Cavs Sweep Season Series With Highlanders

The senior girls' basketball team defeated the West Van Highlanders 52-23 last night to sweep the season series against their local rival. The Cavs seem to be humming along very nicely since their return from Europe. Here is Coach McLaughlin's game report:

Tonight, we faced off against the West Van Highlanders in the final game of their home season, so it was their Seniors Night. Coach Dignum for West Van presented his girls with lovely tokens of appreciation to his six seniors for their contributions to the West Van Basketball program.

Since last meeting West Van before Christmas, the Highlanders added several new players to their roster, significantly expanding the depth of their bench. The Cavs line-up was also a little different this evening, as starting forward Nikki Sutton MacGregor was on the injured list. Stepping up to the starting line-up was Hazel Atkins who has made a triumphant return to the basketball court after a year away, bringing her "mad hops" to the team to rip down rebounds and power through to put-backs.

The game started well for the Cavs as they mixed up their defence and worked the ball around well to connect on good looks at the hoop. Tiana Wong started the Cavs off right, netting 3 of the Cav's first four hoops. Throughout the game, the Cavs demonstrated a great deal of poise and patience, moving the ball well, and getting West Van's zone to loosen up to get the ball inside. Starting the 2nd quarter off with a 12-2 advantage, the Cavs looked to expand their lead with a few tweaks to their defence and switches to the line-ups. Things worked well for the Cavs as they took a 26-9 score into half.

In the second half, the Cavs experimented with a new defence - a credit to the girls' basketball IQ to adjust to something new so quickly. It was a great combo of intense defence and patient offence throughout the third quarter that enabled the Cavs to push the score to 34-14.

In the final frame of the game, all Lady Cavs had ample opportunities to rack up some stats, and it was fantastic to see all the players getting good looks at the hoop and taking advantage of their court time. Star of the game has to go to Suha Cho who hit her first three-pointer of her career, and then followed it up minutes later with ANOTHER three! Suha finished the game with her season high of 8 points, all coming in the fourth quarter. At the final buzzer, the Cavs left the court victorious with a 52-23 victory.

Tiana Wong had another stellar performance, almost reaching her second triple-double of the season, finishing with 8 points, 9 rebounds, 8 assists, and 9 steals. Kayleigh Garland was also a beast, coming right from her Junior team game to play with the Seniors - she finished with 14 points and 10 rebounds. (C. Campbell 6 pts. 4 rb. 2 stl., B. Campbell 2 pts. 2 stls., J. Kelly 3pts. 5 rbs. 1 stl., I. Gaglardi-Kreider 6pts. 2 rbs. 1 stl., T. Wong 8 pts. 9 rbs. 8 ast. 9 stls., A. Finnie 6pts. 2 rbs. 1 stl., S. Narwal 1pt. 6 rbs. , K. Garland 14 pts. 10 rbs., S. Cho 8pts. 2rbs. 1 stl., H. Atkins 6 rbs.)

The Cavs are in action all weekend with the Cav Classic Tournament - facing off against Clayton Heights at 11:45 on Thursday. Season play continues next Wednesday, January 25th, when Collingwood plays Bodwell in the McCord Gym at 7:30 pm.

Tiana Wong delivers another of her pin-point passes in yesterday's big win.

Double Trouble At Cav Classic - Both Junior And Senior Girls Win

For the first time in Collingwood history, the senior boys' and girls' basketball teams have combined to run a joint tournament. This meant that the teams were scheduled to play back-to-back. However, at the last minute a girls' team dropped out so the junior girls' team was pressed into action. Thus, the opening game featured the junior girls versus Crofton's senior team. If the junior team was intimidated, it did not show as they came away with an impressive overtime victory. The senior girls followed this up with a thrashing of West Van. Sadly, the boys could not make it a hat-trick of victories as they fell to Carson Graham.

The loss to Carson was very disappointing as the Cavs were poor in many ways. Their shooting percentage was incredibly low from the outside and their transition defence was almost non-existent as they constantly allowed Carson players to slip behind them for breakaway lay-ups. Despite this the Cavs were still in the game at halftime. However, the Eagles blew the game open in the 3rd quarter when the Cavs failed to record a point for the first seven minutes. Samir Damji gave the Cavs a glimmer of hope when he nailed three 3-pointers in a row, but Collingwood could not overcome the deficit. Samir Damji and Brodie Jacobs both scored 17 points to lead the Cavs.

Here is Coach McLaughlin's game report on the two girls' games:

The Girls' division of the Cav Classic started off seeing the Junior girls step up to fill a last minute drop-out. The Junior Cavs were up for the challenge of playing against senior teams and didn't back down from the competition. Crofton House Falcons came out ready to compete against the It was a close game, seeing the lead change multiple times leading up to half time. The Junior Cavs used their athleticism to put pressure on the Crofton Guards and made some steals, but some sloppy play and passes allowed Crofton to convert for enough points to have the score tied at half time.

The second half was a repeat of the first, no team lead by more than 5, and the lead switched back and forth six times. Heading down the stretch, the Junior Cavs had to make a late run to bring the score within one. After a series of free throws, the score was tied - the game headed to overtime. In overtime the Junior Cavs took charge from the tip and took the lead, but with about 2:15 left in the game, the Wolves made it interesting and brought it back within 4. However, the Jr Cavs kept their cool, and managed to seal the deal, closing out the game with a win. Muneet Gill led the way with a spectacular 32 points.

Following on the heels of the Juniors, came the marquee match of the day - the Senior Girls, with a re-match against West Van. Despite West Van getting out to a quick lead, the Lady Cavs settled into their grove and brought the lead and momentum back onto their side. The seniors worked to move the ball quickly to stretch the West Van zone, and managed to connect on some of their outside shots. However, at the start of the third, the difference maker was turning up the intensity with the implementation of their press and continuously mixing up their defenses. The Cavs found the bottom of the hoop on some inside looks and fast break layups off of the steals of Tiana Wong, Isabelle Gaglardi-Kreider, and Amanda Finnie. Going into the half, the Senior Cavs had a decent lead of 23-7. The second half began with the "TANCK" attack - and the Cavs set the pace for the first few minutes. However, they became a little complacent and allowed the Highlanders to double their score in the third frame, leading 38-16 going into the fourth.

In the fourth, all the Cavs got opportunities to leave a mark on the game - Bridget Campbell turned on the aggression, ripping in rebounds and stepping to get steals, Alexa Bossley challenged the Highlander guards to use their best ball handling skills, Savin Narwal chased down big rebounds. When the final buzzer sounded, the Cavs came away with a 42-25 win. For the third time, Tiana Wong was a few stats away from a triple double getting 9 steals, 5 assists, 11 rebounds, and 8 points. Kayleigh Garland contributed 7 points and 12 rebounds, while Isabelle Gaglardi-Kreider and Amanda Finnie netted 8 and 10 points respectively.

The second round of the tourney continues tomorrow with the Senior girls playing at 10:30 and the Junior Girls playing at 2:15.

    Izzy Gaglardi-Kreider on the attack.

Muneet Gill exploded for 32 points in the junior girls' win over Crofton.

Grade 8 Girls Continue To Roll

The Grade 8 girls' basketball team has been in fine form in the new year. The squad has posted two league victories and played well this weekend in the Capilano University Tournament. Here is a report from Coach Morris:

Since the break the Grade 8 Girls have continued to impress Coach Lee and Ms Morris. We had our first game after the break on January 10th against Handsworth. Coach Lee and Morris both wanted to win as it was their alma mater. The break was the perfect recipe for the bantam girls as they came out victorious against the Royals at 45-16.

We had our last league game at home on Tuesday the 17th against the Rockridge Ravens. Although the Ravens worked hard with their low number of players, they were no match for the Cavaliers and we shattered them with a final score of 65-28.

This weekend was another weekend of fun, learning and success. The team had a great tournament. Coach Lee and I are very proud of all of the girls this weekend.

Our first round game on Friday night was against the West Vancouver Highlanders, for the third time this year. They might have beat us in our first tournament, but we were determined to get them in this third meeting, and that we did! We beat them 43-30 with Sara Fraser receiving the MVP that game. The girls worked well as a team, passing, driving to the hoop and hustling back on defence.

On Saturday, we played two games, our first against the McRoberts Strikers. They were a big team and did well to anticipate our plays and passes so we had to change our plans. The girls played very well but lost in an intense 4th quarter with a score of 27-30.

Our second game was against the Sentinel Spartans finished them off at 43-18 for a Bronze place finish. The girls worked well on perfecting our plays, sprinting hard down the floor and making accurate passes.

Our next game is on Tuesday Jan 24th at home in an exhibition game against the Argyle Pipers (the top team in the East division). It should be an entertaining end to our season, getting us ready for playoffs later this month and ISA's in February.

TimberWolves Prove Too Much For The Cavs

The Grade 10 girls' basketball team battled hard but fell to the Robert Bateman Timberwolves in the Grade 10 Girls Cav Classic Final on Saturday. Collingwood faced a formidable opponent in Bateman as the Timberwolves won the Grade 9 BC Championship last year. In the same event, the Cavs finished 10th. Thus, it seemed like Collingwood was in for a very tough afternoon, especially since star forward Kayleigh Garland was away on senior team duty.

However, despite the apparent mis-match on paper, the Cavs quickly proved that they would not be intimidated. With Muneet Gill running the offence brilliantly from point guard, Collingwood got great looks throughout the first half. Rachel Na, Sarah Gerber, Rachel Graham and Brooke Lucke all took advantage of terrific cuts to the basket to get easy buckets. The Cavs only had seven players dressed for the game so super-subs Izzy Fry and Cindy Lu were constantly pressed into action and both performed tremendously well.

At halftime, the Cavs were down by 10 points, but could have easily been tied if they had made only a fraction more of their lay-up attempts. Coach Button would have been pleased with the effort but would have also been ruing what could have been.

In the second half, the Cavs pushed the Timberwolves hard. Sara drove hard to the basket for a couple of highlight reel hoops and the team's tenacious defence started to shut down Bateman. On two occasions, Collingwood cut the lead to 6 points. In the end, the Timberwolves strong inside game proved to be too much for the Cavs. Nevertheless, Coach Button came away with the strong belief that this team has the strength to once again push everyone in the North Shore league.

Muneet Gill was outstanding throughout the Cav Classic. Her terrific play on Saturday kept the Cavs in the game against a powerful Robert Bateman squad.

Red Hot Junior Cavs Roll Over Royals

The Grade 10 girls' basketball team has had an amazing six days. After being pressed into service as a last-minute replacement for a team in the Cav Classic, the squad put together three straight wins in the senior tournament. This was quite the feat, especially since star post-player, Kayleigh Garland, played with the senior team throughout the event. The Cavs followed this up with a huge win over local rival Handsworth tonight. Here is Coach Button's game report:

After coming off a 3 straight wins in the Senior Girls Cav Classic, the girls kept their momentum going, winning 49-35 against Handsworth.

Handsworth was a great team, and as we were only up by 5 at the half, we knew we had to make some adjustments. The energy was low in the first and second quarters, but that soon changed with Rachel Na's tenacious defence, and Kayleigh Garland's energy with her voice and leadership.

Coach Button is extremely proud of the girls as every player on the team contributed to the win tonight.

Team captain Muneet Gill, praised her teammate, "Rachel Na had an amazing game with her defensive stops and steals! She shut down the point guard and was a key part of the team's success. Not to mention, she also contributed 8 points along with 12 rebounds!"

Brooke Lucke, who had some key shots in the third, also adds " Rachel Graham had a great game today! She was playing inside as a post, which she has been doing a lot lately. She was able to get a lot of points and deke around the defence and always rebound her own or others missed shots. She finished the game with a total of 14 points!"

The girls face Rockridge on Thursday.

Sara Gerber penetrates the Handsworth defence drawing four players to her before a brilliant 'dish' to a teammate.

Kayleigh Garland backs in her opposite number. KG scored some sensational baskets tonight with her silky inside moves.

Perhaps the greatest box-out in Collingwood history. Nicole Basran positions herself so perfectly you can barely see the Handsworth player.

Cavs Beat Bruins On Seniors Night

Collingwood said good-bye to four terrific basketball grads as the senior girls defeated Bodwell 65-54 last night. As usual all four seniors were a huge part of the team's victory. Although the Cavs made it difficult on themselves by missing some very easy shots, the win was assured when senior forward Nikki Sutton-MacGregor exploded for 13 of her game high 15 points in the 4th quarter.

Fellow senior Tiana Wong was her usual outstanding self as she ran the offence, picked off numerous errant Bodwell passes and chipped in with 11 points. Charlotte Campbell and Hazel Atkins also demonstrated why veteran leadership is so important as they were both tenacious on defence and hit the boards hard at both ends. Charlotte kicked in 4 points while Hazel added 3 points.

Amanda Finnie and Kayleigh Garland also had big games. Amanda drove the lane hard all night and was four for five from the charity stripe to score 12 points. Kayleigh was solid underneath. She scored 10 points and proved that she is starting to develop her outside game.

With the win secured, the team and the fans turned their attention to celebrating the four grads. Coach McLaughlin presented Charlotte, Hazel, Nikki and Tiana with a fantastic photo album, framed photo and flowers. Coach M really knows how to do this event right and her love for her players shone brightly throughout the ceremony. Each grad was read a tribute by a younger player and they were all touching. Amanda, Jacqui, Kayleigh and Suha were all terrific.

The Cavs will now play in the West Point Grey tournament this weekend.

The Grade 10 boys' basketball team exploded in the third quarter to defeat Handsworth 52-38 in an important North Shore league game. This big win assured the Cavs a home playoff game next Wednesday. Coach Ditson was thrilled with his team's second half performance. Here is his game report:

On a night when they found themselves provincially unranked for the 3rd consecutive poll, the Collingwood Cavaliers looked every bit the part of a Top 10 team.

The Cavs scored 27 points in the 3rd quarter after being down 19-17 to the Handsworth Royals going into the break. That 3rd quarter run lead the Cavs to a 52-38 victory over the Royals on Thursday night.

Of particular note were the combined scoring performances of Aleem Karmali (15pts, 6rbs) and Lochlan Collins (11pts, 4asts, 4 stls).

''I've got to bring it,'' Karmali said. ''I've got to be ready at all times; we always need to have the mindset to be aggressive.''

Riley Arbogast added 9 points from deep, and Tariq Alibhai had 10 points, 8 rebounds, and 4 steals to help the Cavaliers extend their four-game winning streak.

''It felt like we were a step slow in the first half,'' coach Ditson said "we needed to push the pace and play our up-tempo game in the 3rd and 4th."

The Cavaliers have won four in a row and eight of ten since starting the new year with a trip to Oregon and a loss to Banks High.

''Ever since we got back from Portland we've gotten closer as a team,'' Collins said. ''We had to come out tonight and play with a lot of energy, play hard, play with heart, and just continue to battle play after play after play.''

Coming off the Injured Reserve, Collins regained his starting position last week, and looked focused and ready in one of the team's first major challenges with him back at full strength. They came out firing against the taller Handsworth defense, and opened the 1st quarter on a 10-2 run. Stagnant offense, and a few moments of poor shot selection allowed the Royals to close the gap and take a 19-17 ead into halftime.

In the 2nd half, Karmali hit a pair of 3-pointers to try to jumpstart a Cavs charge in the 3rd quarter and Alibhai made three consecutive transition layups to stretch the Cavalier lead to 10. A 3-pointer from Riley Arbogast backed onto a buzzer beating layup from Tom LeBlanc pushed the Cavalier lead to 44-30 going into the 4th quarter. The Royals pushed back, and closed the gap to 8 points on a pair of And-1 baskets midway through the 4th. The young Cavs answered with consecutive scores, played smart basketball, and held the lead for the remainder of the game with patient offense, timely offensive rebounds, and disciplined defensive possessions.

"Handsworth played their traditionally physical style of basketball,'' Arbogast said, ''but we made plays on offence, and got stops on defense. That's hard to overcome."

The return of Lochlan Collins has made the Cavs an even more impressive team.
