Collingwood is committed to honouring our Earth during Waste Reduction Week, October 15-21, via various initiatives and in-class lessons across both campuses.

The program's educational resources and "take action" messaging empower all Canadians to adopt more environmentally conscious choices. Waste Reduction Week in Canada further provides information and ideas to reduce waste in all facets of daily living, creating the solutions to the many environmental challenges we face including climate change, water pollution and preservation of natural resources.

Please take a moment to visit the WRW site and encourage your children to tell you about what they're learning and participating in at school.

Waste Reduction Week Initiatives

Kick off WRW this Sunday, October 14th with a Collingwood beach clean-up at Ambleside Park! This is open to all Collingwood families. Sign up here.

Morven

Bring Your Own Cup!
Morven goes single-use coffee cup free. Removal of single-use coffee cups from cafeteria: Bring Your Own Cup!

Beginning during Waste Reduction Week, the cafeteria will be removing the single-use coffee cups from the cafeteria. Below are some steps that have been taken to support this change:
  • During Waste Reduction week, anyone who brings in their own cup will get their tea or coffee free (*for your students information) (Thank you to Sherry Heard!)
  • Heads of House will have a station set up for any students who would like to label their travel mug (so that we don't end up with lots in the Lost and Found) during that week
  • A washing station will be set up in the sink/microwave area by the cafeteria for students to wash their travel mugs out
  • Information about this change has been sent home through the Communications "News & Reminders" last two editions.
  • Signs will be up in the cafeteria by Thursday (tomorrow) to remind students and staff about this upcoming change.

Wentworth

Textile Tuesday
October 16th

Did you know the average person throws away 37 kilograms of textiles each year, and 95 per cent of those clothes could be reused or recycled? Globally, textiles waste has increased dramatically due to the rise in clothing consumption and production.

Our Sewing Service Club at Wentworth (grades 4 to 7) is collecting very lightly used, 100% cotton fabric and flannel to create receiving blankets and pillow cases for donation to BC Women's Hospital and Royal Columbian Hospital. Preferably, we are looking for lively prints and colours to bring some cheer to the children while they are in the hospital.

All donations can be dropped off to the Wentworth campus. Please contact Jennifer Pritchard with any questions.
