The senior girls' basketball team kicked off this week with a West Van doubleheader as they played the West Van Highlanders and the Sentinel Spartans on successive nights. The Cavs came away with two impressive victories over their local rivals. Here is Coach McLaughlin's game report on the two big wins:
Monday and Tuesday brought league game action to the Senior Girls' basketball team as they faced off against West Van and Sentinel respectively.
Against West Van, the Cavs were able to put the pressure on the Highlanders early, converting on forced turnovers and executing well in the half court set. All the Cavs were able to see significant court time as Coach McLaughlin mixed up defences with full-line changes. Izzy F, Muneet G, and Kayleigh G led the squad scoring in the double digits as the Cavs cruised to a 69-13 win.
The following night had the Cavs facing off against a very deep and well-managed Sentinel Spartans. The game turned out to be a story of two halves. The first half was a slog, though they shot the ball well, the Cavs looked very complacent and low energy defensively, thus the score at half was 30-22.
However, with a bit of a gut check over the half-time break, the Cavs came out with renewed passion and enthusiasm and stormed through the third and fourth quarters, outscoring the Spartans 15-2 and 24-4 respectively. Mixing up the defences with two line-ups, the Cavs kept the Spartans on their toes while pushing the ball and attacking aggressively on offence.
At the final buzzer, the score was 69-30. Scoreboard leaders on the night were Muneet G (20) and Kayleigh G (14), but all the Cavs got on the scoresheet, and more importantly put in a great defensive team effort.
These two games wrap up league play before the Christmas break, but the Cavs will be in action at the Richmond Colt Classic Dec 14-16, as well as playing Seycove in exhibition Dec 18 and heading to Burnaby for a tournament Dec 20-22.
Kayleigh 'KG' Garland had two big games offensively against West Van and Sentinel.
Muneet Gill dropped 20 points on Sentinel in Tuesday's big win.
