Soccer Cavs Rally To Defeat Sutherland

$

The senior soccer team overcame a two-goal deficit yesterday to defeat Sutherland 3-2 in penalty kicks. This crucial win has pushed the Cavs into a three-way tie for 4th place in the tough North Shore league. Collingwood can break this tie with a win over Seycove this afternoon.

In yesterday's game, the Cavs dug themselves a big hole with an uninspired first-half performance. Collingwood conceded a penalty kick and then had a defensive breakdown that gifted the Sabres their second goal of the day.

Coach Lake had some choice words for his players at halftime. It was a chastened group that took to field to start the second half. Right away, it was clear that the Cavs were not going to lie down and fade away. Nick Somers put a beautiful through ball in behind the Sabres' defence and Brent Anderson made no mistake stroking the ball firmly into the bottom corner. This was Brent's first goal for the senior team and it could not have come at a better time.

With time running out, the Cavs were still trailing 2-1. With the referee announcing there was only 30 seconds to play, Jack Mathisen took a corner kick. The Sabres goalie watched it sail over his head and then watched in disbelief as Imraan Karmali hammered it into the net.

Collingwood always goes into penalty shoot-outs with great confidence as they feel goalie Tariq Alibhai will always rise to the occasion. As Coach Waterhouse stated, "I'll take Tariq over any other goalie in the league in a shootout". Sure enough, Tariq saved two Sutherland penalties. Derek Punter, Adam Lewis, Duncan Bustos and Brent Anderson all scored to give the Cavs the big victory.

Imraan Karmali scored in the last minute of play to send the game to penalty kicks.

The Grade 9 volleyball team defeated Sentinel 3-1 earlier this week. This was an important win for the squad. The Cavs played with confidence, which definitely made a difference on their serve reception and defence.

The entire team served very well. Sophie Ehinger had a particularly good match as Sentinel struggled to return her short serves. Ivy Zhu was excellent at the net. She blocked a couple of solid attacks by the Spartans and scored a number of crucial points on spikes.

When the senior volleyball team found themselves down 22-16 in the first game to the Sentinel, it did not look like they were about to whitewash their local rivals. However, Hazel Atkins stepped up and then served the game out as the Cavs scored nine straight points to stun the Spartans.

Hazel's heroics sparked Collingwood to a 3-0 victory. The Cavs won the second game 25-19 before closing out the match with a 25-20 win. Although the Cavs did not play well in the opening game, they had held their composure and made their move at just the right time.

The entire team played well. Taylor Danzig was praised by the coaching staff for her outstanding blocking. Daisy Wang was once again lethal with serve. Neeki Alavi was also terrific with her serve.

The team now heads down to Washington for a weekend of volleyball. They will play a local high school and then watch the UW Huskies in action. This promises to be a great trip for the squad.

Field Hockey Cavs Prepare For North Shore Final

With the North Shore AA Championship game this coming Monday, the senior field hockey team has taken extraordinary steps to seek out competition to get them ready to defend their North Shore and BC titles. The team rented turf time in Surrey so they can play two exhibition games against top-notch AAA teams. This will also give the Cavs a chance to acquaint themselves with the Tamanawis Fields where the BC Championships take place this year.

With the UBC Tournament being cancelled last week due to inclement weather, Collingwood was able to set up games against South Delta And Kelowna. Both these teams were also entered in the UBC Tournament.

The Cavs defeated South Delta 1-0 yesterday in a thrilling game. In an attempt to solve their recent scoring drought, the team was trying a new system. While it did not lead to an immediate deluge of goals, the coaches were very happy with the team, especially since they were moving the ball around so beautifully.

Nisha Mainra scored Collingwood's lone goal. In a practice shoot-out that followed, Maddie Connell and Holly Robertshaw both scored to give the Cavs a 2-0 win. Nat Dalton recorded a shut-out in both the game and the shoot-out and continues to give Collingwood absolutely incredible goaltending.

The Cavs will face Windsor on Monday at 3:00pm at Rutledge in the North Shore Final.

Collingwood Peaking At The Right Time For Cross-Country Championships

The cross-country team will compete in the Zone Championships on Wednesday. Collingwood will be sending 23 athletes to this event. This is a new record for the team and the coaches are confident that a number of these runners will qualify for the BC Championships. Here is Coach Ayotte's report on last week's races:

The cross-country team had their last league meet on Thursday, October 20th at Loutet Park in North Vancouver. The weather looked a bit precarious at first but the rain managed to stay away and we even saw a little bit of sunshine!

The senior girls had their best team performance yet. Overall, Meghan Garland, Charlotte Campbell, Morgan Border and Tiana Wong placed an impressive 3rd as a team! Meghan and Charlotte were both in the top ten and Morgan in the top 20 with welcome-addition Tiana Wong not too far behind. This race means these girls have a very strong chance of making provincials as a team!

In the senior boys category we were down a few key runners due to some injuries (though these runners will be ready for zones). Austin Sutherland was fourth overall in a VERY tight race with Casey Lake not far behind at 11th. Jaedon Chase looked very fit with a lot of gas in the tank at the end (meaning he can run even faster next week) and Jack Mathisen finished his race despite some very sore calves from soccer.

The bantam boys category was very impressive in numbers and all five boys raced very well. Kai O'Krane led the way with Victor Qu, Kolbing Winkler, Jack Bradecamp and Sam Fuller not far behind. Zaref Anderson looks stronger every race and had a great run in the juvenile boys race.

Liz Mathisen and Amelia Bradecamp both ran as hard as they could in the bantam girls category but the two field hockey games the girls had already played that day meant they were a little bit tired. They still ran, despite being exhausted, and the coaches were very proud of their races.

The team will be travelling to Squamish for the North Shores on Wednesday, October 26th. The last race of the year will be at Provincials on Saturday, November 5th in Kelowna.

Kai O'Krane was Collingwood's top Grade 8 boy in the race at Loutet.

Casey Lake, Austin Sutherland and Charlotte Campbell have been leading the way all year for our senior team.

The senior volleyball team spent the past weekend in Seattle. This terrific initiative was put together by Coaches Morris, Lee and Garib. By all accounts, it was a fantastic trip. Here is a report from Coach Morris:

The Senior Volleyball Team is on a high after a wonderful weekend down in Washington.

Playing volleyball against both the Lindbergh Junior Varsity and Varsity teams was an exciting experience. Our team was small in numbers but played some of the best volleyball as a team so far this season! Casey was on Fire in the middle! Barbara, the libero, served up some incredible aces! Maddie, one of our captains, controlled the court and kept the opposition guessing by throwing out some incredible sets! Daisy served hard, set and hit with great passion! Avin played great defense and brought her consistent tricky serves.

Elle, our photographer extraordinaire, played smart with some impressive roll shots and passing! Hazel played aggressively and had her impressive jump serves and kills! And Kate putting on a passing clinic and showed smart placement on all of her kills!

Some other highlights of the trip were: watching the University of Seattle practice, passing, passing, passing. Watching them play the next day against the University of New Mexico, WOW! Eagle Bait! Watching Lindbergh's Homecoming football game. Meeting new friends from the Lindbergh Volleyball team. '5 in 5' and the team presentations'. Interesting DJ's and the music choices on the bus. 'G' the navigator extraordinaire. Milkshakes at Lunch Box Laboratory. Pike Place Market. Overall there were lots of experiences, smiles, laughter and memories!

The Cavs celebrate after winning a point.

One of the trip highlights was the team's visit to the University of Washington. The girls had a great time wandering the Huskies' amazing campus.

No trip to Seattle is complete without a trip to Pike Place Market.

Holly's Hat-Trick Leads Cavs To 9th Straight Title

Holly Robertshaw scored a hat-trick to lead the senior field hockey team to their ninth straight North Shore Championship. Collingwood's field hockey program has dominated the North Shore AA division for almost a decade now as they have won eight AA championships and one AAA championship in the past nine years.

The Cavs defeated Windsor 5-0 in today's game. The game was actually much closer than the score would indicate. Windsor's goalie was sensational and the Dukes fought gamely until the Cavs broke it completely open with three goals in the last five minutes.

Early in the first half, it appeared that Collingwood was on their to a 'cakewalk'. A brilliant give and go between Holly and Rachel Graham put the Cavs up 1-0 at the six minute mark. This was a particularly great piece of teamwork as Holly put Rachel in on the Windsor goalie. As the goalie and the last defender slid across to Rachel, she calmly passed it back to Holly for a fabulous tap-in goal.

The Cavs would not score again though until the 14-minute mark of the second half. After a series of short corners were saved by the Windsor keeper, Maddie Connell blasted a shot off the post and the ball bounced off the goalie's heel and into the net. It was a tough break for a goaltender who had been brilliant all afternoon.

It appeared that the Cavs might not get another goal to truly put their fans at ease. However, Holly scored her second goal of the day off a wild goalmouth scramble and then Sofia Ludwig followed that up almost immediately with a goal of her own. On the final play of the game, Holly completed her hat-trick as she was allowed to run in alone on the keeper.

Collingwood will now turn their attention to their final preparation for defending their BC Championship. The BC's run November 2-4 in Surrey.

Grade 9 Girls Off To Volleyball Playoffs

The Grade 9 volleyball team has had a busy week. They defeated Rockridge in league play to earn a berth in the North Shore playoffs. They also competed in the ISA tournament at Meadowridge. Here is Coach Lussier's report:

The ISA Championships turned out to be a very tiring day as only eight players could make it that day. The girls played well despite played a lot of volleyball in a very short period of time. We managed to qualify for the semis and even managed to take our last game to a third set against the Spartans, who had destroyed us in Game 1 of the tournament. Coaches are very happy with their mighty 8! Charlotte Anderson, Hana Salehi, Ivy Zhu, Alicia Ranahan, Claire Conover, Dahlia M. Wong, Jessica McDougall and Melissa Balun.

In the last league game of the year, the team had to beat Rockridge to qualify for the playoffs. We won the tough match in 5 sets. Highlights of the game: Hana Salehi played excellent defence and was able to save a few very important balls for us. Setter Charlotte Anderson created good offensive opportunities for our forwards throughout the game. Alicia Ranahan also played a great game at the net as well as on the back row. She managed to put Rockridge in trouble many times by placing the ball well in their court.

Zone Championships Turn Into Tough Mudder For Runners

The cross-country team headed up to Squamish yesterday for the Zone Championships. Unfortunately, the weather was completely uncooperative and the constant pouring rain turned the course into a muddy mess. By the time the senior boys were running, the trails had become a veritable quagmire. Here is Coach Ayotte's report on an amazing day of ploughing through rain, mud and ridiculously wet grass:

The cross-country team competed in the North Shore Championships at Don Ross School in Squamish on Wednesday, October 26th. We had a larger than usual contingent of athletes competing, though some were injured and were unable to come at the last minute. The weather conditions were horrible but the Cavs kept a positive attitude despite the wind, the rain, the cold and the mud. The trail was definitely not ideal as it became more and more muddy and athletes were slipping and falling, especially by the senior boys race.

In the juvenile category Gabrielle Bourgault-Kennaley won the silver while Liz Mathisen was seventh in the bantam category with Amelia Bradecamp not far behind at tenth. In the 8-10 category overall, grade 9 Gaby placed a very impressive tenth , earning her a spot in the Provincials next weekend as a junior. This is a noteworthy accomplishment as Gaby was running against and qualified against some strong grade 10's. Liz came up to complete her race in the mud and then went back down to West Van to play in her field hockey game. The coaches appreciate Liz's dedication and were very proud of all the girls. Gaby will run in Kelowna next week with some of our seniors.

In the bantam category, Kai O'Krane led the way, placing in the top 20 with Kolbing Winkler and Jack Bradecamp following. Zaref Anderson had a terrific race in the juvenile boys category and showed that hard work can pay off as he's improved his times each race.

In the senior category we were down two runners at the last minute. Despite this, Meghan Garland and Charlotte Campbell ran great races and both qualified for Provincials. Morgan Border narrowly missed qualifying due to a bad cramp and Bella Hallam was all smiles and worked hard in her race despite the horrible weather. Abby Lustaeg also cramped up but finished with her fine running form intact. The senior girls overall team placed fifth overall, so missed qualifying as a team by one point.

In the senior boys category, the overall team comprised of Austin Sutherland, Casey Lake, Sean Buckles and Jaedon Chase JUST missed qualifying by one place with a fifth place overall team finish. As individuals, Austin Sutherland and Casey Lake qualified at third and tenth respectively. Sean and Jaedon contributed hugely in points and should be commended for running up from the junior category into the senior all season to help our overall team points. This meant they were running up to 3 km further than they would have had they run as juniors. Thanks Sean and Jaedon!

Gaby, Charlotte, Austin and Casey are Kelowna bound next weekend and Meghan Garland would be but is unable to attend. Overall, the coaches are proud of the athletes. Cross-country can be grueling in the bad weather and it takes a lot of depth and grit to come out and run in the sometimes horrific conditions our lovely West Coast offers at times. Next year, the coaches are hopeful that despite losing three strong grade 12's, our contingent of younger runners will make the Cavs a force to be reckoned with. Thanks to the coaches and parents who came out to support the athletes in the rain!

Even a day of constant rain and mud cannot keep the senior girls from a big smile.

Gabrielle Bourgault-Kennaley finished 2nd in the juvenile girls category.

Charlotte Campbell is once again off to the BC Championships.

Casey Lake had a very strong race and broke into the Top 10 in the Zone Championships.

Austin Sutherland had a great day finishing 3rd.

Junior Cavs Highlander Fling Pushes Them Into 3rd Place

The junior field hockey team defeated the West Van Highlanders 3-0 to vault into 3rd place on the last day of league play. This all-important win means that the Cavs will avoid the Handsworth Royals juggernaut in the North Shore semi-finals. Here is Coach Erin French's game report:

The Junior Girls leap-frogged Rockridge this Wednesday, into 3rd place overall with a commanding 3-0 win against West Van. The girls came to play and by all accounts played their most complete game this season – they wanted to win. With lots of talk on the field, passes were crisp and girls moved to space. It's hard to name only a few stand-outs as so many girls had a strong game. However, Devon Litherland, Olivia MacKenzie, McKinley Kennedy, Seli Estrand were definitely on top of their game. We cannot forget Olivia Heubner who had a beautiful tap in at the post. Stella Guernsey was outstanding as usual in net and recorded the shut-out.

The girls have their semi-final this Tuesday, also against West Van, at William Griffin at 3:00pm.

Hot Day 2 Leads Senior Volleyball To ISA Bronze

The senior volleyball team is on a roll. On Thursday night, they clinched first place in North Shore Division 1 with a 3-1 victory over Bodwell. This means that they host both Division 1 semi-finals on Tuesday. Then, the Cavs rode a red-hot second day of play at the ISA Championships all the way to the bronze medal.

On Thursday night, the Cavs were simply too complete a team for the Bodwell Bruins. The Bruins made some spectacular defensive plays to keep two of the games tight, but Collingwood's big hitters were too much for the Bruins. Hazel Atkins hammered spike after spike for easy points. Kate Phillips was also a real force as she won multiple points in each game as well.

The ISA Championship was a 14-team double round robin event. This turned out to be a blessing for the Cavs who struggled on Day 1. Collingwood defeated Stratford Hall, but lost to Brentwood, West Point Grey and Southridge. In the end, Southridge would win the gold and WPGA won the silver so these tough games against the best teams definitely helped the girls be ready for Day 2.

On Saturday morning, the Cavs came out played tremendous volleyball as they avenged their loss against Brentwood with a 2-1 victory over the Red and Black. Coach Morris was pumped after the win: "The match went to three and the girls were on FIRE! Hazel with her powerful attacks, Kate with her hits, placement and defensive digs, Julia came alive in the middle with brick-wall blocks and quick attacks, Maddie kept the opponents on their toes moving around the sets, Daisy had a consistent tricky serve. This game you could truly say was the turning point of the tournament for the girls. They were the best team on the day and it was because they played together as a team!"

After the big win over BCS, the Cavs just kept rolling. They defeated Southpointe, which earned them a trip to the bronze medal game. In this game, Collingwood defeated York House in three tough sets. The coaches were particularly proud that the team lost the first set but stormed back to beat the Tigers in three.

Collingwood has not won a medal at the ISA Championships for eight years so this was a major accomplishment for this year's terrific team. The Cavs now play at 7:30 this Tuesday in McCord Gym.

Junior Cavs Off To Field Hockey Final

The junior field hockey team has had a terrific year. They won the ISA Championship, finished second at the UBC tournament and are now off to the North Shore Final. The Cavs exploded for four second-half goals and defeated West Van for the second time in a week. Here is Coach Shirkoff's report on his amazing team's latest victory:

For the second time in a week, the Junior Field Hockey Cavs faced the might West Van Highlanders in the semi-finals of the North Shore league in a do-or-die game.

The first half saw both teams trade chances. Olivia M, Devon L, Gabbi V and Liz M sent ball after ball through for the forwards to turn into high quality scoring chances. Olivia H. had three tremendous chances only to be stoned by the WV goalie. At the other end, Maisy H, McKinley K, Maddie A and Nicole created a formidable wall for the Highlanders to scale with Stella G making some key saves to keep the Highlanders off the scoresheet. Half time saw the score tied 0-0 although one parent was heard to observe that "We are ahead 0-0".

The second half opened with strong tactical play by the Lady Cavs as they strategically tested the West Vancouver defense with forays up the right hand side. 7 minutes into the first half Olivia H scored a beautiful tip-in goal on some outstanding work by Steph G and Seli E. Five minutes later, Olivia put the Lady Cavs ahead by 2. The Lady Cavs pressed their advantage, creating space in the midfield for the forwards to use. Seli E and Lilah S capitalized on the open space to score two more goals.

The Lady Cavs now face the Handsworth Royals for the fourth time this season, 3pm on Thursday at Ambleside E or Rutledge Field if it isn't flooded.

Titans Toppled - Cavs Off To North Shore Final

The senior volleyball defeated Mulgrave 3-1 yesterday to win their Division 1 semi-final. Collingwood will now face the Bodwell Bruins in the final on Thursday at 6:00pm.

The Cavs were out of the gate fast last night as they piled up the points early and often in the first game of the match. The Titans looked to be completely outclassed and the home fans were relishing the thought of a quick three-game sweep.

These thoughts were quickly erased in the second game as Mulgrave roared out to a 22-10 lead. Where the Cavs had been the aggressor in the first game, it was suddenly the Titans who were on the offensive. They also stymied the power game of Hazel Atkins with some fine defence. While the Cavs did mount an outstanding comeback due to the terrific serving of Maddie Filewych, it was too little too late and the match was suddenly 1-1.

In games 3 and 4, Collingwood did enough to win the match, but they never did regain the complete dominance they had displayed in game 1. To her credit, Hazel kept hitting hard and the balls eventually began to find their way through the Mulgrave defence. Kate Phillips was her usual amazing self. Her passing was first-class and she contributed with some timely hitting. Julia Petterson also became much more of a net presence in the latter part of the match.

Once again, there was a great support for the team. Hopefully, there will be even more fans out for the final on Thursday in McCord Gym.

The Cavs celebrate a big point.

Collingwood Survives the Rain at ISEA Cross Country

After yesterday's ISEA Championships, we are all done for the season! We had classic cross country conditions and our athletes did their best to navigate their way through the wet and muddy conditions at Jericho Beach Park. Overall, we were extremely successful in placing in the top half of each race! The highlights were Grade 3 boys, Grade 5 boys and Grade 7 girls placing 5th out of 13 teams. Individually, Katie Lustig (Grade 6) had a fire in her belly to get 3rd place (and Ewan Robertson ran his heart out to get 8th place (out of 113 boys). Congratulations to all of our athletes who competed both at the ISEA's and throughout the season. It has been very exciting to see how much all of our athletes have improved and we really look forward to having them come out in Term 3 for the Track and Field season. Keep up the running everyone!

CAIS Boys Soccer Finish 2nd at ISEAs

The CAIS Boys finished 2nd last week in the ISEA Championships. Mr. Payne and Mr. Allen are extremely proud of the effort the boys displayed all day and how they have grown as a team from the beginning of September.

In our semi final game against St. George's, we quickly put the pressure on St. George's and came out like a team that was ready to show why they finished better than Saints at the CAIS tournament. The boys remembered the 6-1 drubbing they took a few weeks ago and wanted to show that we were a completely different group. A great through ball by our midfield allowed David Howard to get free and put the ball in the back of the net. 1-0, Collingwood! St.George's than quickly regrouped and started to put pressure on us by using the down hill slope to their advantage and consistently looking to put the ball behind our back line. What they didn't expect was the 4 horsemen along the back end of Presley Bosa, James Foote, Grant Anderson, and Tanner Jackson were ready to repel any attempts made by the Saints. They quickly shut down any attack up front and forced St. George's to take shots from 20 yards out which were easily saved by Ryan Yacoub. The lads did well to move the ball wide to our midfield and allow us to dictate the play. In the 22nd minute, a brief mental lapse allowed for Saints forward to get through on a through ball by their midfield and equalize the game. 1-1 at the half.

The boys regrouped in the 2nd half and used the slope to their advantage and pinned the Saints team in their end. The pressure paid off and we took a 2-1 lead with another David Howard goal from a great give and go play with him and Mario Clopatofsky. This might have been the goal of the season for the squad. Saints then game back with urgency and were looking tie it back up. Once again, the four horsemen came through with the help of our midfield to hold off the numerous free kicks awarded to Saints. We finally got the monkey off our back and won 2-1. The boys were super excited to defeat St. George's on their home field.

Next up was a rematch with our rivals from West Point Grey Academy (WPGA) who beat us 5-0 at the CAIS tournament. The boys were feeling the momentum from their earlier victory and chomping at the bit for the opening whistle to blow. Right off the start, we trounced on a WPGA turnover and move the ball wide with our midfield then it was crossed into the middle. After a first attempt save by the keeper, we got the deflection and Elliott Wardle made no mistake and scored. 1-0 Collingwood. Now the grudge match began...

WPGA came right back at us and put us on our back foot but the 4 horsemen stepped up to the task and made sure that Ryan Yacoub only had to make saves from shots taken well outside our 18 yard box. WPGA controlled most of the half and eventually the pressure paid off and they got the tying goal.

The 2nd half was much the same as our boys were getting tired of defending. We kept clearing the ball and WPGA would send it right back at us. Eventually cracks started to emerge in our back line but once again Ryan Yacoub did his best David Ousted impression and made a highlight reel of saves. After a free kick was awarded in our favour in the last minute, we quickly got the ball out wide and send David Howard to the corner who made a beauty left foot cross to our right midfielder who was crashing the net and the shot just went wide. Off to overtime.

both 1st and 2nd Overtime was much of the same as the 2nd half, both teams had some chances especially WPGA but Ryan kept us in the game. The heart and determination by our boys was something I never seen before. These lads really wear their emotions on their sleeves and wanted this victory. The final whistle went and off to a shootout. Unfortunately, we couldn't come through and lost the shootout. The boys should hold their heads high and be proud of what they accomplished this year. I have never seen a team grow as much as this one did and they showed why we play sports. The memories, character building, and just fun they had will be with them for the rest of their lives.

It was fun to watch the likes of David, Presley, James, Ryder, Tanner, Elliott, Isaac, and Ryan come together to lead as a group with their bottle flipping expertise, plus Durban, Chris, Grant, Andrew, Max, and Mario for all stepping up their game against older competition and lastly Ryan Holden making his presence felt today after missing most of the season due to injury.
