International Men's Day, November 19, 2021
Celebrating positive relationships amongst the genders is an opportunity for our community to work together to destigmatize vulnerable conversations and reignite healthy relationships.
Gender is an intersection of identity that can affect health, safety, education, and relationships. November is Men's Health Month and is sponsored by the Canadian charity, the Movember Foundation. (https://ca.movember.com/)
We want all members of our community to be safe, healthy, and happy. This means speaking to all members and ensuring they have what they need to succeed. Collingwood will be commemorating Movember with an increased awareness around Men's Health, and particularly mental health and well being. While mental health issues can affect anyone, boys and men are far more likely to die by suicide than their female peers. According to Homeward Health, men account for 75% of all suicides in Canada. Many activists are working towards raising awareness about men's mental health, including the "Man Enough" Podcast. (https://manenough.com/)
Movember is a month-long event that is facilitated by student leaders and dedicated staff, including Mr Blake Mahovic and Dr Selena Rathwell, and is geared towards celebrating positive masculinities and male role models. We are encouraging students to take part in a number of ways. We are focussing on the following topics:
- Male role models
- Men's Mental Health
- Healthy Relationships Between the Genders
As always, the best way to support our community is through communication and discussion around the issues which affect us all.
If you would like to discuss this in further detail or have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact Ms Rajoo, Director of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion.
