The senior soccer team opened league play today with a convincing 4-1 win over Seycove. The rain may have been falling but nothing could dampen the spirits of the Collingwood squad as they played beautiful soccer all game long and completely dominated the Seahawks.
The Cavs pushed the ball around the slick Myrtle Field grass with precision. Some early opportunities presented themselves but the Seycove keeper was not particularly bothered by the first few shots on net. However, the first corner of the day was a game changer. Sam Howard delivered a terrific ball and Aleem Karmali hammered it into the back of the net with a stunning header. Suddenly, the Cavs were on the front foot and they never looked back.
The Cavs second goal came off a clever set play. The Seahawks were obviously worried about another high cross off the Cavs' second corner kick of the game. Instead Sam delivered a ball right along the ground that Blaise Benoit smashed in for another superb goal.
Four minutes later Tariq Alibhai rose high to deliver another header-goal and the Cavs were well in control. The rout was well and truly on when Aleem drove a ball right at the keeper who mis-handled it to gift Collingwood their fourth goal.
The Cavs dominated the second half as well, but could not add to their lead. Seycove scored off a free kick on the last play of the game. It was a terrific team performance by the Cavs. Everyone played well especially mid-fielder Harry Philpotts who controlled the game beautifully with some pin-point passing to his always active teammates.
Tucker Lake's well-timed runs into open space helped split open the Seycove defence on numerous occasions today.
