The senior boys' basketball team has wrapped up the North Shore AA League title with one game left in the season. A massive win over STA yesterday secured the championship and home court advantage throughout the playoffs. Here is a report from Coach Wong:
Last night the Cavs fought off a pesky St. Thomas Aquinas, 83-70. Nic Wrixon demonstrated why he is one of the best players in BC, scoring 15 of his 37 points in the 4th quarter. The tenacious guard was a sparkling 7-11 from beyond the arc, hitting several shots from NBA range. Tanner Jackson set the tone early on with his smooth shooting, scoring a season high 16. Andersen Stewart was a stalwart on defense, as he stepped up to the task of stopping STA's 6'9 big man.
The turning point of the game was the heroic play of Grade 12 forward, Presley Bosa. His ferocious play on the court led to a series highlight reel turnovers and rebounds that clearly shifted the momentum of the game. He capped his night hitting a timely three to extend the Cavs lead.
The win puts the Cavs at 7-0 in league play, and more importantly, sealed the deal as North Shore AA League Champions. As the #1 seed, the Cavs will be playing their North Shore playoff games at home, a court they have become very familiar with this season. The North Shore boasts 4 top 10 teams in AA – something unprecedented in North Shore basketball. The road ahead will be a tough grind. Collingwood plays Notre Dame on Tuesday at 7:30pm, followed by Sutherland on Thursday to wrap up league play.
Collingwood sits 17-2 on the year, and remain undefeated in AA and AAA this year. The teams two losses are against AAAA powerhouses St. Georges' and Handsworth. For the latter, Collingwood lost a heartbreaking game 74-71 this week, after leading for the majority of the game. The coaches know this was a good experience to get "battle-tested" for playoffs, and the Vancouver Sea to Sky Championships.
Presley Bosa had a massive game yesterday earning Coach Wong's praise with his tough defensive play.
Nic Wrixon scored 37 points last night.
Subir Toor was another player who came off the bench to provide a huge spark for the Cavs.
Jack Dai was his usual fearless self driving to the hoop hard and playing relentless defence at all times.
