Double Trouble At Cav Classic - Both Junior And Senior Girls Win
For the first time in Collingwood history, the senior boys' and girls' basketball teams have combined to run a joint tournament. This meant that the teams were scheduled to play back-to-back. However, at the last minute a girls' team dropped out so the junior girls' team was pressed into action. Thus, the opening game featured the junior girls versus Crofton's senior team. If the junior team was intimidated, it did not show as they came away with an impressive overtime victory. The senior girls followed this up with a thrashing of West Van. Sadly, the boys could not make it a hat-trick of victories as they fell to Carson Graham.
The loss to Carson was very disappointing as the Cavs were poor in many ways. Their shooting percentage was incredibly low from the outside and their transition defence was almost non-existent as they constantly allowed Carson players to slip behind them for breakaway lay-ups. Despite this the Cavs were still in the game at halftime. However, the Eagles blew the game open in the 3rd quarter when the Cavs failed to record a point for the first seven minutes. Samir Damji gave the Cavs a glimmer of hope when he nailed three 3-pointers in a row, but Collingwood could not overcome the deficit. Samir Damji and Brodie Jacobs both scored 17 points to lead the Cavs.
Here is Coach McLaughlin's game report on the two girls' games:
The Girls' division of the Cav Classic started off seeing the Junior girls step up to fill a last minute drop-out. The Junior Cavs were up for the challenge of playing against senior teams and didn't back down from the competition. Crofton House Falcons came out ready to compete against the It was a close game, seeing the lead change multiple times leading up to half time. The Junior Cavs used their athleticism to put pressure on the Crofton Guards and made some steals, but some sloppy play and passes allowed Crofton to convert for enough points to have the score tied at half time.
The second half was a repeat of the first, no team lead by more than 5, and the lead switched back and forth six times. Heading down the stretch, the Junior Cavs had to make a late run to bring the score within one. After a series of free throws, the score was tied - the game headed to overtime. In overtime the Junior Cavs took charge from the tip and took the lead, but with about 2:15 left in the game, the Wolves made it interesting and brought it back within 4. However, the Jr Cavs kept their cool, and managed to seal the deal, closing out the game with a win. Muneet Gill led the way with a spectacular 32 points.
Following on the heels of the Juniors, came the marquee match of the day - the Senior Girls, with a re-match against West Van. Despite West Van getting out to a quick lead, the Lady Cavs settled into their grove and brought the lead and momentum back onto their side. The seniors worked to move the ball quickly to stretch the West Van zone, and managed to connect on some of their outside shots. However, at the start of the third, the difference maker was turning up the intensity with the implementation of their press and continuously mixing up their defenses. The Cavs found the bottom of the hoop on some inside looks and fast break layups off of the steals of Tiana Wong, Isabelle Gaglardi-Kreider, and Amanda Finnie. Going into the half, the Senior Cavs had a decent lead of 23-7. The second half began with the "TANCK" attack - and the Cavs set the pace for the first few minutes. However, they became a little complacent and allowed the Highlanders to double their score in the third frame, leading 38-16 going into the fourth.
In the fourth, all the Cavs got opportunities to leave a mark on the game - Bridget Campbell turned on the aggression, ripping in rebounds and stepping to get steals, Alexa Bossley challenged the Highlander guards to use their best ball handling skills, Savin Narwal chased down big rebounds. When the final buzzer sounded, the Cavs came away with a 42-25 win. For the third time, Tiana Wong was a few stats away from a triple double getting 9 steals, 5 assists, 11 rebounds, and 8 points. Kayleigh Garland contributed 7 points and 12 rebounds, while Isabelle Gaglardi-Kreider and Amanda Finnie netted 8 and 10 points respectively.
The second round of the tourney continues tomorrow with the Senior girls playing at 10:30 and the Junior Girls playing at 2:15.
Amanda Finnie fights through a West Van defender for two points.
Izzy Gaglardi-Kreider on the attack.
Muneet Gill exploded for 32 points in the junior girls' win over Crofton.
Duncan Bustos leads the Cavs fast-break.
Samir Damji was red-hot in the second half. Samir's three straight's 3's were the highlight of the night for the Cavs.
Senior Cavs Gelling At Just The Right Time
After a tough run throughout their tournament schedule and the start of regular season play, the senior boys' basketball team has finally found another gear and is starting to truly compete in games as Coach Wong always hoped they would. Their timing could not have been better as playoffs start this week. The Cavs will be fighting hard to defend their Howe Sound Championship starting on Wednesday. Here is a report from Coach Wong:
The Senior Boys (7-19) are playing their best basketball of the season heading into the playoff stretch. The Cavs played both Elphinstone and Seycove to the final possession to wrap up league play. In front of a raucous home crowd for Seniors Night, that included life-size Max McKee heads, the Cavs sent a clear message that they can compete with the best teams on the North Shore.
After suffering a devastating 96-64 loss one week earlier to Seycove, the Cavs came up just short, in a heated rematch, 78-76. Brodie Jacobs had a heroic performance, notching a team-high 36 points and 10 rebounds, and shooting a blistering 5-6 from behind the arc. Duncan Bustos had 11 points, and Grade 9 Lochlan Collins finished with 10 points.
Coach Wong is elated with the distribution of scoring of late. In league play, Jacobs is averaging a team best 17.3ppg, followed by Collins 9.8ppg, Bustos 9.2ppg and Damji 9.0ppg. Each night, someone can step-up, and heading into the playoffs, the team is counting on their senior play-off experience to lead them on their Howe Sounds Playoff run.
The Cavs take on Whistler in a 4th vs. 5th first round Howe Sound AA Playoff Match on Wednesday, February 15th. Whistler topped Collingwood 70-59 on January 26th. The Cavs will need a big performance from Ryan Sieg to pull off a win. The last time the two team faced-off, Sieg was dominant, scoring 12 points and pulling down 14 rebounds. The game is part of a playoff triple header at Carson Graham, with tip-off at 6:15pm. It's a do-or-die game, with the winner taking on STA the following night. The Howe Sounds Playoff Tournament has a rich 50 year history. There is a $5 cost for adults and a $3 cost for students.
Ryan Sieg has been playing some inspired basketball lately. For the Cavs to go on a playoff run, they will need some big performances from him.

Storm Warning Cancelled - Cavs Beat Whistler
Three weeks ago, the Whistler Storm blew into town and sent the senior boys' basketball team into a brief downward spiral when they upset the Cavs on Collingwood's home court. This defeat was tough on both the boys and the coaching staff, but the team's strong finish to the regular season gave Coach Wong hope that the Cavs would be 'storm-busters' in the first round of the playoffs. The Cavs proved their coach right with an outstanding 75-62 victory over Whistler yesterday. Here is Coach Wong's report:
The Cavs (8-19) began their playoff run with a 75-62 win over Whistler. Brodie Jacobs hit a clutch three pointer at the end of the first half to give the team a 37-28 half-time lead. The team carried its momentum into the second half. Coach Salehi was happy with the team's effort, singling out Ryan Sieg for his strong playmaking passes and Alec Coleman for his gritty rebounding.
Kane Vidalin played his best game of the year, finishing with 14 points and 5 rebounds, and earning Player of the Game Honors. He was able to use his long wing-span on defense that led to several momentum changing steals for end to end lay-ups. Jacobs continued his all-star play, picking up 23 points and adding 11 rebounds, including several highlight reel finishes. Lochlan Collins had a big second half-performance, hitting three of his four three-pointers in the second half.
Before the game, Jacobs and Samir Damji were recognized as Howe Sound AA League All-Stars. Tonight the Cavs take on STA to kick-off the semi-finals at 7:45am. Given the double knock-out format, the Cavs will be back in action on Tuesday at STA. Big Week of Basketball at Wentworth
This week, many of the Wentworth teams had their final ISEA playdays around the city. The playdays are a great opportunity to wrap up the season for the grade 5s and 6s as they don't compete for a league championships. It is a celebration of the season and a chance to reconnect with players from other teams and to just have a fun day of sport.
On Wednesday, the grade 6 boys made their way to the Richmond Oval. They ended up being shorthanded due to quite a few illnesses but with 11 boys, they split into 2 squads and competed all day. Overall, they improved their skills under the leadership of Mr. Style and Mr. Sullivan. The boys are getting hooked on basketball and the team aspects of the game. We look forward to seeing them compete in grade 7.
On Thursday, The grade 5 girls were at Mulgrave where they won 7 out of 8 games. Great job girls and huge kudos to Ms. Nielsen and Ms. Bombini on a job well done coaching this group of girls. We can't wait to see what they have in store next year!
Also yesterday, The grade 6 girls were at the Richmond Oval for the day. They fought hard all season, never giving up and improved their skills and knowledge of the game. There is plenty of potential and athleticism and we cant wait to see them take the reigns next year in grade 7 when they compete in league play.
The grade 7B boys defeated Meadowridghe 36-28. They were down 10 points after the 1st quarter but with the likes of Tanner J. and sharp shooter Issac P., they boys fought back and took control of the game by half time. This was an awesome victory and will definitely give them some momentum going into their ISEA championships on Monday.
Lastly, the grade 5 boys were at Southridge School competing in their ISEA playday. The squad was split into 3 teams led by Coaches Cavalluzzo, Sung-Cole, and guest coach Allen. The day started off well with 2 out of 3 teams easily defeating St. George's and one team narrowly losing. All three teams displayed excellent skill and a solid grasp of the game. Both Mr. Cav and Ms. Sung-Cole did an outstanding job teaching the boys all season long on the basics but also about commitment, sportsmanship, and most importantly character. The season isn't over though as they gr. 5s will take on Vancouver College on Feb. 21st in an exhibition game at Wentworth in the Katz-Tefler Gym.
Thank you everyone for you continued support throughout the season, especially the parents and teachers.

Grade 8 Girls Win ISA's - Boys Finish 4th
The Grade 8 girls' basketball team were in fine form this weekend as they won the ISA Championship. The Cavs used their rebounding dominance and highly effective pass-and-cut offence to take home the title. The boys' tournament was also being hosted by Collingwood. The boys avenged an opening game loss to West Point Grey with a resounding victory over them in the Consolation Final.
The girls opened the tournament against St. John's. It soon became clear that they were much too strong for the Eagles and they established a huge lead and then romped to victory.
This set up a semi-final against a tough Southridge team. The Cavs' dominance on the offensive glass provided them with ample opportunities for easy baskets, but a lack of finish really hampered any chance of blowing the game open. Meanwhile, Southridge's outstanding outside shooting was keeping the in the game. In the end, the Cavs managed to hold on for victory. Special mention must go to Liz Mathisen who stepped into the point guard position for this game and did a fantastic job.
In the final, the Cavs faced St. Michaels University School from Victoria. SMUS had easily won their first two games of the tournament so it shaped up to be an epic final. Collingwood was bolstered by the addition of star point guard Sara Fraser. Sara had missed the first two games due to a swim meet.
The Cavs got off to a great start. The pass-and-cut offence was giving them great looks inside almost every trip down the court. Although they established an early lead, they were once again guilty of missing too many easy shots, which allowed SMUS to stick around.
SMUS made some halftime adjustments and when they got on an early 3rd quarter roll, it was suddenly a tight ballgame. However, the Cavs' terrific rebounding once again saved the day. Stella Guernsey, Heather Royle, Seli Edstrand and Sara were rebounding machines. Rachel Chete then made some crucial lay-ups off the fast-break late in the game to secure the victory.
On the boys' side, the Cavs opened the tournament on Thursday afternoon with a loss to WPGA. This meant they did not take the court until late on Friday afternoon against Fraser Academy. The Cavs had lost to Fraser the week before at the St. John's tournament, but this time they dominated play and posted an easy victory.
On Saturday morning, the Cavs faced an imposing physical side from SMUS. However, it soon became clear that the Blue Jags could not run the floor with the Cavs. Once again, Collingwood posted a big win.
In the re-match against WPGA, Collingwood got off to a great early start. This seemed to take the Wolves by surprise. The Cavs were up by as many as 18 points late in the 4th quarter before the Wolves went on an 11-0 run. This may have added a few more grey hairs to Coach Vidic's beard, but in the end the Cavs were victorious.
Rachel Chete scored some crucial 4th quarter points to ensure a Collingwood victory.
Arthur Na has been one of Coach Vidic's 'go-to-guys' all year long.

Alpine Team Sweeps North Shore Ski Championships
Collingwood's powerhouse alpine team won two provincial banners last year. Last week at the North Shore Championships, they proved that they will once again be a contender for provincial glory as both the boys' and girls' ski teams won North Shore titles. Here is Coach Ramsden's report:
The Alpine Team showed their dominance yet again this Friday at the North Shore Championships in Whistler. The athletes battled through icy conditions with limited visibility at times due to rolling fog. Both the novice and experienced ski and snowboarders had notable results. For the Boys experienced ski division, Collingwood swept the podium with Peter Konigsmann taking the win, Mark Konigsmann coming second and Edward Coleman rounding out the podium in third.
In the girls experienced ski division, Grade 8 athlete Jamie Border won the race with a stellar performance where she beat athletes that ranged from Grade 8 through 12. Addie Tiller also had a notable performance with the remainder of the girls team skiing strong. Both the girls and boys experienced ski team won the North Shore banner this year which also qualifies them for Provincials.
On the experienced snowboarding side, Emily Bugeja had a breakout performance and fought hard to reach second place. Jason Tang also had a personal best result securing 4th place in the boys snowboarding category.
The novice athletes continued their significant improvement this season by posting many personal bests. Kevin Wang won the Junior Boys Snowboard division and the Grade 8 girls had a strong showing taking 4 of the top 5 spots.
The coaching staff is proud of all the athletes that competed this Friday as many reached new personal bests. We also look forward to competing at Provincials March 1st – 3rd in Whistler.
Collingwood's alpine team is looking good again this year.
Peter Konigsmann took home the gold in the boys' experienced race.
Emily Bugeja had a great day finishing 2nd in the girls' experienced snowboard race.
Edward Coleman is looking to cap off his high school alpine career with yet another BC team championship.
