Collingwood's six Grade 12 volleyball players will play their last home game tonight. It is always sad when a student-athlete's high school career comes to an end and so it will be for Daisy, Darcy, Luda, Maddy, Nina and Sadie when the Cavs play Mulgrave tonight.
Although the season has not gone as hoped, these six athletes have played a key role in the resurgence of the senior volleyball program. Volleyball has long been in the shadow of Collingwood's highly successful field hockey program. However, after an amazing run in the Zone Playoffs last year, there was a real buzz about this year's squad. Fans have been treated to some excellent volleyball, but unfortunately some inconsistent play cost the team dearly at crucial times in matches.
After a top-six finish at the ISA Championships last week, the Cavs needed to defeat STA on Tuesday to keep their playoff hopes alive. Once again they had some spectacular moments, but not quite enough to defeat the always tough Fighting Saints.
Nevertheless, the team is looking forward to one final battle with Mulgrave tonight. It promises to be a great match.
