When Elias Ergas graduated from Collingwood in 2016, he went on to make an instant impact with the UBC Thunderbirds. Elias was part of some great UBC teams who dominated the BC club over the past few years. Elias has now stepped up even farther as he is part of the young Canada 7's squad that is now playing in the World Rugby Sevens Series.
The Canadian Men's 7's team was veteran-laden at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics that were of course played in the summer of 2021. The majority of the team retired right after the Olympics. Elias is part of the new young contingent that are trying to establish themselves on this very tough circuit. While 7's is a game of speed and power, it is also a game that requires enormous experience and savvy on the player's part. The current Canadian squad have definitely experienced some growing pains this year, but they played very well in the Vancouver 7's.
After losing pool games to the powerhouse Aussies and South Africans, the Canadians rallied on Saturday to beat Spain. Elias scored a very important try in this game. The Canadians then went on to beat the Japan and Scotland before falling to Ireland in the Consolation Final. This was a very good performance for the Canadians.
Congratulations to Elias. Hopefully, he will be a member of the Canadian team for years to come.
