Alpine Cavs Combine To Win BC Banner

The Alpine team has returned with yet another BC Championship banner. Here is Coach Ramsden's report on the team's success:

The Alpine Team headed to Sun Peaks March 5 – 7 for three days of exciting competition for the Provincial Championships.

Day one saw Nicole Johnston, our lone snowboard representative, tackle the Snowboard GS course. Nicole has experienced a nagging calf injury this season and has only been on snow 3 days. She raced to an impressive 17th in the GS out of a field of over 40 females.

Day two was the first day of competition for the skiers. The girls and boys crushed their first run of the GS, which set them up well for the second run. Many athletes fell only a few gates in after a huge hole developed on course. Our team showed their aggression and great tactical skills by maneuvering around the hole while still maintaining speed. Both teams felt the pressure going into second run their combined time is what counts towards the final result. Addie Tiller and Morgan Border had commanding performances that moved them up multiple places. Addie Tiller won the bronze medal, Morgan Border came 7th, Jamie Border 13th, Saylor Sprenger 27th, Olivia Tiller 31st and Stella Price 48th. These awesome results were crucial since it the Girls team was now tied for first place in the team standings with our arch rival York House. The boys also showed their moves on the GS course placing 5th in the boys division. Sam Fuller lead the pack with a 9th place finish, Michael Kennedy 31st, Matthew Sayer 37th, Jack Mathisen 38th, Casey Lake 49th, and Kevin Huang went off course in spectacular fashion!

Day three was the final day of competition which saw both skiers and snowboarders take on the Terrain GS course. It was one run timed for each athlete and would be combined with the GS the day before for overall awards. Both the girls and boys team were fired up and ready to take on the flat but technical terrain gs course! The girls gave it their all to try to win the banner for a second year in a row. Morgan Border put up the fastest time for the team placing 4th for the second consecutive year. Addie Tiller also put in a strong finish at 5th. Jamie Border made an unbelievable one footed recovery to come 14th. Saylor Sprenger came 25th and Stella Price 47th. Olivia Tiller ahd one of the best starts of the day but came a little too close to the gate and ended up crashing and losing her ski. The girls gave it their all and ended up second overall by only 3 points!

The Boys also brought their A game to the Terrain GS. Sam Fuller found redemption after BC Winter Games and placed 8th, Jack Mathisen 19th, Michael Kennedy 30th, Matthew Sayer 38th, and Casey Lake 43rd. The boys were able to hold on to their 5th place team finish.

Nicole Johnston captured 12th on the Terrain GS after an explosive start and very clean run.

For the third consecutive year the girls and boys ski team won the combined banner! They worked very hard all season and are very deserving. They left the competition happy with their results but already setting goals and plans for next year!

The team celebrates its BC Championship.

Kennedy Stars In Penalty Shot Victory Over STA

The senior soccer team pushed their league record to a sparkling 5-0 as they defeated STA 2-1 in a penalty shoot-out yesterday. McKinley Kennedy was the star of the show as she had a very unusual hat-trick. McKinley scored in regulation. She then scored in the penalty shoot-out. And to top things off, she stopped a STA penalty shot to secure the victory. Here is Coach Mulock's report on the great win:

The senior girls' soccer team kicked off this week with a huge victory against the STA Saints. The senior girls are undefeated this year and have played some of the best soccer the coaches have seen in years. The team is number one in the league and had to win today's game to keep their spot at the top.

The first half of the game was a battle for possession. Both teams had close shots on net with no result, leaving the score at half 0-0. The girls' knew the importance of the game and came out with more energy and determination in the second half. Despite a goal from STA within the first 10 minutes the Cavs continued to battle and put pressure on their defensive end. Shortly after, McKinley Kennedy, secured a loose ball about 25 yards out and took a shot sending the ball over the goalie and in the back of the net leaving the game tied.

The game went into a shootout and Sophia Garofolo, Tannis McKay, Megan Mauro all scored for the Cavs. McKinley Kennedy was the hero once again with another great shot on net and a great performance as keeper to seal the deal in the shootout.

The coaches couldn't be happier with the result and they are looking forward to the team's next game on Wednesday against Seycove Secondary. The Cavs remain at the top of the league with 13 points.

Junior Tennis Brings Down A Dynasty

For years, the North Shore junior tennis title has literally been conceded to the Sentinel Spartans from Day 1 of the season. Collingwood's plucky AA squad could never muster quite enough strength to upset the AAA Spartans. Yesterday, the Cavs rose up and defeated Sentinel 6-5 in an unbelievably tense match and brought home the trophy. Here is Coach Vidic's report on the huge win:

After 9 years of finishing runner up, the Junior Tennis Team has won the North Shore title by narrowly beating out Sentinel 6-5. Led by the Robertson brothers on the boys' side and Maya Negris on the girls' side, the team stepped up and won some close matches.

However, none were closer than the deciding match between Grace and Isabel Drouin and the Sentinel girls doubles team. With the overall score in matches tied at 5-5 the winner of girls doubles match would take the title.

The girls' team got off to a hot start taking the first 3 games with some hard ground strokes and consistent serving. However, the Sentinel girls steadied themselves and worked their way back into the match, eventually forcing a tiebreak. There were some very tense moments early on as the girls lost the first 3 points of the tiebreak. However, with some gutsy play they quickly bounced back and tied the score up at 5-5. They next two points were a blur but the loud cheer from the Collingwood crowd confirmed the winner.

Overall, an excellent team effort and a good warm up for the Jr. Provincials next week.

Soccer Cavs Win League Banner

The senior girls' soccer team kept their impressive win-streak alive with a 2-1 penalty shoot-out victory over Seycove yesterday. The league banner was on the line so it was no surprise that the tightly-fought game went to penalties.

Collingwood now finds itself in the 'driver's seat' for the zone playoffs. As the North Shore #1 seed, the Cavs automatically face the Burnaby-New West champion. The winner of this game on May 14 is given an automatic berth to the BC Championships. The loser will get another chance to qualify on Wednesday. Here is Coach Hodal's report on the title-winning victory:

With the League Banner on the line for both teams, our Cavs knew they would be in for a competitive match against a strong Seycove side. An early breakdown in the back caused a turn over and put Seycove up 1 – 0. The Cavs kept their composure and continued to play their game in a contentious and gritty game. We got rewarded shortly after with a long range strike from Megan Mauro who caught their goalie off guard; tying the game at one.

Aggressive play continued for both sides. Megan Mauro, Tannis McKay, Sofia Garofalo, and Hailey Gaida kept the fire going for our team by asserting themselves physically throughout the match. Alexa Bossley and Megan Mauro came close to scoring in the second half; each ringing the crossbar on their attempts at goal. With only a tie needed for the Banner, the team stayed disciplined and kept Seycove chances to a minimum. When Seycove did have some sniffs at the net, Kelsie Stephenson and Rachel Graham made sure they were in a good position to make saves.

The game went to a shootout where, once again, our shooters were clutch and our shootout specialist keeper, McKinley Kennedy, made tremendous saves to keep our 6-game winning streak alive. The team will now play the winner of Burnaby-New West on Monday May 14th for a chance to qualify for the BC's. The team would like to thank all of the people that came out to see the game and support our team. GO CAVS!

Tennis Cavs Looking Powerful With BC Championships On The Horizon

$

The senior tennis team was in a familiar position on Thursday afternoon. Once again, they had advanced to the North Shore Finals, but once again, Sentinel stood in their way of claiming the title. Coach Wong's talented squad gave the Spartans all they could handle but eventually fell 6-5 to their local rivals. However, the team is looking strong and peaking at just the right time as usual. The Cavs will be very hard to beat at the upcoming provincial championships. Here is Coach Wong's report:

With the sun shining, and the worst of the rainy conditions in the past, the varsity tennis team has been busy the past few weeks playing catch-up. After completing their season (4-1), and finishing 2nd in league, the Cavs faced Carson Graham (AAA) in the North Shore Semi-Finals. The Cavs capitalized on their depth, winning the best-of-11 match 10-1. The following day, the Cavs faced their neighboring rival, Sentinel, in the North Shore Finals. The team was hoping to avenge their league match loss (7-0) from two weeks ago.

Fitted in their new hoodies, and rearing to play, the Cavs quickly showed that this was going to be a much tighter match than before. The boys team won both of their opening doubles matches: Lachlan & Jack 6-3, and Conor & Rylan 6-1. The girls were pitted against arguably the top girls team in all of BC. Coach Wong was impressed with his girls consistency from the baseline, and ability to adjust on the fly, but both girls teams were not able to overcome the aggressive attack from Sentinel: Amy & Maya 2-6, Neeki & Isabel 1-6. Nima and Dina made their senior debuts at singles; they faced future NCAA talent, and were able to frustrate their opposition with some long rallies and highlight reel gets. Sentinel took both singles matches, 1-6 and 0-6.

In the crossover matches, the Cavs boys' confidence was clear. Lachlan & Jack won 6-1, and Conor & Rylan was 6-1 against a very good A team. Aleem and Grace took on Sentinel's top squad in the mixed doubles, and played some of their best tennis. Despite the 2-6 loss, Coach Wong was elated with the mixed doubles play. Alas, the Cavs were not able to pull off the upset. Amy & Maya won a back-and-forth battle in their crossover 7-6 (7-4) in front of a raucous crowd. Neeki and Isabel lost 1-6, but they showed that they will be a force to reckon over their next matches. While the team was hoping to break Sentinel's epic 14-year North Shore Champion streak, they found satisfaction in their 6-5 loss. Knowing that only AA competition lies ahead of them, the Cavs are ready to push for another AA provincial banner.

The senior tennis team is looking powerful as usual.

Maya Negris and Amy Young celebrate a hard-won point.

Jack Mathisen smashes a return down the line.

Cavs Crash The SMUS Party And Triumph 34-6

$

The senior rugby team travelled to Victoria for their second-round match in the Stadium Series. The Cavs faced St. Michaels University School (SMUS) who have won the last three AA BC titles. To make things even more difficult, the game was played in front of a large crowd who were at SMUS for their annual alumni homecoming event. It was a fantastic atmosphere as two of the top teams in BC took to the field.

SMUS struck first when their outstanding kicker knocked one across from over 40 meters out. The home crowd was buzzing but they were soon shocked into silence as the Cavs scored three incredible tries in a 12-minute span. All three were set up the power of the Collingwood forwards and then finished clinically by the speed and handling of the Cavs' backs.

Ethan Lucke scored to make it 5-3 for Collingwood. Cole Young then raced down the left sideline to the dismay of the SMUS fans in the hospitality tent to make it 10-3. When Nate Holm then sliced through the SMUS defence to make it 15-3, beer sales began to double as the Blue Jags' fans realized it could be a long afternoon for their team.

SMUS narrowed the deficit to 15-6 with their second penalty kick of the afternoon. However, any momentum the Blue Jags had disappeared when Duncan Bustos dummied and then cut through the SMUS defence and then converted his own try. At halftime, the Cavs were up 22-6.

Unfortunately, Collingwood was not sharp at all to open the second half. Multiple opportunities were squandered and the Cavs found themselves constantly starting from deep in their own end due to the tactical kicking of SMUS.

Finally, Collingwood regained their pattern and this put Cam Bruk into space. Cam drove towards the line carrying multiple SMUS defenders on his back before he reached out with the ball to score a terrific try. Thomas Simon followed this up with the final try of the day when he crashed over. Duncan's conversion capped off the outstanding 34-6 win.

Collingwood will now enter this week as the #1 team in the province in AA. The annual Hatch Shield game is this Friday at Rockridge so the Cavs will be playing another of their arch-rivals in the final league game of the year.

Duncan Bustos had a superb day as he tormented the SMUS defence with a mix of kicks, forward charges and well-spun wide balls that released the pace of the Collingwood backs.

Cam Bruk with ball scored an amazing individual try showcasing his speed and power. Cole Soprovich (in support) had his best game in the 1st XV as he was fast to the breakdowns and moved the ball away quickly.

Cavs Win Hatch Shield

$
0

The Hatch Shield game is always an intense affair and Friday afternoon was no exception. Rockridge might be in the midst of a disappointing season by their very high standards, but they came to play in front of their home crowd and gave Collingwood all they could handle in the first half before the Cavs pulled away in the second stanza to post a convincing 40-0 victory. While the final scoreline was high, the game featured all the hard-hitting that is the trademark of Collingwood vs Rockridge battles.

The Cavs opened the game with a series of imprecise kicks that gifted Rockridge some very good field position. This allowed the Ravens to make an impressive line-break that almost led to the first try of the game. Only a desperation tackle saved the Cavs from an early deficit.

Collingwood slowly worked their way into the game and when they earned a penalty, a quick tap by Duncan Bustos led to a try by Nate Holm. Duncan's fine conversion made it 7-0. Four minutes later, Nate crashed over again and Duncan slotted another conversion to make it 14-0. However, all momentum that had been gained quickly disappeared as the Cavs finished the half with an endless string of penalties.

The halftime talk seemed to settle the Cavs and it only took two minutes before Captain Matt Frost bashed his way through the Ravens' defence to make it 19-0. At the seven-minute mark, Nate complete his hat-trick and Collingwood was in full ascendency.

Rockridge's narrow field had helped to keep Collingwood's swift backs in check, but when Cole Young finally got his hands on the ball, he scored two brilliant tries that brought the pro-Collingwood crowd to its feet. On the first, he used his blazing speed to score under the posts. On the second, he used a stunning series of side-steps to leave Rockridge defenders grasping at air.

Collingwood now will play McMath next week in a Lower Mainland semi-final at Klahanie at 4:00.

Netball Team Repeats As BC Champions

$

When basketball season ends, Super-Coach Morgan McLaughlin does not put the clipboard and whistle away. She heads out to the track to help coach the track and field team and then in her spare time heads up the netball club. Recruiting heavily from the basketball program but willing to take on anyone who wants to learn, Morgan has built the Collingwood netball squad into one that has to be reckoned with at the BC Championships. Here is her report on the team's big win:

If you can run, if you can catch, if you can throw, you can play netball! And with this slogan, the Collingwood Netball Club grew in size this year enabling them to have two teams competing at the BC High School Championships.

The Novice Team consisted of players in grade 8 and 9 who just began playing this year, while the Varsity Team was comprised of the more veteran and experienced players.

The Varsity Team kicked off their tournament action on Friday night with round robin pool play, coming up against Burnaby North, Burnaby South and Alpha Secondary. From the first centre pass, Collingwood was able to control each game with excellent ball movement, timely interceptions, and strong circle play - both on the offensive and defensive end. Emilie H, Hannah S, Rachel N and Emma I all took turns shutting down the opposition's offence in the circle, while Monique K and Muneet G were on fire on offence, shooting in the 90% range. Coming out of the round robin with a record of 3-0 allowed Collingwood to enter the top tier playoff pool on Saturday.

The Novice squad opened their tournament bright and early on Saturday morning and faced some pretty experienced opposition, playing against Moscrop, Burnaby Central, Gleneagle and Burnaby Mountain. Each game, the team improved and learned the intricacies of the sport, managing a round-robin record of 1-3. In playoffs, both games were nail-biters, unfortunately, Collingwood came up a little short, losing the games by 1 and 2 points. Emma I was named MVP for the team as she was fantastic on defence, pulling in rebounds and making the shooters' lives difficult. Soojeong K and Halle A were both consistent shooters for Collingwood, while Jett G and Anisa M helped bring the ball up the floor and made some great defensive plays throughout the tournament. With a bit more experience, these girls will be strong players!

Saturday afternoon brought the Varsity playoffs, and the Cavs were set up to play league champions Moscrop and perennial powerhouse, Burnaby North A. Against Moscrop, the Cavs had to adjust their style of play to a short and sharp passing game to counter Moscrop's aerial style of play. It was close all through the game until Collingwood managed to steal a few of Moscrop's centre passes and convert to push the score and win by 3 towards the end of the second half.

The game for gold, against Burnaby Mountain A, was just as tough, as their GA and GD are provincial level players. The lead went back and forth, and Collingwood found themselves down two in the final frame. Luckily, the Cavs managed to find their poise and stopped making unforced errors. Rachel N and Jacqui K picked off a few errant passes and with quick passing down the floor, Muneet G and Monique K got the job done in the circle, shooting a blistering 90% in the circle. In the last few minutes, the Cavs sealed the deal, winning by 4 points.

With the two wins, Collingwood repeated as Provincial Champions! They are in good standing for next year as well as they are returning the majority of their players. Jacqui Kelly, who started playing netball in grade 8, will be missed as the only graduating player, but we wish her luck in her netball career with the National Team in the summer and at St. Andrews University in Scotland next year!

Emily H and "Mo-Town' K celebrate their gold medal performance.

Emily, Jacqui and Dorreh are all smiles after Collingwood repeated as provincial champions.

Collingwood's golf team added another title to their 2018 list with a 39-stroke victory in the North Shore Championships yesterday. This massive victory bodes well for the upcoming BC Championships. The Cavs won silver last year at the provincials but are looking for gold this year. Here is Coach Payne's report:

The good ship Collingwood continues to roll along its path to the Provincial Championships. With one of our key players unable to play (Sandee Park), due to AP Exams, the team brought in an up-and-comer – William Zhang. William stepped up and held his own.

We finished the day with all five golfers shooting in the 70's. No other school was even close to challenging us on this day. The team was hotter than the weather. 10th consecutive NS AA Championship and the only school to win the overarching NS Golf Championship since its inception.

Girls Soccer Faces 'Do Or Die' Game Today

$

The senior girls' soccer team had an amazing regular season finishing with a sparkling 6-0 record. This earned them a spot in the North Shore-Burnaby New West final on Monday. A win against St. Thomas More would have earned them a berth in the BC Championships. Despite taking a 1-0 lead late in the first half, the Cavs fell to a very strong STM squad 3-1 and now find themselves in a must-win game today against Sutherland.

In Monday's game, the Cavs faced not only a tough and hard-nosed STM team but also an incredibly hot day on the Fen Burdett turf. It was scorching and both teams subbed liberally trying to keep their players fresh. Perhaps Collingwood felt the heat more than the STM team as the Cavs constantly lost battles for the 50-50 balls.

The Cavs did take the lead when McKinley Kennedy put an terrific through-ball to Tannis McKay. Tannis raced forward and drilled a shot into the top left-hand corner. It was a strike of pure class.

Sadly, the Cavs allowed STM to score right before halftime on a free kick. The second half opened badly as well as STM scored off a corner kick to go up 2-1. The Cavs seemed to wilt after this and were not able to produce any real scoring opportunities in the second half. A late goal sealed the deal for STM.

Collingwood now plays Sutherland today at 3:00pm at Fen Burdett. With a win, the team will make history and be the first Collingwood girls' soccer team to make the BC Championships.

North Shore Track Championships - Cavs In Action

The North Shore Track and Field Championships were held yesterday at Swangard Stadium in Burnaby. Here is Coach McLaughlin's report on our Collingwood track stars:

It was a beautiful sunny day for the North Shore Track and Field Championships and under the bluebird sky, the Collingwood athletes found their stride and made significant improvements in their events.

The North Shore finals are the qualifying event for the BC High School Championships, and Collingwood saw some of the athletes earn top place finishes in multiple events. Perhaps more importantly though are the Personal Bests that the athletes were able to accomplish.

Competing athletes whose times will be put forward in the Open Zone Provincials are:

Colton Sun, our lone male athlete, improved his 200m time and moved from his 7th seed to a 5th place finish and a time of 24.80.

The Junior Girls 4x400 relay team of Jett, Amelia, Justine, and Eloise had an exciting race, improving from 7th seed to finishing 4th, shaving off several seconds between their qualifying run and finals.

The Senior Girls 4x100 relay team of Rachel N, Misa Y, Nicole P, Addie T also improved from their qualifying time, knocking off 4 seconds to run the race in 57.65.

Finishing top-three and making through automatically to provincials were:

Alicia Ranahan made it to provincials for her 800m third-place finish of 2.25.62.

Soccer Cavs Make History With Comeback Win

The senior girls' soccer program spent many years in the proverbial sporting wilderness when it first started. It was often seen as a chance for recreational fun rather than a competitive challenge. In the past few years, the Collingwood program has changed completely. Two years ago, the Cavs won the league title. However, winning the league is not a ticket to the BC Championships, you must win one of two playoff games to earn the berth.

Two years ago, two narrow losses saw the Cavs miss out on a glorious chance to make the provincial championships. This year, the team would not be denied and defeated Sutherland 2-1 in a thrilling overtime match to make history and earn a trip to the BC Championships in Kamloops at the end of this month. Coach Hodal's game report will appear shortly.

The 2018 girls' soccer team is off to the BC Championships. It will be the first time Collingwood has ever participated in this event.

Sophia Garofalo was a true tiger in Monday's loss to STM. Today, she scored the winning goal two minutes into the first overtime period.

Meg Mauro scored in the last minute of play today from a wild goalmouth scramble to force overtime.

Riley Kennedy may only be in Grade 8 but she has already earned the plenty of playing time in the playoffs.
