Tannis McKay scored a goal in each half and then added another in overtime as the senior girls' soccer team defeated Alpha 3-2 to keep their dreams of a berth in the BC Championships alive. The Cavs will now face STA on Thursday with the knowledge that a win will send them back to the provincial championships for the second straight year.
Collingwood took a 1-0 lead, but Alpha tied it up. Tannis once again put the Cavs into the lead, but the Aztecs rose to the occasion and once again tied the game. In overtime, Tannis blasted her third goal into the back of the net and Collingwood hung on for the victory.
Coach Yeates had praise for his whole team. In his words, "it was a bit of a 'niggly' game, but all the girls stepped up and fought through Alpha's physical play". He was particularly pleased with his back three of Rachel Graham, Riley Kennedy and Hailey Gayda. He also praised Jena Abdel-Barr for her strong tackling.
Thursday's game time and location have yet to be decided, but it promises to be a terrific match as the Cavs look to avenge their only league loss against the Saints.
