The Grade 10 boys defeated New West in the final of the Cav Classic on Saturday afternoon. This was a tremendous victory for the team. Coach Ditson was justifiably elated after the game. His young team has suffered through some early season injury troubles, but instead of feeling sorry for themselves, they have battled on and seen multiple players step up to help secure wins. Here is Coach Yoon's game report:
It was championship Saturday as the Junior Boys' basketball team defeated New Westminster 50-43 to claim first place in the Cav Classic tournament.
After an exciting victory on Friday against Okanagan-Mission, the Junior Cavs carried a lot of momentum into the championship game. The team came out very aggressively to start the contest by pressing early and playing solid team defense. Tariq Alibhai was tremendous on the defensive end by getting into the passing lanes while Tommy LeBlanc grabbed key rebounds to help keep the lead for the Cavs. The Cavs also got strong play from both Imraan and Aleem Karmali. The twins continued to hit key 3 pointers to help the Cavs build a 33-19 halftime lead.
Imraan Karmali finished the game with a team-high 23 points and was key during the late stages of the game with New Westminster pushing for a comeback. New Westminster was able to close the gap by 6 points, but it wasn't enough as the Cavs held on for the win. The coaches would like to congratulate Tariq, Aleem, and Imraan for winning the "Player of the Game" awards throughout the tournament.
Coach Ditson, Coach Payne, and Coach Yoon would also like to thank all the parents and student volunteers for their help in organizing this year's Cavs Classic. The Junior Boys play next in the Carney Classic tournament from Dec 9-10.
