For years, the North Shore junior tennis title has literally been conceded to the Sentinel Spartans from Day 1 of the season. Collingwood's plucky AA squad could never muster quite enough strength to upset the AAA Spartans. Yesterday, the Cavs rose up and defeated Sentinel 6-5 in an unbelievably tense match and brought home the trophy. Here is Coach Vidic's report on the huge win:
After 9 years of finishing runner up, the Junior Tennis Team has won the North Shore title by narrowly beating out Sentinel 6-5. Led by the Robertson brothers on the boys' side and Maya Negris on the girls' side, the team stepped up and won some close matches.
However, none were closer than the deciding match between Grace and Isabel Drouin and the Sentinel girls doubles team. With the overall score in matches tied at 5-5 the winner of girls doubles match would take the title.
The girls' team got off to a hot start taking the first 3 games with some hard ground strokes and consistent serving. However, the Sentinel girls steadied themselves and worked their way back into the match, eventually forcing a tiebreak. There were some very tense moments early on as the girls lost the first 3 points of the tiebreak. However, with some gutsy play they quickly bounced back and tied the score up at 5-5. They next two points were a blur but the loud cheer from the Collingwood crowd confirmed the winner.
Overall, an excellent team effort and a good warm up for the Jr. Provincials next week.
