The track team continues to shine under the tutelage of Coach Kate Ayotte. Here is Coach Ayotte's report on the second prelim meet. As expected, Collingwood athletes are qualifying for the North Shore Championships in almost every event.
The track team had their second preliminary meet at Handsworth on Thursday, April 27th and we had lots more qualify for the North Shores! There were only a few events to choose from, again because of the 100's and having to run heats and semi-finals. The events on the track included the boys 100 meter, the 800 and the 4 x 100 meter relay.
In the 800 meter, bantam Kai O'Krane ran a fantastic race to qualify for the North Shores as did Alicia Ranahan in the junior girls, where she placed 6th as a grade 9. Alicia has now qualified in the 800 and the 1500 and will likely qualify for provincials in the 3000 as well.
In the senior 800 meter category, Charlotte Campbell placed an impressive 4th place overall and Austin won the silver medal in the senior boys category, sending both seniors to the North Shores. Both Charlotte and Austin have also qualified in the 1500 meter.
In the 4 x 100 meter, the bantam girls continue to soar by winning another gold in the 4 x 100 meter relay. Justine Brongers, Liz Mathisen, Amelia Bradecamp and Jett Gleason ran a terrific race and came in well under the one minute mark and blew all of the competition away.
The next meet will be Tuesday May 2nd at Handsworth where we will have a lot of hurdlers and then Thursday May 4th (throws only at West Van). Congratulations, athletes, on a terrific start to the preliminary meets!
Kai O'Krane was a star in the fall during cross-country season. He is now using his speed and endurance in the 800m.
Alicia Ranahan has already qualified for the North Shore Championships in 800m and 1500m.
