The best volleyball teams in Richmond proved to be no match for the senior volleyball team as they won two out of three matches to march on to Day 2 of the Lower Mainland AA Zone Championships. The Cavs defeated RC Palmer and McNeill to earn a trip to Notre Dame tomorrow morning.
Collingwood opened the tournament with a 2-0 win over RC Palmer. Palmer had one big hitter and scrambled well defensively but the Cavs won the first game 25-19 and the second game 25-15 and notched their first victory without any real problems.
Collingwood's second match was a different matter. The Cavs faced the traditional AA power St. Pat's and the Celtics quickly demonstrated why they were ranked #1 in the pool. Although the Celtics were not a big team, they were skilled and lightning quick around the net. Collingwood had one decent run midway through the first game, but fell 15-25 and 13-25.
This set up a must-win game against McNeill. Collingwood was simply the better team by far in this match. The Cavs posted 25-12 and 25-14 wins.
As usual, it was a team effort for Collingwood. Hazel Atkins delivered some earth-shattering spikes. Kate Phillips was fantastic defensively and her cross-court hitting was outstanding. Julia Petterson contributed some huge blocks at the net at crucial times and was hitting the ball hard. Orchestrating the whole offence was Maddie Filewych, who mixed the attack up beautifully. Finally, Daisy Wang was a real talisman when she served. Literally, every time Daisy served, the Cavs went on a roll.
The team now faces a tough opponent tomorrow at 11:00am as they are playing the #1 team out of the A pool.
Collingwood won two of their three matches tonight to advance in the Zone Championships.
Kate Phillips rises high to win a point for Collingwood against McNeill.
