The senior soccer team kicked off their North Shore league season with an exciting 2-1 win over the Seycove Seahawks. After a tough ISA tournament last weekend led to some serious soul-searching amongst players and coaches, the Cavs were a far more determined team in yesterday's match.
Seycove dominated possession and territory in the opening 10-minutes of play. The tone of the game changed quickly after Collingwood pushed into Seycove territory and won a penalty from a handball. Rio pounded the penalty kick into the right corner and the Cavs were up 1-0. This early lead gave the players a boost of confidence and their play improved dramatically. Before the end of the half, the Cavs had produced two more terrific chances that were ruled just offside.
Early in the second half, a turnover gifted Seycove a glorious opportunity and their player made no mistake with a booming shot into the top corner that was simply unstoppable. The Seahawks immediately surged forward for the winner, but it was Collingwood that took the lead when a beautiful through-ball by Rowan put Evan in alone. Evan calmly slotted the ball into the bottom right-hand corner and that was all the Cavs needed to secure their first win of the season.
Next week promises to be equally exciting as the Cavs will travel to Windsor on Tuesday to play the always tough Dukes. Then on Thursday, Collingwood heads down the road to Mulgrave to play the Titans in the always fascinating West Van derby game.
Rowan was one of the Collingwood's best players yesterday as he constantly looked for work and set up the game-winning goal.
