The senior soccer team opened league play with a 3-2 penalty shoot-out victory over Bodwell yesterday afternoon. Tariq Alibhai was the star of the game with a number of sensational saves. None was bigger than his brilliant stop of the second Bodwell shooter in the penalty shoot-out.

Collingwood got goals from Cam Bird and Adam Lewis in regulation time. In the shoot-out, the Cavs were picture-perfect as all five players found the back twine. Duncan Bustos, Adam Lewis, Evan Wark, Nick Jessel and Derek Punter all came through to help secure the victory.

The Cavs now visit Mulgrave tomorrow afternoon at 4:15 for their second league match.

Field Hockey Cavs Score Three Late Goals To Defeat Seycove

After an exhausting weekend at the ISA tournament, the senior field hockey were back in action on Tuesday against local rival Seycove. The Cavs have been so dominant in North Shore AA action over the past few years that they may have taken the Seyhawks a little too lightly. This was clearly a mistake as Seycove finished 4th in the provincial championships last year and have many of their top players back this year.

Whether it was exhaustion or overconfidence, it soon became apparent that the Cavs had a challenge on their hands. Seycove has a highly athletic team and they were chomping on the bit to test themselves against Collingwood. At halftime, the score was 0-0.

Coaches Gold, Bruner and Underwood were using a new tactical system for the game and although the players were anxious to scrap it, the coaches demanded that the team persevere. As the second half progressed, it was clear that the team was beginning to get it.

With ten minutes to go, Nisha Mainra notched the go-ahead goal off a pass from Jaimie Chrystal. Holly Robertshaw followed this up to make it 2-0. Charlotte Campbell scored in the last minute to make it 3-0.

Cavs Topple Titans In Soccer Action

The senior soccer team posted their second straight league victory yesterday with a 2-1 win over Mulgrave. This is a great start to the season for the very young but gritty squad.

The Cavs were definitely the dominant team on the day, but some valuable lessons were learned about the need to put an opponent away early. Collingwood created numerous good scoring chances but squandered the opportunities. As a result, Mulgrave's confidence rose and when a defensive miscue by the Cavs occurred the Titans pounced on it to score their goal.

In the end, the Cavs' superior skill prevailed and the team escaped with the valuable three points. Nick Somers and Adam Lewis scored for Collingwood.

Thanks to all the fans who turned out to cheer on the boys. Great to see some early school spirit.

Cross-Country Team Enters Season On The Dead Run

Coach Kate Ayotte has been writing amazing reports about the track team for a couple of years now. This year, she is also helping out with the Cross-Country team so we now can look forward to great reports on their meets too. Here is her first report of the season:

The cross-country team had their first meet of the season on Wednesday, September 28th at Ambleside park in the sunshine and all athletes should be very proud of their results! In the senior girls division, as a team Collingwood, was fifth overall and in the senior boys fourth overall! Both of these teams have a VERY strong chance of qualifying for the Provincials in Kelowna on Saturday, November 5th.

In the bantam girls division, Liz Mathisen was recovering from a cold but still managed to have a very strong race, placing in the top half of her field. In the juvenile girls race, Gabrielle Bourgault-Kennaley impressed the coaches by placing fourth overall and Eve Parry ran very hard as well.

In the senior girls division, Charlotte Campbell and Meghan Garland, both suffering from field hockey exhaustion, placed in the top fifteen. Morgan Border ran her most impressive race yet and placed in the top 25 in a VERY large field. Abby Lustig, Nikki Sutton-MacGregor and Bella Hallam all contributed to the senior girls fifth placing overall!

In the bantam boys division, Kai O'Krane led the way, placing in the top half of his field with Kolbi Winckler, James Borrill and Jack Bradecamp not far behind. In the juvenile boys race, exchange student Adam McKern would have been second overall but has to run as an exhibition as he's from Australia. Zaref Anderson just keeps improving and had a terrific finish.

In the senior boys race Austin Sutherland placed second overall and Casey Lake was 12th. Running as seniors, Grade 10's Jaedon Chase and Sean Buckles were honestly not far behind Casey and should be very proud of their finish.

The team's next race will be at Rice Lake on Thursday, October 6th and the coaches are looking forward to even better results. In order to qualify for Provincials, the top four teams in senior and the top two in junior qualify. With some more senior girls running next week, as well as a few more senior boys, it looks as though Collingwood will be placing in the top four again!

Last year, Austin Sutherland and Charlotte Campbell ran through the mud and rain at the BC Championships. This year, the coaches have high hopes that they will qualify a full boys' and girls' team.

Cavs Finish 8th At Prestigious Bridgman Cup

$

0

The Bridgman Cup brings together the best high school field hockey teams in the province. Competition in this tournament is fierce. Teams enter this tournament to test themselves. This is the reason that the Collingwood coaches and players give up a huge portion of their Thanksgiving weekend each year.

This year proved to be no different for the Cavs. Coming off an impressive 3rd place finish last year in the Bridgman, the talented squad had high hopes. Collingwood got off to an impressive start to the tournament but in the end a lack of scoring was to cost them. Despite some impressive performances where they dominated play, the Cavs finished 8th.

Collingwood finished 2nd in their pool after a win 2-1 win over Kelowna Secondary(KSS) and two 1-1 ties versus Carson Graham and Oak Bay. In the KSS game, Maddie Connell scored both goals. After being down 1-0 at half, this was a big win to kick off the tournament.

In the Carson game, it was Grade 10 rookie Liz McMullin that provided the scoring. Liz scored on a 'beautiful' reverse sweep shot. Unfortunately, Carson scored five minutes later to tie the game.

A win over Oak Bay would have provided the Cavs with top position in their pool. And speaking of pools, that's what the field essentially turned into after torrential rain fell throughout the game. Nisha Mainra scored for Collingwood, but both teams struggled to perform with the playing surface covered in standing water.

The tie against Oak Bay meant that Collingwood faced the always tough Cowichan team in their quarterfinal. After Cowichan took a 2-0 lead on a pair of terrific goals, the Cavs stormed back. Maddie scored her third goal of the tournament off a penalty stroke. Despite the loss, Coach Underwood was raving about the team's outstanding play throughout the game.

Day 3 was a bit of a disappointment for the Cavs. They would be shut-out 1-0 by both Shawnigan Lake and Francis Kelsey. Although Collingwood controlled play in both these games for large periods of time, they could not find their scoring touch. Despite this, the coaching staff was very pleased with the team's performance. The girls played six tough games all against top AAA teams and the Cavs had a chance to win every game.

Things don't get any easier for Collingwood this week as they head out to UBC on Thursday to play many of the same teams in the UBC tournament. The Cavs are the defending champions.

A lack of scoring punch hurt the Cavs this weekend, but having Nat Dalton in net means that you're always in the game. Nat was outstanding as usual.

Senior Volleyball Wins Opening League Match

The senior volleyball team has all its starting players back from a year ago. The team will not be content with simply making the playoffs this year. Here is Coach Lee's report on their first league match of the year:

The Senior Girls Volleyball team kicked off their season last night with a victory over Rockridge. The team won the match 3-1. The Cavs led for the majority of the four sets and the coaches credit the victory to the strong all-around play from the team particularly the offensive contributions from Julia Petterson and Hazel Atkins. With most of the players from the team returning, the team is looking is looking to make a big impact on the North Shore league this year. The coaches are also expecting big things from up and coming Grade 11's Avin Saririan, Neeki Alavi, and Daisy Wang.

The team hopes to have a big crowd cheer them on in the next home game Tuesday Night against Mulgrave.

Hazel Atkins is a key member of a senior volleyball team that has great aspirations this year.

Lakeside Reflections: New Headboy Meets New Headmaster

Who is he, and what does he stand for? I want to explore his mind, learn about him, and learn from him. I want to peek into the future.

After all, he is our new Headmaster.

The office appears strikingly different from the last time I visited. The pictures have been replaced, the furniture has changed, and the tarnished gym bag next to the desk has disappeared. One distinctive feature, however, remains the same. Sinking in the soft, gray couch directly across Mr. Lake's warm, charismatic smile, I feel very comfortable. I think to myself, what was behind Mr. Lake's move from California to B.C.?

Upon discussion, I discover that aside from a complex set of reasons that span professional to personal, it was Collingwood's distinctive qualities that caught Mr. Lake's eye.

Senior Volleyball Defeats Mulgrave

The senior volleyball team posted an impressive 3-1 victory over Mulgrave in league action last night. The Cavs only host two league games this year so the team was thrilled to see a big crowd out to support them. It was another impressive display of school spirit and the girls rose to the occasion with some terrific volleyball.

Collingwood won the first game 25-21, but dropped the second game 20-25. However, they roared back to post a 25-20 victory before finishing off the Titans with a thrilling 25-23 win.

Julia Petterson was Player of the Game. She was a leader throughout the match and had amazing chemistry all night long with Maddie Filewych. Together, the two girls ran a series of 'quicks' that Mulgrave had no answer for throughout the match.

Hazel Atkins was her usual force on the court and Daisy Wang had a fantastic night serving. The Cavs won 16 points off Daisy's serving. The Play of the Day came from Kate Phillips who pulled off an amazing off-the-court cross-court shot that was downright 'incredible'.

Hazel Atkins goes high to win Collingwood a point.

Junior Field Hockey Cavs Weather The Storm - Win ISA's

Let's face it. The weather this past weekend varied from wet and cold to downright horrible. However, throughout all these miserable conditions, the mighty Collingwood junior field hockey team battled and fought and finally came away Saturday afternoon with the ISA trophy in hand. Here is Coach Shirkoff's report:

Like the weather office, the Junior Field Hockey team issued a warning on a weekend that they are a force to contend with in the future, capturing the gold medal at the 2016 ISA tournament.

Junior Cavs began their tournament run with a solid 3-1 effort against York House behind a strong effort from Olivia M and Alice G. Next up was Crofton House where the players faced onslaughts from the wind and rain as well as a very strong Crofton team. Despite lightning fast runs by Seli E, Emily B and Lilah S, the Junior Cavs finished on the wrong end of a 2-0 game. The final pool game was an 8-0 win against Southridge featuring some strong play from Charlotte C, Alexa F, Jena A and Muneet G. The team finished pool play in 2nd place setting up a rematch with the hosts, Crofton House.

Right from the opening whistle, the team came ready to play. Our forwards set the tone very early with Olivia H scoring an early goal in the first 3 minutes. Pressure continued to rain down on Crofton throughout the first half with Gabi V and Devon L stepping into gaps and blowing through the Crofton players like the wind through leaves. Steph G capitalized on beautiful give and go play with Devon L to put the Junior Cavs ahead 2-0 mid-way through the first half.

Crofton mounted a spirited defence with the Cavalier defence having to weather a series of short corners but Stella G (playing in her first ISA tournament as a goalie), McKinley K, Nicole B, Maisie H, Maddie A and Liz M were equal to the task, creating an impenetrable bulwark. As the game continued, the Junior Cavs continued to press their advance in the Crofton end but were unlucky to not be able to capitalize on their opportunities.

Next up for the team, the UBC Junior team where they will face teams from Shawnigan Lake, Brentwood and a rematch with Crofton.

Go Cavs!

Austin Sutherland represented Collingwood at the Sundodger Invitational cross-country meet in Seattle, Washington on Saturday, September 17th and placed an impressive 23rd out of 63 runners. The other competitors, with the exception of one Handsworth student, were high-level American runners. Austin ran 5 km in a time of 16:28 seconds.
