News Around Wentworth
Traffic passes will be going home with students on the first day of School Wednesday, September 7, 2016
The traffic passes are colour coded by grade and grade specific for your child. Please remove backing from passes and place on windshield of your vehicle. Passes will be used by Traffic Coordinators at student pick-up time each day to direct you to your student pick-up traffic line and are intended for this purpose only – traffic passes are not indented for use as a parking pass.
Parent student pick-up timing – to reduce traffic congestion at student dismissal, please do not arrive to pick up your children earlier than ten (10) minutes prior to their scheduled dismissal time. Earlier arrival could compromise pick-up timing and require parents to be redirected out of the traffic line and asked to return later.
Please direct any questions you have regarding traffic passes to Jennifer.doherty@collingwood.org

Connell and Dalton Named To National Development Squad
Maddie Connell and Natalie Dalton were named the Field Hockey Canada's national women's development squad last week. The two Collingwood stars were impressive in helping BC win the gold at the U-18 National Championships and obviously impressed the national selectors. With Maddie controlling the midfield and Nat insuring that goals will be hard to come by, Collingwood hopes to repeat as provincial champions this year. Here is the press release from Field Hockey Canada:
Canada’s Women’s National Program has updated its Junior Development Squad (JDS) after the completion of the 2016 Field Hockey Under-16 and Under-18 National Championships.
The updated list of athletes will focus on the upcoming four-year junior cycle which culminates with the Junior World Cup in 2020.
“I thought the level of competition (at the Nationals) was impressive,” says Women’s Junior National Team Head Coach Steph Andrews. “The level of development of the year since the last Nationals was good. I think the talent pool is definitely growing.”
Many members of the previous Junior Development Squad competed in the recent National Championships and a handful – including Margaret Pham, Hannah Eborall, and Jaslan Stirling – took part in the previous World Cup cycle, which came to an end for Canada this year at the Junior Women’s Pan American Championship in Trinidad and Tobago.
Other athletes have made their way onto the 30-woman roster for the first time.
The squad will convene in Vancouver, British Columbia for a Junior Development Camp in August.

We are looking forward to another exciting year of athletics at the Wentworth Campus. Last year was a huge success all around within the program with plentiful amount of participants for all teams. The year ended with an ISEA Championship in gr. 7 Girls soccer and numerous individual track and field awards. Let's build on this and continue to bring home more championships! This all starts with participation in grade 5 and building towards strong teams in grade 7s. We are lucky to have a great coaching staff of committed teachers at all levels that can't wait to get out there.
Please click on the link below to a google form to sign up for the sport teams offered for first term. This includes gr. 5, 6 and 7 soccer for boys, gr. 5, 6 and 7 volleyball for girls, and gr. 3 to 7 cross country.

Welcome Back BBQ
All Collingwood families, faculty, staff and alumni are invited to our traditional Welcome Back BBQ on Friday, September 9th at Klahanie Park from 5 – 7 pm.
Enjoy BBQ hamburgers and hotdogs while you catch up with Collingwood friends, families and faculty.
The kids will love the bouncy castles, face painting and balloons, and we'll all be looking forward to the entry of the Grad Class - always an entertaining part of the evening!
Back again by popular demand - Johnny's Pops - made from local and organic ingredients.
Once again this year, THINK GREEN! Please be sure to return all your waste items to the Recycling Station and we'll separate the organics, glass/metal/plastic, and non-recyclables for proper disposal. In an effort to reduce the use of plastic water bottles, we encourage you to bring your own refillable water bottle. We will have water fill stations available.
The fun starts at 5pm - we look forward to seeing you there!
Look who we saw at the Library Conference!
Lots of laughs and learning at the Library conference in San Francisco. We should have known Lemony Snicket (aka Daniel Handler) would do something crazy in our photo. Happy to see the man himself as he often keeps his appearance a mystery! Check out his books in the fiction section if you haven't yet - we've just added some new titles...
So excited to have the 2015 Newbery award winner signed by the author (poet) himself. Maybe you will join our Newbery challenge this year and read it yourself...details to follow!
We packed our copy of Beekle along in the suitcase hoping to get it signed by Caldecott award-winning author/illustrator Dan Santat - so worth it!
We were the first in line to meet Mac Barnett- excited to get an autographed advanced pre-sale of his hot new release! We were feeling very star-struck :)
Soccer and Field Hockey Cavs In Action This Friday
The senior boys' soccer team will take to the field at 8:45am on Friday to open the 2016-17 sports season. The Cavs will be out to defend the ISA Championship they won last year. Right away they will face a formidable foe as they play perennial powerhouse Glen-Lyon Norfolk in Game 1.
Collingwood is fielding a very young team, but new Headmaster/Coach Rob Lake has been pushing the squad hard. The team may lack experience but they promise to be a hard-working crew who will look to apply constant pressure to the opposition.
Taking the field right after the soccer boys will be the senior girls' field hockey team who are tip off their Polar Bear Cup game at 9:30am. The field hockey squad is coming off one of their best years ever. In 2015, the team won the ISA Championship, UBC Championship, North Shore AA Championship and the AA BC Championship.
This year's squad features 14 returning players and is absolutely brimming with talent. Coaches Gold, Underwood and Bruner can hardly contain their glee that they have such an amazing group of young women to work with again this year.
Coach Lake will be looking to Nick Somers to provide leadership and a deft scoring touch this season.
With 14 players back from last year, the field hockey team has high hopes of being #1 again this year.

Field Hockey Cavs Red Hot At The Polar Bear Tourney
The senior field hockey team has picked up where they left off last season and is already playing some great hockey. The team opened their season with two resounding victories and one tough-fought tie today.
In their opening match, the Cavs defeated Little Flower Academy 5-1. Maddie Connell scored four goals and Bronwyn Bird added another. Collingwood scored five more goals in a shut-out win over Chilliwack. Maddie popped in two more goals as did Holly Robertshaw, while Charlotte Campbell chipped in another.
In their final game of the day, the Cavs faced a gritty Kelowna squad. After a slow start, the team picked up the pace and were unlucky not to score. Their best opportunity came when Charlotte just narrowly missed on a great re-direction of a shot from Maddie.
Collingwood now faces Handsworth tomorrow morning at 9:15am at Crofton.
Maddie Connell opened the season with a four-goal game.

Sutherland Impressive At Sundodger Meet
Sutherland Impressive At Sundodger Meet
Austin Sutherland has been Collingwood's top male long-distance runner for the past two years. As he enters his Grade 12 year, both the cross-country and the track coaches have high hopes for him. Here is a report from Coach Kate Ayotte:
Austin Sutherland represented Collingwood at the Sundodger Invitational cross-country meet in Seattle, Washington on Saturday, September 17th and placed an impressive 23rd out of 63 runners. The other competitors, with the exception of one Handsworth student, were high-level American runners. Austin ran 5 km in a time of 16:28 seconds. The coaches are hopeful of Austin leading a strong senior boys team to the Provincials this year in November.
Field Hockey Cavs Win ISA Silver
The senior field hockey team lost 2-1 to arch-rival Crofton House in the ISA Championship on Saturday afternoon. The Cavs battled hard throughout the game, but CHS was a little better on the day.
There is no doubt that Collingwood and CHS are two of the top contenders for the BC title this year. Both teams are loaded with talent and almost all the starters for both squads played in the BC Championship game last year. Of course, it was Cavs that won that game 2-1 in a classic Collingwood-CHS nail-biter.
In pool-play at the ISA's, the Cavs defeated St. Michaels University School (SMUS) 4-2, Brentwood 6-0 and the Shawnigan Lake 'B' team 3-0. The win over SMUS was particularly noteworthy as the Blue Jags are also one of the top AA teams in BC this year.
Coaches Gold, Bruner and Underwood are very pleased with the team's progress so far this year. Despite the loss this weekend, they feel the team is coming together well and will learn from the mistakes they made when put under pressure in this tournament. The Cavs are back in action on Tuesday against Seycove.
