The Grade 9 girls' basketball team kept their perfect league record intact with a come-from-behind victory over the West Van Highlanders yesterday. The home crowd was treated to an impressive rally late in the 3rd quarter. With momentum in their favour, the Cavs kept it going in the 4th and pulled away from the stunned Highlanders. Here is Coach Fraser's report:
The Grade 9 girls basketball team is still undefeated in league play.
The girls came out of the gate low on energy and could not score against West Van's solid zone defence. West Van was poised and slowly pulled away until with 1:28 left in the third period they were up by 8, an almost insurmountable lead in Grade 9 girls basketball.
Coach Burnett made an impassioned time-out speech and the girls came out with incredible determination and pressed and trapped West Van's ball carriers. They scored 10 points to West Van's 2 in the last 80 seconds to tie it up at the buzzer of the third.
They carried this determination into the fourth quarter and won the game 38 to 26. Rachael Chete had 17 points, Sara Ndlovu-Fraser had a triple double, Lola Bosa and Tiffany Wu came off the bench and played tight defence just when we needed it, and Liz Mathisen and Stella Guernsey gave all-round contributions.
