The senior soccer team pushed their league record to a sparkling 5-0 as they defeated STA 2-1 in a penalty shoot-out yesterday. McKinley Kennedy was the star of the show as she had a very unusual hat-trick. McKinley scored in regulation. She then scored in the penalty shoot-out. And to top things off, she stopped a STA penalty shot to secure the victory. Here is Coach Mulock's report on the great win:
The senior girls' soccer team kicked off this week with a huge victory against the STA Saints. The senior girls are undefeated this year and have played some of the best soccer the coaches have seen in years. The team is number one in the league and had to win today's game to keep their spot at the top.
The first half of the game was a battle for possession. Both teams had close shots on net with no result, leaving the score at half 0-0. The girls' knew the importance of the game and came out with more energy and determination in the second half. Despite a goal from STA within the first 10 minutes the Cavs continued to battle and put pressure on their defensive end. Shortly after, McKinley Kennedy, secured a loose ball about 25 yards out and took a shot sending the ball over the goalie and in the back of the net leaving the game tied.
The game went into a shootout and Sophia Garofolo, Tannis McKay, Megan Mauro all scored for the Cavs. McKinley Kennedy was the hero once again with another great shot on net and a great performance as keeper to seal the deal in the shootout.
The coaches couldn't be happier with the result and they are looking forward to the team's next game on Wednesday against Seycove Secondary. The Cavs remain at the top of the league with 13 points.
Meg Mauro fights for possession in last week's game against Rockridge.
