The senior girls' basketball team opened the first week of the season with six exciting games. This was an unbelievable start to their campaign and culminated with them bringing home the ISA bronze medal this past weekend. Here is a report from Coach McLaughlin:
This past week saw the Senior Girls' Basketball team opening up their season with one of the busiest starts in recent memory. At the beginning of the week, the girls travelled out to Abbotsford to participate in the first annual Big Ticket Tournament. To play in this tournament was an honour as it featured some of the top competition from all divisions and at the end of the tournament, a Grade 12 student from each team earns a $1000 scholarship. The Cavs were fortunate to have both Muneet G and Kayleigh G receive scholarships for their athletic prowess, academic standings, and contributions to the community.
The bronze medal game was against Shawnigan Lake. Once again, it was a tale of two halves. Collingwood began very strong taking a big lead in the first quarter 23-10 and then pushing it to 38-19 for half-time. However, foul trouble would once again mess with the Cavaliers' plans as several key players had to sit for extended amounts of time with significant personal fouls. Thankfully, the lead from the first half and some composure down the stretch enabled the Sr Girls to come away with the win and the bronze medal.
This week the Senior Girls will be taking part in the No Regrets Tournament, opening with a "White Out" game on Thursday at 11:30 at Collingwood. They will open up regular season league play Dec 10 against Sutherland, 7:30 at Collingwood.
Muneet Gill in action last year at the Cav Classic. This year the girls' team has even more home tournament action as Collingwood will host both our boys' and girls' teams in the No Regrets tournament this weekend. The Cav Classic will follow in January.
