Cavs were outmatched by a veteran group of grade 12's from SMU. The Cavs had the lead for the first eight minutes of the game, but SMU's feisty defense kept the Cavs to a measly eight points in the first half. Down 21-8, the Cavs were not able to find their scoring touch, dropping the game 52-30. Coach Wong was happy with the Cavs intensity on defense, but was rightly concerned about their ability to score.

The Cavs then took the court versus Southridge, the defending AAA Provincial Champions. The team continued to struggle offensively, but were down only six, 42-36, heading into the final frame. After a series of turnover, the Cavs squandered any chances of clawing back, and lost 60-44. In their final match of the round-robin tournament, the Cavs played Brentwood, the reigning Junior Boys Provincial Champions. Brentwood showed why they may have the best class of 2018, pacing themselves to a 95-47 win. Their 1-2-2 and full court man press intimidated the Cavs, who were the victims of turnover after turnover. The Cavs offensive bright spot was Brodie Jacobs, who scored 26 of the 47 points.

The game versus Seaquam was postponed due to weather conditions. The Cavs next game will be at the No Regrets Tournament. The team opens up at 2:15pm on Thursday December 8th against the Charles Hays Rainmakers from Prince George. The game will be in front of the school, and all fans are encouraged to wear white.
