Madison Mailey Wins U-23 World Title With Canada Eights

Madison Mailey has been having a very good summer on the water. First, she was named to the Canadian U-23 rowing team and now her boat has won the World title. Here is a news release from Northeastern, where Madison attends university:

Northeastern women's rowing's Madison Mailey helped Team Canada capture the gold medal in the eights at the 2017 World Rowing Under-23 Championships in Plovdiv, Bulgaria last weekend.

"We are really proud of Madison for the work ethic and perseverance it took to make the Canadian Eight and win the World Championships," said head coach Joe Wilhelm. "She has been a great competitor for Northeastern over the past three years, and the experience she has gained this summer will be invaluable for her and our team."

Mailey (Lions Bay, British Columbia), rowing out of Burnaby Lake Rowing Club, competed with Caileigh Filmer, Stephanie Grauer, Payne, Morgan Rosts, Antonia Frappell, Julia Vander Hoeven, Laura Court and Karen Lefsrud.

"Standing on the podium with a gold medal around my neck, knowing we set a U23 world best time, is a feeling I will never forget," Mailey said. "I am very excited to bring what I have learned over the past six weeks back to Northeastern for my last year as a Husky!"

The crew kicked things off on Thursday by posting a world best time in its opening heat to advance directly to Sunday's A Final. After the United States posted a world's best time in the heat prior to Canada taking the water, the Canadians responded with a time of 6:00.13, beating the American boat by .22 seconds. After battling with Germany at the start of the race, Canada powered through the last 1000m in first.

Canada continued its dominance in Sunday's final, winning the gold by open water after separating from the United States and Russian crews. The Canadians battled with the USA through to halfway mark of the race, but the American boat lost their rhythm following an issue with a seat to ensure victory for Canda.

Mailey stroked the first varsity boat throughout the 2017 season, helping the crew capture its fourth straight CAA Championship with a victory in the 1V to advance to the NCAA Championships. At nationals, the first varsity took fifth place in the 'C' level final to finish the season 17th in the nation. The crew also captured the silver medal at the Eastern Sprints.

During the spring season, Mailey collected All-CAA and First Team All-CRCA accolades.
