Grade 10 Girls Win ISA Championship

The Grade 10 girls' basketball team has played inspired ball all year long. This weekend, the team brought its 'A game' to the ISA Championships. The Cavs went 3-0 against top-notch competition to win bring home the trophy. Here is a report from Coach Button:

The Junior Girls basketball team competed hard in the ISA tournament, winning all three games to take home the gold medal.

The girls first played Crofton house to kick off the tournament, and at the beginning struggled. They felt very confident after having a big win against the Crofton senior team a week previously, but it ended up being much challenging than expected. The player of the game was Rachel Na, who played unbelievable defence to shut down their top scorer. Nicole Basran stepped up and showed that she is a rebounding machine. She boxed out on every possession and came through with 13 rebounds. The girls won 54-44 and were very happy with how they played.

The second game proved to be an easier win against Yorkhouse. Our main goal was to play our game and bring energy by playing tough, disciplined defense. We were able to work the ball around and look inside to the post. Kayleigh Garland was patient but aggressive in the post, but also played unselfish to find her teammates when being double-teamed. Kayleigh scored 20 points with 11 rebounds to contribute to the 60-44 win. Muneet Gill also was a leader by finding her teammates at the right time and slowing it down when we needed to run our offence. She also showed great leadership by leading the Grade 9s on the floor when they were unsure of what to do.

The third and final game was against Southridge. The girls played so well as a team, and every girl contributed to the 57-39 win. Highlights included Caitlin Ryan and Ivy Zhu, both Grade 9s who stepped up and played hard every minute on the floor. Maneli Molaie also played well and worked hard every possession on the floor. Muneet Gill was Player of the Game with 17 points, and Kayleigh Garland was MVP of the tournament, showing leadership and resilience throughout every game.

The girls played some of the best basketball they have played in the last three years. They worked hard, supported each other, and connected on the floor. It is very exciting to be coming off the high of a gold medal from ISAs into playoffs starting this week.

The girls take on Argyle at 5:30pm this Thursday at Collingwood in their North Shore Quarterfinal.
