Debbie A Downer - Aussie Rugby Tour Ends With A Splash

After devastating a huge portion of Northern Queensland, the tail-end of Cyclone Debbie touched down on Australia's Gold Coast on Thursday. This meant that it was a rainy and blustery end to Collingwood's 2017 rugby tour. When 600mm of rain falls in just over one day, it's hard to continue with any plans for a practice or jet-boating. However, the rugby squad is not one to let a little rain get it down. The team rolled with the punches and simply trudged through endless puddles and streams of water as it made its way over to a local gym for an indoor practice and then over to a mall for an afternoon movie and final team dinner.

While the final day might not have been ideal, the 2017 Australia Tour was a huge hit on and off the field. The junior team posted an excellent 2-2 record and were very close to winning their final game as well. The senior team went 0-4, but in every game displayed signs of brilliance. All four losses came against quality opposition so the team will be ready for two big games coming up next week. The Cavs open league play on Tuesday against Tupper before facing Brentwood at home on Friday afternoon in a huge BC AA ranking game.

While rain played havoc throughout the tour and caused the cancellation of the matches in Sydney, the boys simply refused to let a little (or a lot) of moisture get them down. Rain on the go-kart track simply meant that there were more crashes, which seemed to bring great joy to everyone. There is nothing so satisfying as seeing another driver fly off the track and into some mud. The muddy clothes were quickly exchanged for dry ones but the smiles lasted for hours.

On the second last day of tour, the team spent the morning on the practice paddock with the sun bearing down on them. After a rousing 'running yards' Kyle Cup competition had everyone sweating hard, the team then raced off for who would get first choice on the newly bought pro-rugby singlets. This brought out the competitive fire in the boys as they sprinted hard over and over again. In the end, everyone walked away with a great new rugby singlet.

When the rain appeared later that afternoon at Wet n Wild World, no one cared a lick as everyone was too busy running around soaking themselves in the many amazing rides. As usual the 'Loop de Loop' Tube-Ride was the major hit as all the boys loved being flushed down a looping tube at breakneck speed.

While everyone was disappointed that we did not get more Aussie sun, the defining factor of the tour was that the boys were not going to let the weather get them down. They simply adjusted and got on with life and had endless fun as a group. As usual, there were rave reviews from all the host parents as well as all airline and service staff the team encountered in their three weeks away. Great work, boys!

On Tuesday, the Cavs played their final game of tour at All Saints. On Thursday morning, the All Saints fields and parking lot were covered in water from Cyclone Debbie.

The final team dinner took a sweet turn when the pizza restaurant suddenly brought out huge balls of candy floss for the boys.

Brooms Come Out Early For Tennis Team

The tennis team kicked off their season with a clean sweep of the Rockridge Ravens yesterday. Coach Wong's troops blew away their local rivals in quick fashion. Here is Coach Wong's game report:

According to the legendary Coach Rose, the Senior Tennis Team has such a bright future that he had to put sunglasses on to watch their match yesterday. Coach Rose came out to cheer on the team, as the Cavs defeated Rockridge 7-0 to kick-off the 2017 season.

The girls are returning a stacked line-up that is captained by singles star Neeki Alavi. She began the season with a 6-0 victory. Maya Negris and Amy Young won 6-0 in their A Doubles Match, and looked to be in mid-season form. Grade 8 rookie Liz Mathisen, and Dina Rahimian won by default. Dina paired up with Lauren Alderson in an exhibition match and were up 4-0 when the match was called.

On the boys side, the team lost three of their starting five members from last year's championship team. Coach Wong has been pleased with his returning veterans and is elated with a slew of new members that are making an instant impact. The young team, comprised of only one grade 12, were impressive in their season debut. Team captain Isaac Davies won 6-0. The doubles teams of Conor Robertson/ Jack Mathisen and Imraan Karmali/ Aleem Karmali each won 6-1. Nima Danaei and Maisie Hastings played to a 6-3 victory in mixed doubles.

The Cavs are set to play against AA rival Mulgrave on Wednesday. The match is scheduled for 3:30pm at Murdo Frazer, pending on the weather.

Team captain Isaac Davies will be attempting to win his 5th straight BC AA title this spring.

Cavs Cage Tigers In Rugby Season Opener

The senior rugby team played some very tough opposition on their recent Australia rugby tour so it is no surprise that the team opened league play with a convincing 45-12 victory over the Tupper Tigers. Although the Cavs were not as sharp as their coaches would have liked, the team had more than enough firepower to defeat Tupper.

Collingwood was quick to go on the attack right from the opening kick-off but a series of handling errors inside the Tupper 22m line prevented them from scoring on three different occasions inside the first 10 minutes. Finally, Tyler Preston bashed over on a #8 pick-up and Collingwood had a 7-0 lead after the Cam Bird conversion.

Cole Young followed this up with a great try that came off some fantastic handling from both forwards and backs. Duncan Bustos added the conversion on this try and the Cavs were up 14-0. Cam Bruk scored at the 20-minute mark again after some great teamwork and the rout was on. When Carter Proc added another try before halftime, Collingwood went into the break with a 26-0 lead.

The Cavs quickly padded their lead with two intercept tries in the first 10 minutes of play. Carter and Cam both scored their second tries of the game. Cam Bird converted both of these. Collingwood's final try came when Tyler went over for his second tally of the day.

The Cavs now play Brentwood College this Friday at 4:00. This game is part of the BC High School Rugby Stadium Series so it is am important ranking game for the team.

Cam Bird has been playing great rugby for the Cavs at both scrum-half and fullback.

The field conditions were ugly. The game was ugly. However, in the end, the senior rugby team will take their ugly win over Brentwood and move on. The important thing is that the Cavs found a way to overcome a terrible first half and then play good enough rugby to win an important ranking game that could have great bearing later in the year when it comes to provincial rankings.

The first half was completely dominated by Brentwood. The Cavs spent 80% of first half playing defence. Anytime, they took possession of the ball, they turned it over through losing the ball in contact. To make matters worse, the team was also guilty of numerous infractions and were rightly being penalized off the park by the referee. At halftime, the Cavs were lucky to be only 5-3 down.

In the second half, Collingwood finally found their offensive mojo. First of all, they played much smarter rugby by putting the ball deep into Brentwood territory and forcing them into penalties and mistakes. This led to Cam Bird's second penalty kick of the game, which gave the Cavs a 6-5 lead.

Duncan Bustos started to mix running his big forwards along with crashing centers Carter Proc and Cam Bruk. This started to pay dividends and the Collingwood slowly moved into the ascendency. Unfortunately, some good scoring opportunities were squandered, which kept BCS in the game.

Finally, the Cavs won some quick ball and moved it wide. Jaxson Vickerstaff appeared in the backline and fed the ball to Ethan Lucke who had more than enough speed to leg it into the end-zone.

Now up 11-5, the Cavs continued to press but were unable to truly put BCS away. Once again, ball in contact issues reared its ugly head. However, good team defence kept Brentwood at bay and the Cavs held on for the win.

Forwards Jack Allen, Matt Frost, Max Moyes and Bruce Qin all had big games for the Cavs.

Duncan Bustos tries to elude a Brentwood tackler.

Max McKee rises high to win the Cavs some excellent line-out ball. Max has been one of the main reasons that the team has been so dominant in line-outs this season.

Track Season Now Underway

After a power outage closed down Handsworth last week and prevented the first track meet of the year, the Collingwood track stars finally got a chance to strut their stuff yesterday. Coach Ayotte sends in this report on a terrific start to the year:

The track and field team had their first exhibition meet at Handsworth on Tuesday, April 11th and it was a great start to the year! Zaref Anderson, Toby Li and Victor Qian all ran very well in the junior boys 200 meter and Bella Hallam was fourth overall in the senior girls 100 meter hurdles!

In the 800 meter, Kai O'Krane was at the front of his bantam boys pack and Tucker Lake ran his very first 800 meter in Canada in the junior boys category and ran very smoothly.

In the junior girls category, Alicia Ranahan placed 5th overall; this was a very tough pack and Alicia was running against girls a year older than she. In the senior boys race, Casey Lake was 7th overall in his debut 800 in a really strong senior boys field and teammate Charlotte Campbell was 6th overall.

Jett Gleason was stellar with a bronze medal winning performance in the bantam girls 80 meter hurdles. She's been training but had never raced and the team is very proud of her.

Caitlin Gordon was outstanding in the senior girls shot put and won the gold medal! The next best throw was 1.74 meters behind Caitlin's throw of 8.18m, which is an amazing accomplishment!

There were some major players missing due to races this weekend as well as band festivals, so the team should be back in full force next week. The next meet is Wednesday, April 12th and then another on Thursday, April 13th (throwers only). The last exhibition meet will be Tuesday, April 18th at Handsworth and then the preliminary qualifiers begin the week after that.

The coaches are happy with the start to the year and are hopeful for another strong showing at Provincials this year in June!

Charlotte Campbell is now competing in her fifth sport this year for Collingwood. She has competed in cross-country, field hockey, swimming, basketball and now track!

Collingwood's track stars enjoy a sunny afternoon at the first meet of the year yesterday.

Senior Girls Prep For Playoffs With Great Weekend At WPGA

The senior girls' basketball team played some terrific basketball this weekend at the West Point Grey tournament. The team's 2nd place finish was a great result and will help them tremendously as they start their North Shore playoffs on Monday night at Seycove. Here is Coach McLaughlin's tournament report:

Despite the snow storm, the Cavs headed out to Point Grey to take part in the West Point Grey Academy's Wolves Invitational Tournament. The tournament was a great opportunity to play against some different faces in preparation for the North Shore playoffs.

The first round match up was against a strong and taller Elgin Park Orcas. The Cavs trailed for the majority of the game, but never by more than six. The Orcas had the advantage on the boards, but the Cavs had the advantage of speed - using their press in the second half they were able to create some steals and convert on the fast breaks - so much so, that they took the lead in the fourth quarter 40-36. However, the Orcas would not quit and as the Cavs struggled from the free throw line, they were able to force over time at 42-42. In the extra frame, Eglin scored first, but that was their last basket, as the Cavs tied the game, went ahead, and held on to a 46-44 win. Charlotte Campbell was named player of the game for her clutch shots down the stretch.

With the win, the Cavs moved into the Semis to face the Pemberton Devils. Once again, the Cavs faced opposition that was taller across the board - so boxing out was a priority. In the first frame, both teams struggled to find their rhythm and the Cavs had trouble with the Pemberton press - the score was 10-9 for the Devils at the end of the quarter. The second quarter was very much the same, with the teams exchanging baskets, and the Cavs not being able to take advantage of Pemberton's top player having to sit most of the second with foul trouble. However, the Cavs were able to turn things around in the third quarter going on a 13-2 run and finishing off the third ahead 38-29 as Nikki Sutton-MacGregor connected for 6 of her game high 13 points. The fourth quarter continued in a similar fashion for the Cavs as they were able to cause Pemberton into foul trouble and score off of steals. When the final buzzer went, the Cavs were victorious 52-38. Hazel Atkins was given player of the game honors for her outstanding rebounding and scoring her season high of 7 points.

The finals were set for Saturday afternoon against a complete unknown - Cornerstone Christian Cougars from Lynden Washington. The Cougars had run through the tournament, beating their opposition by a margin of 30 points heading into the finals. The Cavs knew that they would be in tough as the Cougars had quite the size advantage.

The Cavaliers began the game undaunted and unintimidated, but the referees were calling the game very tight and both Isabelle Gaglardi-Kreider and Kayleigh Garland were in foul trouble in the first quarter. Missing two guards, the Cavs had to shuffle their line up and play with some different looks - however, the Cougar's best player #11 was also in trouble with three fouls and sat out the whole second quarter, when the Cavs were able to make use of their pressure defense and push the score to take a 13 point lead into half-time.

However, the energy that the Cavs had come out with in the second dissipated as they were out rebounded and Cornerstone went on their own run to take a 5 point lead into the final frame. It was a battle through the fourth as the teams traded baskets, and were able to foul out the difference maker #11. Struggling from the free throw line and a couple of missed layups, the Cavs were unable to close the gap until the last few seconds of the game.

Amanda Finnie was fouled shooting a three with seconds left on the clock. Amanda nailed the first two of three and attempted to gently miss in hopes of a quick put back by one of the Cav posts, but, the shot rolled into the hoop. The Cougars called a time out to advance the ball to half and took away any hopes of a last second shot for the Cavs - the final score being 55-53.

Player of the Game for Collingwood was Tiana Wong for her consistent distribution of the ball and great defence. The tournament all-star for the Cavs was Kayleigh Garland as she had to battle some pretty big bigs over the weekend and she was a consistent contributor on the scoreboard and playing through nagging injuries.

Overall, it was a successful weekend as the Cavs learned important lessons on how to win and finish out games. Every Cavalier had good moments and contributed to the team's success.

The Cavs now play Monday in the North Shore Semifinals against the #2 Provincially ranked Seycove Seyhawks. Depending on the outcomes on Monday, Collingwood will play against either Windsor or Bodwell on Wednesday.

Cavs Crush Cambie

The senior rugby team scored 30 seconds into the game and never looked back as they defeated Cambie 72-19 this past Thursday. Despite the fact that the team was without four starters, the Cavs were far too strong for Cambie. When Collingwood scored its fifth try by the 13-minute mark, wholesale substitutions were made. This made it a much better game, but Collingwood's 'finishers' were keen to make an impact and they played good rugby throughout the rest of the game.

Ethan Lucke and Sean Assadi led the way with two tries each. Duncan Bustos, Adam Lewis, Ollie White, Tyler Preston, Rohan Nayyar, Eric Waterman and Tate Venier all added single tries. Cam Bird chipped in 12 points on six conversions.

The Cavs now face Sentinel this Thursday at Sentinel.

Grade 10 Rugby Team Wins League Opener

On the recent Australia Rugby Tour, the junior team went 2-2. With this great showing in mind, it is no surprise that the team has performed very well at the outset of the season. Here is a report from Coach Hall on the team's first three games back in Canada:

The Junior Boy's Rugby team has had a busy start to their season since returning from the Australia tour with three games in their first couple of weeks home.

The first game back in Canada was on April 6th against arch-rivals Rockridge. After raining all week, the skies cleared for a couple of hours in the afternoon just in time for kickoff. Collingwood got off to a quick start in this game, scoring in the opening minutes. Rockridge responded well, however, and tied the score at 7 after a 50 metre run by one of their strong centers. At this point, it looked like it would be a back and forth game.

Soon, however, Collingwood would start to take control. Some powerful runs by Thomas Simon and Nate Holm in the centers and some dominant work by the likes of Thomas Foote, Joel Abdel-Barr and Kirk Fuller in the forwards, saw Collingwood lead at half-time by a score of 28-7. Although things got a bit sloppy in the second half, Graeme Neill-Klein found a couple of gaps in the defense to score two nice individual tries. Graeme's kicking was also on all day, as he went 6 for 6 on conversions to score a total of 22 points on his own! Final score was 42-7.

On April 11th, the team traveled across to the island to play against Brentwood in an exhibition game. Again, we were lucky with the weather on this day as it was sunny and clear for much of it. After trying to run off the 'ferry legs' in warm-up, Collingwood again got off to a quick start with much of the possession for the first 15 minutes of the game. Despite having the ball almost this entire time, Brentwood's defense proved tough to crack and many opportunities were wasted. On one of Brentwood's first possessions, they managed to get the ball out to the winger who went 50m for a try against the flow of play.

Going into half-time, the score remained 5-0 Brentwood despite, Collingwood controlling the play. Finally in the second half, Collingwood managed to find the end-zone with tries by Thomas Foote and Alex Ferriera. Collingwood had a 12-5 lead going into the last 10 minutes of play. Brentwood, however, began to claw back and used their big forwards well in combination with their speedy backs out wide. After some good defence, Brentwood finally scored to bring the score to 12-10 with five minutes to go.

A yellow card for a high tackle, saw Collingwood have to play one man short for the last bit of the game. This proved costly as Brentwood scored another try in the last minute to go ahead 17-12. Collingwood responded by having possession of the ball on Brentwood's goal line for the next couple of minutes going into injury time but could not manage to get one across. A disappointing loss but hopefully some good lessons learned on the day.

Two days later, Collingwood were back at it against West Vancouver on an extremely muddy field at Lucas Centre. After a vicious hail storm during warm up the boys were fired up and ready to go! In very wet conditions, Collingwood did extremely well to maintain possession of the ball throughout the game and proved to be too much for West Van.

This was a great effort by everyone who took to the field on the day including players such as Casra Mohammedrezi, Wesley Caplan, Tom Yang and Joey Ficcoceli who did a lot of work in the forwards to secure position of the ball. In the backs, Brent Anderson and Linus Hartner had some great moments in their season debuts, while David Polevoy did well playing in his first game on the wing. Lucas Okano controlled things well from scrum-half and looked dangerous when he subbed in as full-back. All in all, a strong performance from Collingwood in the 49-0 win!

Next up is Carson Graham on Tuesday and the Provincial 7's tournament on Friday at St. George's.

Despite The Rain, The Track Team Continues To Shine

The track team has been suffering through the awful spring weather like all our other outdoor athletes. Cold and wet weather is particularly troublesome to track athletes as the fear of a muscle-pull is constant for runners, while slick surfaces are a definite deterrent to personal-best performances in throwing events. Despite the terrible weather, Collingwood's track-stars are persevering and performing very well. Here is Coach Ayotte's report on last week's results:

The track and field team had two other meets last week after their Tuesday exhibition meet. The meet on Wednesday, April 12th was to make up for the cancelation of the meet on the previous Thursday, when Handsworth lost power. Because it was a last minute addition to the schedule, many of our athletes were unable to make the Wednesday meet. We did, however, have some solid performances from those that were able to switch their schedules around to attend.

Bella Hallam was 2nd in the senior girls racewalk and Amelia Bradecamp and Jett Gleason placed in the top of their grade 8 packs in the 100 meter. Kai O'Krane was fourth in the bantam boys 400 and Alicia Ranahan displayed a graceful stride in the 1500 to place in the top 6 in a VERY tough field.

On Thursday, April 13th the monsoon and hail storm didn't keep our throwers from putting in some very respectable performances. Highlights included Joe Harris placing 6th in the javelin and Caitlin Gordon placing 3rd in javelin and 2nd in discus. Olivia Tiller should be proud of her throws at her first meet out and Coach McLaughlin looks forward to seeing these throwers improve even more!

The last exhibition meet takes place Tuesday, April 18th. Next week, the preliminary qualifying meets for the North Shores begin on Tuesday, April 25th and Thursday, April 27th and continue into the next week.

Three of Collingwood's top throwers - Olivia Tiller, Casey Thomas-Burns and Caitlin Gordon.
