The Grade 10 girls' basketball team defeated Argyle yesterday in North Shore quarter-final action. Due to injuries and field hockey commitments, the team was down to six players. However, all six players were outstanding and the Cavs have now moved onto the semi-finals. Here is Coach Button's report:
The Junior Girls basketball team knew they had to step up for their first playoff game against Argyle. The girls took home a big win, winning 53-33, and playing incredibly well as a team. Three weeks previous, the girls had a tough loss against this same team and they were looking to redeem themselves. The girls were also feeling a bit uneasy, starting with only 6 players. The girls remained focused, and as soon as they stepped on the court, they did not let anything faze them.
The starting five came out strong in the first period. Kayleigh Garland, Muneet Gill, Rachel Na, Sara Gerber, and Brooke Lucke all were playing very well. They were looking inside, passing it around, and remaining patient on offence. The girls were only up by 5 in the first, and we knew we would have our work cut out for us. Kayleigh Garland had a strong first quarter. She was blocking shots, grabbing boards, and was unstoppable inside. Kayleigh had 11 blocks in total, finishing with 18 points in the game. Brooke Lucke also was a defensive machine, helping her teammates out every time they got beat. Brooke even stepped off the court with a bloody eye, and wanted to go back on immediately after she was cleaned up.
After half, we were up by 9. We were really struggling with stopping the ball and defending fast transition layups. Once we got a handle on the rotation, and began to talk more on defense, and that is when we really started to go on a run. After the third, we were only up by 4. However, Muneet Gill and Rachel Na got hot and went on a run. Muneet Gill scored 15 points, while Rachel Na scored 8 in the first 5 minutes to start the fourth. Sara Gerber was also unstoppable on taking it to the rim, finishing with 10 points and 6 rebounds. We played incredible defense in the fourth, allowing Argyle to only score once, and us to finish with a 20 point gap.
This game was very important, as we had to come top four in our league to be considered for the Provincial Tournament. There have been a lot of highs this season, and the girls are really looking forward to what lies ahead.
Rachel Na's 8 points in the 4th quarter ended all Argyle hopes of a comeback.
