The Grade 9/10 girls' basketball team defeated St. Pat's from Vancouver on Saturday afternoon to win the Collingwood Junior Cav Classic tournament. Here is the game report from Coach Fraser:

After two intense, hard fought games to make it to the final, the Cavs Junior Girls Basketball team came up against a quick, dexterous, and skilled team from St. Pat's.

In altogether uncharacteristic fashion, the Cavs started with a composed, fluid execution, forced three turnovers, and scored their first three times down the court. Besides substantially shocking their own coaches, this had the other team's coach calling a time-out before the scorer's table had even got the sheet ready to record it.

But St. Pat's showed they could match our composure and played very proficiently, so that our lead fluctuated from 1 to 5 points the entire first half. As always, it took solid contributions from everyone on the team at the start of the third, because our starters got into their accustomed foul trouble. It wasn't until mid-way through the third quarter that the Cavs famous tenacious defense and freewheeling offense appeared, but when it did we started to pull ahead, culminating in Rachael Chete hitting two stiletto three-pointers that put the game out of reach for St. Pat's.

Rachael Chete was a tournament all-star, scoring 18, 10, and 20 points in the three games, while Sara Ndlovu-Fraser was tournament MVP scoring 18, 14, and 18 points, and making many assists. Stella Guernsey, Monique Kelly, May Chen, and Seli Edstrand were stalwarts in the low post all tournament; rebounding, running screens, and scoring crucial points in the paint.
